What are you all wearing/buying to stay warm outdoors?

this one

Shop around though as we got ours half price on amazon after trying it on in blacks.

BikeRunSki · 25/11/2020 07:36

Canada Goose also have a history of using live plucked down. If you want a down coat/jacket, there are much more ethical manufacturers. Patagonia for examples use recycled down and have been market leaders in sustainable manufacturing of outdoor gear for 30 years.

Highfalutinlootin · 25/11/2020 07:47

Boy this thread derailed fast. Hmm

I love Patagonia and have lots of their stuff, but I just don't think their parkas are as warm or well made as CG, and they are also very expensive. Additionally, a quick Google reveals nearly all down product makers have had their supply chains tainted with live pluck at some point. It's not unique to a brand.

OP did not ask "What's the most ethical coat I can buy?" She asked for the warmest.

Veterinari · 25/11/2020 08:18

Boy this thread derailed fast.

I don't think it's a derail to point out that a recommended manufacturer has unethical and cruel practices. Live plucking of down and fur farming are cruel in ways that breeding animals for meat consumption is not. You may or may not care, but lots of people do, so it's useful information to help people make an informed choice when making an expensive purchase.

Veterinari · 25/11/2020 08:21

Many of the major outdoor brands now use ethical down. I have a few Rab and Marmot jackets that are brilliant

I have a berghaus parker (currently doesn't fit due to huge baby bump). It's perfect, long, waterproof, insulated and has a hood.

puttergal · 25/11/2020 17:22

I bought a DKNY puffer style long coat in TK in a really large size so I can wear another down coat I have underneath just in case, but the DKNY has proved great just on it's own, was about £100.

BigButtons · 25/11/2020 17:28

didrikdons- wouldn't never buy anything else now. I have had mine for about 5 years and wear it for a good 6 months of the year because I am always freezing. It has worn and washed extremely well, is completely wind and rain proof and is very warm. I am only just thinking about investing in another one.

AnythingPecan · 25/11/2020 17:44

North Face Arctic Parka. Really stylish and super warm!

ChessieFL · 25/11/2020 18:01

Seasalt Janelle. Love mine. Long, warm, cosy and dry.

quince2figs · 25/11/2020 18:28

Also Seasalt Janelle. Almost too warm on days when it’s unexpectedly sunny whilst dog walking! Reasonably stylish. Mine is in 4th year of walking, rugby spectating and commuting - still brilliant.
I was caught in a few truly biblical downpour last year on a 25 min walk from station to workplace. Colleagues were literally soaked to their underwear! Not a drop got past my coat, even around pockets and seams. £150 bargain.

emummy · 25/11/2020 18:31

I have a mountain warehouse one, waterproof and warm, comes to mid-thigh on me - I’m 6ft1. I am in Aberdeenshire and it keeps me very snug and dry

Autumnraincoat · 25/11/2020 19:35

Putting in a good word for the Seasalt plant hunter - I find it warm enough on cold days with a thick jumper underneath, hat, gloves etc but it’s also lightweight enough that you don’t overheat on milder winter days - which we seem to have a lot of! It’s really lightweight and enjoyable to wear, nice colours too without the bright bits that the Janelle has (bright blue around the zip on the black one IIRC) which I personally am not a fan of.

loadypoady · 25/11/2020 19:40

Thank you for this thread I took up walking in lockdown and want to continue and now need a warm coat for winter.
I used to go to the gym but since COVID I haven’t returned.
I have looked at many of the coats recommended and I am favouring a Didrikson.
Are they true to size can those who have them advise? Blacks have a good BF discount so I am veering towards ordering from there.

AnotherFuckingUsername · 25/11/2020 19:45

If say Didriksons were true to size... if you assume you'll be wearing a warm layer under. They are Swedish and I'd say built for that physic (and weather) so slightly longer in length.

Squarebobssquarefringe
I have that Ozark parka in green
I absolutely love it 💖
We have a puppy and it has made Dav walking far easier than I had thought it would be as I hate the cold, especially if it is raining.
In fact, I have just this minute come in and as I was hanging it up I thought, I love this coat! 💕🐕‍🦺💕

HamishDent · 25/11/2020 19:49

Another vote for Didriksons. I have one of their parkas and it’s very warm and well made.

I have it in black and might buy the grey one. Such a bargain.
HmmSureJan · 25/11/2020 20:18

This one. I bought it in blue four years ago and it is my dog walking coat now. It still comes up perfectly when washed and is so warm and comfortable, fleece in the hood on the top of the head so it rests like a hat, strategic well placed pockets and longer length down over the hips. It's my perfect coat, so much so that I bought the pink one too for wearing when I am not walking the dog and want to be a bit smarter and not covered in mud and other dog related substances!

Wisteria1979 · 25/11/2020 20:40

Didrikson quite often comes up on brandalley so you can get it cheaper. Otherwise I love my Uniqlo long puffercoat. Best Buy of the year so far.

LightOfAThousandStars · 25/11/2020 21:54

How does the sizing come up on the Ozark Parka?

BigButtons · 25/11/2020 22:53

I am normally an 8 on top but my Didrikson is. 36/10. I prefer it roomy so that I can for jumpers underneath. But it’s certainly not massive on me.

ringaroundmyrosy · 25/11/2020 23:00

Is it only me that gets hot walking??It would have to be -1 or zero for me to need a really warm coat. I wear a thin padded one with no jumper and a wooly hat made from actual wool. I get boiling when walking.

When it's really cold I wear a duvet type padded coat or puffa coat, I've got a new one from Uniqlo and so far it's untested. Seems very light to try on and I'm sure it will be fine.

Literallynoidea · 26/11/2020 05:52

Thank you for all suggestions. I shall follow them all up as have slightly out off resolving this until (hopefully) I can get to the shops post lockdown.

I don't get hot walking the dog as he is a puppy and walks very slowly! Hence the need for something warm.

I go running and heat up very quickly on my runs, but a little potter to the park with a tiny puppy that wants to sniff everything is a very chilly activity!

Mominatrix · 26/11/2020 06:13

I have found that no one coat is absolutely perfect for an all winter dog walking coat, instead, I layer coats.

I used to wear a Canada Goose, which is warm (I get very cold easily), but I got sick of getting it dry-cleaned every other week due to dogs jumping on me and it was also not warm enough for standing around watching the dog play in freezing weather and yet too hot for brisk walks.

After much trial and error, I knew I needed a machine washable, highly water resistant coat which was also breathable for brisk walks. The best coats for this are from the sports clothing company (Nike, Adidas, Lululemon and the like). For cold days, I layer with a lightweight puffer underneath (usually just pick one up from Uniqlo), and if really, really, cold I wear my running gillet under that.
