What do you wear to work from home? video calls

I have been working from home for a while now but starting a new job which will involve some face to face video calls with clients/ team.
I’m looking for some comfortable lounge wear which looks ok for these kind of calls, maybe soft knitted tops in plain colours?
I do nursery drop off/pick up too so need to look like I’m not in pjs for that.
Any suggestions? Must be comfortable and warm for the winter.

I’m on camera a lot - lecturer - and just wear normal clothes, not work clothes, more the sort of thing I would wear to go out for lunch. Jeans/cords/dungarees, with a fitted jumper, or sometimes a midi dress with a cardigan at the moment. I do hope to be back in actual work sometime though! Sometimes I change into joggers if I have an afternoon not teaching.

PersonaNonGarter · 11/11/2020 23:09

It’s only really collars that you need to get right - no hoodies (although everyone in my firm seems to wear them anyway).

T-shirts with the addition of a cardigan somehow look instantly more worky. So I recommend a cardigan. Also - quite big earrings are good for making you look like you are ‘dressed’.

Big earrings are a good idea. I just feel so uncomfortable in jeans all day, I’d rather be in leggings/ lounge wear but that I can dash out the door for pick up in.

I wear jeans if I may get the chance to leave the house, jogging bottoms if not. Both with thick woollen socks and furry slipper boots, and a hot water 3
on my knees at the moment - it gets chilly sitting at a computer all day!
On my top half I look as if I am in the office, with tops that would go with a pencil skirt or smart trousers. So patterned long sleeved top with a plain cardigan, or a plain poloneck jumper. Always with a necklace of some sort to look as if I have bothered.

movingonup20 · 11/11/2020 23:20

My trick is to never turn on the videoGrin

Bwlch · 11/11/2020 23:25

Mostly jeans and a jumper at the moment.

FatGirlShrinking · 11/11/2020 23:30

My contract was officially changed to home worker today so I'm home working forever now.

I wear joggers and a jumper, plain colours so on a video call it just looks like apa black top. I do have to remind myself to brush my hair though 🤣

Wiredforsound · 11/11/2020 23:49

I have a few pairs of loose linen type trousers and I wear those with a plain bright or white top or t shirt with contrasting fine knit plain cardigan. I’m a lecturer but have taken some tips from a friend who’s a TV reporter on regional news. No fussy patterns, nothing too bulky on top, nothing too dark. I also wear make up - tinted moisturiser and powder, bit of eyeliner and mascara, and a reddish lipgloss. ‘Actor’ type trick to better engage the audience. I should really be working on QVC!

Nitflux · 12/11/2020 04:39

I’m on client calls a lot during the day and usually wear a thin wool jumper (M&S cashmere ones are great, and Uniqlo also do some fab ones). I do my hair and face as I would for the office, just makes me feel more ‘ready’. Stick a nice pair of earrings in and you’re good to go. I’ve been wearing joggers since March as I have never had the need to stand up on a conference call :)

No low cut tops ..

StarlightLady · 12/11/2020 05:52

Dresses have always been my go to wardrobe items for home working. They are quick to slip on, not too tight and l feel professional. Plus a little make up and earrings.

I have a few crew neck merino sweaters on rotation at the moment. Usually I put a nice scarf on as well (extra warmth) or earrings as others have said. Leggings or jeans, socks & ugg boots on feet! I bought some bamboo vests for underneath said sweaters.

Also, I blow dry my hair & put on tinted moisturiser, mascara & lipstick which honestly that has more impact than clothing on VC.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 12/11/2020 09:28

Yes, per PP I always wear a necklace - I have a lot of acrylic pieces from Tatty Devine which are quite striking against something plain. I also do hair/makeup as normal.

I find that black doesn't work particularly well on top, but that might be because I always use a background on Teams so people can't see my messy kitchen. Today I'm in a hot pink alpaca knit jumper from Jigsaw, and black dungarees.

No low cut tops ..
Oh yes I can't stress this enough. I have a co worker in Australia and its going into summer over there but she wears thin spaghetti strap tops or sometimes even a boob tube but where the screen cuts her off it looks likes she's naked!. V. distracting.
WhereAreWeNow · 12/11/2020 10:35

Comfy but vaguely smart stuff. Today I'm wearing Uniqlo jeggings, a long sleeved top, and a fitted fine knit cardi. I've also been wearing comfy knitted dresses.

I was wearing jogging bottoms for a bit but I'm not really a jogging bottoms person and I just felt a bit crap about myself (no judgement about others who wear jogging bottoms - they can look great, they just don't work for me) so I'm sticking to comfy jeans, jeggings, leggings, and skirts/dresses/warm tights.

Sophoa · 12/11/2020 10:35

I'm on video calls pretty much all day. I get dressed as if I am going to work, so hair done, make up on. I have a few midi / maxi dresses which are nice and comfortable or I wear jeans and a shirt / blouse. If I am feeling more casual I have a couple of jumpsuits I wear but generally I like to put a bit of a distance between work clothes and non work clothes

JaceLancs · 12/11/2020 21:35

I’m a big fan of sweater dresses with woolly tights - very comfortable and warm - with ugg slippers at home - then only need a change of footwear to go out

Maraki · 12/11/2020 22:45

I wear leggings (pls don’t judge) with long tunic tops. The tops are V necks or round necks in my wow colours (black, pine green, cobalt blue, red, burgundy) which I rotate. Always a strong red or fuchsia lipstick and if I can be asked, a necklace or a broach. I wear a headset so there isn’t any point for earrings.

P.S. Make sure your background is neutral, a plain white wall is best (but not if you have white hair). Sit up straight and look straight at the screen (so you don’t have a double chin). Mute both house phone and mobile. Check your lighting
