Are these jeans a lost cause on me?

Hi there,

Looking for some advice as to whether or not I should return some jeans I recently bought. I’ve worn skinnies since forever as I have always found them to be comfy and flattering. However, I was keen to try out a fresher, more modern style. I’m early thirties and had a baby this year so whilst I’m back to my old dress size, I do have a bit of a mum tum unsurprisingly! I went for ‘boyfriend midrise’ cut but I think they are not particularly flattering on me... I was really excited to look a bit more current so I’m a bit disappointed! Can anyone provide some styling tips or are they a lost cause?? Many thanks!

They’re a bit big on the waist for you I think.

This style takes some getting used to after skinny jeans but I think they look much nicer on you than the skinnies.

Graffitiqueen · 18/11/2020 15:39

You need a lower rise on the jeans.

Poppingnostopping · 18/11/2020 15:44

I think you are wearing them with an older style top and that's why it doesn't work. My teenage girls wear these type of jeans, although straighter on the leg, they aren't flattering, but they aren't meant to be as they wear them with extremely tight crop tops showing off their flat stomachs/bellies, and then a very baggy overtop like a jacket or an outsize cardi. The idea is to emphasise the toned flat stomached person inside the clothes which are deliberately big.

My teens look great in them, the jeans aren't on their own as flattering as skinnies, but they are part of their look and they look great, I on the other hand would look extremely podgy and unstylish in these jeans, so it depends how you style them and what your body is like I guess! I think you could be not a teen girl and make them work, and you could be bigger and make them work, but you have to try much harder to create a good silhouette than with skinnies and a stripy top.

You look great, jeans not so much.
You have amazing pins! I'm well jell Grin

gindinner · 18/11/2020 15:53

Can you belt them and wear with a different top?

blondie87 · 18/11/2020 15:56

I agree about the top, it was just what I had on! @Poppingnostopping you are definitely right- I wondered whether three children in this style was more a younger person/toned person of any age’s game! Three pregnancies later, they’ll be no midriff flashing here 😂

I like the slim straight jeans from Zara. They're snug and high waisted around the top but not a skinny leg.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 18/11/2020 16:33

I like the style of those jeans but not the stripe down the side. As Popping said, you need to think about the right top - I’m not up for midriff-baring either, but I’d wear them with a clingy top tucked in. I do find looser jeans much more flattering on me than skinnies in RL, but they definitely photograph worse.

alittlebitofbreadandnocheese · 19/11/2020 06:15

The jeans are great and look good on you. I think it's just that you are not used to the different shape. I am a similar size and shape to you and would definitely wear them!

Absolutely this.

They’re super fashionable and look very trendy and would be great styled with the right oversized tops etc. All the comments saying they aren’t flattering are right but fashion isn’t always flattering! Totally depends what’s important to you and what you want to look like. My dd wouldn’t be seen dead in skinny or slim jeans. It’s oversized all the way.

blondie87 · 19/11/2020 09:00

I will dig out a top and see if it works!

I like the stripe, but they are way too baggy on you.
@QueenPaws
Love those jeans, my favourite jeans are Peacocks Rita jeans as they have a thick waistband with 3 buttons, unfortunately they aren't made anymore. The Next jeans look similar but not quite as skinny.

I look awful in the boyfriend style jeans, if I give up my skinnies I'll move back to skinny kickflares.

BigBlueBow · 19/11/2020 09:11

I think you need either a straight leg or a slim mom jean. Those jeans arent bad but they are quite baggy on you. A straight or a slim mom would still highlight your legs (which are lovely) but look more fashionable than skinnies

I agree that they are never going to work with a stripy top. That top looks like it should be worn with skinnies, its sort of that classic mum look stripy top and skinny jeans.

I have a question op, absolutely irrelevant to the thread but what colour paint do you have on your walls?

Sooverthemill · 19/11/2020 09:37

Different tops definitely before you send them back ( but tbh I do t like the side stripe on these jeans). My suggestion is slim boyfriend, girlfriend, relaxed skinnies or slim straight - all available pretty much everywhere. buy multiple shapes online and return the ones you do not love . But honestly try the shape you have with different tops and you may like the shape more.

blondie87 · 19/11/2020 10:19

Haha @InTheKitchenAtParties I’m not sure as we didn’t paint it, but if I can find out I will let you know!

@Sooverthemill thank you for the suggestions; when I have a minute I’ll investigate.
@BigBlueBow you have nailed my dressing- I am the ultimate mum in a Breton and skinnies and that is why I’m trying to break free 😂
