Hair dilemma - Hairdressers advice needed

Hello,

I really hope someone can help me. I have a DD who is 12. She has ASD and LD and very, very thick, wavy hair. It is beautiful and many would kill for it, but she HATES it. She cannot manage it herself so we have to have it long enough to be able to tie it back everyday.

She gets upset every time she has it brushed, she gets upset every time she has it washed.

I have very short hair and I would love for her to as well (as would she) but we are either told by hair dressers that it is too thick and won't sit right, or they have just refused as her hair is so beautiful.

Honestly if she could have a pixie cut I think she would be a happier person.

Can anyone help me with what I could do? Can she have it short? It would need to be really short. She hasn't got the dexterity to keep it out of her face unless it is really short or long and tied back. Also it get knotty which makes the brushing even more distressing.

I just don;t understand the logic of it not sitting right if it were short as if she were a boy surely she would have short hair. I could really do with some help with knowing what to do.

Thanks so much - this has been something I have wanted to sort it out for her for years and I just don't know where to turn.

Oh and shampoo brushes are awesome for thick hair and sensory issues. www.amazon.co.uk/Denman-D6-Shampoo-Shower-Brush/dp/B000J1AD52?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

PinkBuffalo That’s a gorgeous cut, bet you look great.

God I HATE it when hairdressers won't do what you want. I've hacked my own hair off before now because of it.

I'd recommend trawling Pinterest for inspiration if you aren't just going to point at your own head and say "like this" Grin. I pick 4 or 5 for my kids and ask them to choose the one they like, they won't sit still long enough to look themselves!

I wanted to come back and update this as my daughter had her hair cut off (30 cm will be donated to the Little Princess Trust) this past weekend and she is now very happy with short hair.

We found an amazing inclusive barber who was not judgemental and just did what we asked.

DD is now brushing her own hair, can wash it herself and is so happy with it.

Wish we'd done it years ago. So I just wanted to thank everyone for taking the time to reply and for giving me the confidence to give my daughter what she wanted.

Oh this is a lovely update! I'm so pleased for your DD and you sound like a fabulous Mum for sorting it for her 😁

GigantosaurusRex · 15/12/2020 21:23

I love this update!

Fantastic! Lovely to donate her hair too, thick hair will be appreciated. My DD donated her hair twice and now keeps it short, she doesn't have ASD but can't bear her hair being touched so we just go with what feels comfortable for her.
