Is anyone using Minoxidil for hair loss?

I started using a generic 5% version today for the first time. I know for women it’s usually 2% but I’m only going to be using it three times a week so the 5% made more sense.

On the literature I’ve read they said it could be applied to dry or damp hair. So I applied it to my hair after washing and then styled it as usual. I only wash my hair three times a week so I’m going to do it then. I do have some bits on the temple I’ll apply it to daily as that won’t mess up my hairstyle.

I also decided to invest in 6 months supply of Nourkrin. I’m praying this combination will do something miraculous as my hair is just shedding so much and it’s starting to scare me.

Have you had any investigation into your hair loss? I was losing hair by the handful and it turned out to be a thyroid problem.

FrappuccinoFan · 03/11/2020 20:56

I have tried Nourkrin in the past (for 6 months) and I think I saw results - my hair definitely improved but I was also taking iron supplements for low ferritin, which may have led to the improvement. My hairdresser commented on how fast my hair had grown since I last saw them! I only started taking them as I was growing out a long bob.

I am currently using Minoxidil in the form of Regaine 5%. I have to use it daily though, not sure if it’s as effective if you only use it a few times a week? And I only apply it to dry hair. The product I use doesn’t leave any residue on my hair so it doesn’t impact my wash cycle or weigh my hair down.

I did read that damp skin helped with uptake, but I’m certainly open to changing my routine. I thought this might be a good starting point.

I may know why it’s happening. I think it’s a combination of dramatic dieting and weight loss plus coming off of my bioidentical hormones over lockdown. On the Facebook group lots of people on similar regimes have had hair loss. So I’m suspicious about the effect of the hormone regime I was on but also mindful that my body might be reacting to me coming off of it altogether.

I’m also extremely stressed with the pandemic so I’m sure that’s not helping at all. I can see my scalp now on my crown. It’s not hugely noticeable to others as I always had thick hair but I would guess I’ve lost 20% volume of my hair.

I should also add I know my ferratin is excellent so it’s definitely not low iron. The last time I had my thyroid checked was 2013. So I shall have a read about that.

Sorry for the extra posts!

Perfectil hair supplements are pretty much the same as Nourkrin but cheaper.

Yes it is likely to be stress related (telogen effluvium).

I haven’t used it myself but my friends husband used Kirkland minoxidil for years and it honestly made a huge difference. He went from a completely bald crown to full coverage in around 6 months. I wouldn’t have believed the difference if I hadn’t seen it myself.

I've been using nourkin for 3 months, not one jot of difference, however I have decided to carry on and bought 12 months supply from look fantastic. It can take up to 8 months plus to show any difference. Consistency is key.

justanotherneighinparadise · 03/11/2020 22:13

Yep I’ve got a generic minoxidil, not the Kirkland one but similar. It’s very affordable and I’m happy to keep using it. I feel like in six months or so I’ll be feeling better. Right now I just feel 🥴🙈

I’m a bit scared about the shedding they talk about when you start using it initially. Did you get that? I don’t need any extra bloody falling out!! 😱

justanotherneighinparadise yes i am using Regaine minoxidil.
Only been using for a few weeks
Saw a Derm, who said it is TE and would grow back on it's own, but almost 2 years now and still waiting
He gave me a steroid lotion, but i have stopped it, because besides the actual thinning i have now got 2 small bald spots near the front
Also had a scalp biopsy which didn't show anything else up,
I am not low in ferritin for certain
May i ask what the generic one is that you are using? as this is costing me a fortune, even though it's from Amazon
I started off with the 2% but decided to try the 5% although it makes any hair it sticks very sticky as it's a foam, and not sure it gets right to the roots
Strangely, my bald bits near the front, do look to have filled in a bit, also on the parting, but normal length hairs, not baby hairs
I thought i was imagining it so asked my daughter to look and she said definitely filled in
I know there are generic ones but only know about the Kirkland, but i thought that was just for men, although i have spoken to someone who uses the mens 5% as she says it's cheaper
I am taking biotin, which makes the rest of my hair grow very fast, also Vit D, and Zinc
Tried all the shampoos, lotions etc, but the Dermatologist said ONLY minoxidil will work

princessTiasmum · 03/11/2020 23:22

Also not lost any more hair ,since using regaine,up to now anyway

princessTiasmum · 03/11/2020 23:26

Sorry also meant to say,it says on my instructions,to use only on dry hair
Not thyroid either, been tested,
It did get worse when i was put on HRT, so did my daughters, so stopped that, she is having thyroid tests, but i think hers could be menopausal

yaboo · 04/11/2020 01:48

I have the same problem: thinning hair, and have been on the net, looking into it. Here's what I've learnt, so far...

Low iron, B vitamin deficiencies, dodgy thyroid levels, stress, menopause, heavy dieting and pregnancy can all cause hair loss in women. A blood test can determine whether you need medication.

Generic vitamin pills are the same as the fancy-pants stuff labelled for 'hair, skin and nails', and way cheaper.

There's loads of fancy potions and lotions on the market, but they're mostly rubbish. Castor oil, sulphate-free shampoos, head massage and caffeine shampoos are often suggested, but don't pass muster in clinical trials. Minoxidil is the only clinically proven treatment for hair loss. (Don't get it on your face unless you like having a beard).

The women's version is more expensive as women will pay more for such things: the formulations are exactly the same.

Regaine (for men) is the market leader, and is also marketed as 'Rogaine' for women. Internet tells me that 'Kirkland' make a 5% solution, same stuff, same results, but Kirkland is cheaper.

Ebay is a good place to buy Minoxidil, but be careful that the seller lists the expiry date as some sellers sell out of date stock. If seller does state a 'close' expiry date, then these are often cheaper.

It takes around three months to see results, and most ebay sellers sell 3 month supplies, again which saves you money.

Am glad other people seem to be having results with Minoxidil. I'm hoping it'll work for me, too.

justanotherneighinparadise · 04/11/2020 07:57

My brand is from Hair Fantastic. It’s their own formulated serum. Kirkland is on there too as it Rogaine. Free delivery. Arrived a few days after I ordered. I spent £24 I think for three months supply.

Thank you so much for that I will try the place you get yours.I am strugg!ing to pay the prices I do
It is definitely genuine though ?
I know there are some games around
I believe Rogaine is the American name

princessTiasmum · 04/11/2020 09:02

Sorry .games= fakes

justanotherneighinparadise · 04/11/2020 09:10

I have no reason to think it’s not. The company that patented its formula has 30 years until it can be used generically. That twenty years has long gone and now generic cheaper formulations can be produced. There’s nothing nefarious about it. It’s basically the same as Nurofen against a supermarket brand. Some people just trust a brave babe which is why they can charge higher amounts. But the active ingredient is the same.

There’s no issue with you using 5% twice a day. Women may get unwanted facial hair as a side effect but I didn’t & if I had, it’s easy to resolve. There’s no other problem.

Is your hair loss all over or in specifically places? Eg mainly the crown? If all over it’s probably TE due to the issues you described. If it’s your crown then it might be androgenic aloopecia. TE should right itself when your body settles down.
