What are you all wearing/buying to stay warm outdoors?

Didrikson

I bought mine in Black's a few years ago. I agree that you want to try it on - make sure the pockets are right fit keeping your hands warm, that sort of thing.

Delatron · 23/11/2020 21:32

I have a Rains coat. It’s a silver puffer but is both warm and completely waterproof. It’s amazing I call it the cost of dreams.

Softpebbles · 23/11/2020 21:33

North face Artic Parka

Warm, waterproof and shaped nicely. Lasts years,

hellswelshy · 24/11/2020 09:01

I just bought a puffer type long parka with hood from White Stuff in the sale, it's fab, feels like I'm wearing my duvet!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 24/11/2020 09:08

Love my Jack Wolfskin, I look like a walking duvet in it though. I got it in the spring sale, I make a point of replacing any winter dog walking stuff in March as there are so many bargains then.

I've got a red Didrikson classic parka that I only use when it's really cold otherwise I get too hot. It's amazing and thoroughly waterproof. I bought it about 8 years ago. The chest pockets are great the big patch pockets are awful, bulky and just in the wrong position.

The coat I use the most for rainy, miserable cold weather is a Merrell. It's got a great hood, it has thin padding, it is slightly shaped and although it's black and dull it looks good (not just a functional outdoorsy coat). It's been washed and reproofed plenty, it nearly reaches my knees at 5'⁹ and it's pockets are angled and in the right place for your hands. It is about 10 years old and looks new.

Seasalt Janelle.

LadyEloise · 24/11/2020 11:21

Sign up for Lands End- they are forever doing good deals.
The Squall Stadium coat is great, perfect for dog walking.
Often reduced.

Also have a Canada goose and it’s amazing. I bought it on eBay 18 months ago for £250 so not crazy expensive (& also am not buying new fur)

Still real fur though. Disgusting.
Highfalutinlootin · 24/11/2020 18:11

@NottinghamFlorest That's not a defensible stance. The fur has already been made. Should we throw away every existing fur coat? That would be bad for the environment and generate more demand for fur. It is harmful virtue signalling to oppose using them secondhand.

Highfalutinlootin · 24/11/2020 18:13

And for what it's worth, unless you are a total lifestyle vegan (animal products are in many household goods like glue and medicine) it is also ridiculous to oppose wearing fur. Why is it ok to kill animals for cheeseburgers and gelatin but not for coats?

AGeeseGoose · 24/11/2020 18:15

Another shout out for a Regatta one. I have the Safiyya:

I bought mine from an eBay seller for about £40, it’s really warm.

NannyOgg66 · 24/11/2020 22:01

@trumpisaflump I’ve been looking at Didriksons coats too but according to their size guide an XL wouldn’t fit me as it only goes I to 40 inch bust (I’m a 41/2) is this their biggest size?
@AnotherFuckingUsername which Landsend coat did you get please ? I can’t find a long one that says it’s waterproof rather than just water resistant. Want something to cover knees at least and am 5ft 7.

NottinghamFlorest · 24/11/2020 22:03

It normalises it though. Fur wearing should be left in the past. Disgusting. It's not ok to wear second hand or vintage fur. Makes me sick.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 24/11/2020 22:16

Another vote for Trespass (Cassini) taped seams, insulated tog rating, waterproof and windproof (a tighter woven fabric that doesn't let the wind whistle through the tiny gaps) fabric. Not high end fashionable look but it's a bargain basic technical coat without looking like you've lost your way climbing Everest.

AnotherFuckingUsername · 24/11/2020 22:40

It's the Ladies Commuter Coat @Highfalutinlootin. It seems to be discontinued but there are some NWT on eBay. It goes to mid calf on me. It is wondrously warm, waterproof and wasn't too spendy.

follygirl · 24/11/2020 22:41

Love my North Face Arctic parka

RustyBear · 24/11/2020 22:45

When I saw this title, I thought you meant for the dog Grin

Agree with this, and I love my CG, but Land's End does a huge range of very warm and well made parkas and coats for a relatively bargain price - highly recommend.
FrustratoPotato · 24/11/2020 22:52

@Highfalutinlootin

My Canada Goose parka is the warmest and most snow/rainproof I've ever had. They last for years and are very well made.
Jesus wept! None of those under £700! They do look lovely though.
Highfalutinlootin · 25/11/2020 01:26

@FrustratoPotato As PP have said, you can often find them used for much less on eBay and local sellers. They are so well made it's fine to buy secondhand.

QueenPaws · 25/11/2020 01:49

I've got a lands end and a sea salt plant hunter, recommend both

stealthbanana · 25/11/2020 01:53

I don’t actually wear the fur as I live in the U.K. and not snowy rural Canada. It’s just trim that is detachable - easy to pop off the hood and put in a drawer (or even in the bin if you’re really worried about it). It’s very hard for me to see why that makes purchasing a second hand coat problematic.

SunnyUpNorth · 25/11/2020 07:25

We got a dog 18 months ago and my son had started playing weekend football matches so DH and I both needed decent coats for the winter. He got a brilliant Jack Wolfksin one but I was really struggling. All the ladies options were either quite shapeless or dowdy and I just didn’t love any of them. In the end I bought the same coat as him in a different colour and smaller size and it is AMAZING. I love it and we were both excited this winter to wear them again. It hasn’t really been cold enough yet so I’ve only been able to wear it a couple of times so far this winter.

It has millions of pockets, is completely wind and waterproof, the hood is huge and really sturdy so stays upright. It can be driving rain and it doesn’t get on my face, plus I can see as it doesn’t fall down over my eyes.

It isn’t as long as some of the other mentioned coats, it’s around mid thigh. But when I wear it with wellies only a small sections of my legs is exposed so it’s fine.

I feel like I’m wearing an extension of my house out and about when I wear it. It’s amazing. I’ll find a link.
