Anyone had a soft 'body' perm?

I have layered, medium length, dead straight hair that is in good condition due to regular cuts. I love having waves or a flick that I do occasionally but it just about lasts an evening. Has anyone ever had a soft perm and liked it? Is there such a thing or will I end up with an 80s like frizz?

Blatantly place-marking as I would like to know about this too!

Depending where you are, and if they are offered in your city/ town, and if your hair isn't dyed- look at Japanese digital perms.

Whoops, forgot to mention the dye! Fingers crossed we get a few more replies @Breastfeedingworries and @Farewelltoqualms
I'll look up the Japanese perms out of interest @SD1978

I just got one (at least I think that's what I got - asked for loose waves) and I'm not sure I like it. It's too curly. It's quite new though so I'm still trying to work with it and figure out if there's a way to make it work. I've had a Japanese perm before too and the curl didn't really hold without this product I was given that made it look wet which I didn't like. Gave it loads of volume though without it being overly dry. Current perm has dried my hair out quite a bit (but I'm experimenting with loads of new products and having some success!).
