Is anyone using Minoxidil for hair loss?

I started using a generic 5% version today for the first time. I know for women it’s usually 2% but I’m only going to be using it three times a week so the 5% made more sense.

On the literature I’ve read they said it could be applied to dry or damp hair. So I applied it to my hair after washing and then styled it as usual. I only wash my hair three times a week so I’m going to do it then. I do have some bits on the temple I’ll apply it to daily as that won’t mess up my hairstyle.

I also decided to invest in 6 months supply of Nourkrin. I’m praying this combination will do something miraculous as my hair is just shedding so much and it’s starting to scare me.

@QuiteGood

There’s no issue with you using 5% twice a day. Women may get unwanted facial hair as a side effect but I didn’t & if I had, it’s easy to resolve. There’s no other problem.

Is your hair loss all over or in specifically places? Eg mainly the crown? If all over it’s probably TE due to the issues you described. If it’s your crown then it might be androgenic aloopecia. TE should right itself when your body settles down.

I’m noticing it on the crown but I couldn’t say it is only there. I also agree with your comment about androgenic aloopecia. There is a good chance it could be that from my bioidentical HRT as testosterone was one of the creams I was rubbing. They did test to make sure my DHT stayed low but I’m still suspicious it could have played a part. My worry now though is if it was testosterone related it could have permanently shrunk my hair follicles abs it won’t recover 🤦🏻‍♀️

I was diagnosed with androgenic alopecia after a prolonged bout of shedding when I was on a low carb way of eating. I used generic men's Rogaine foam for about a year but saw no improvement. Side effects were a very puffy face, especially around the eyes.

I have not been using anything lately for my hair loss, and have learned to live with it so far. I am thin on the crown definitely but shedding is all over.

notagoat · 04/11/2020 13:41

Following with interest, my hair loss is awful at the minute.

FrappuccinoFan · 04/11/2020 16:56

I’m in my early 20s and had a bout of telogen effluvium thanks to lockdown #1.

The thing with TE is that it is temporary, so with absolutely no effort on your behalf (aside from stress relief) your hair will grow back as there is no permanent damage to the follicle.

Therefore it’s difficult to say whether minoxidil has made a difference for me, or whether it’s the natural trajectory of my recovery? Fresh regrowth has already come through, I have so much baby hair in all my sparse areas and my scalp is no longer visible. Obv it will take years for the new hair to match the length of the rest of my hair but I’m happy so far.

FrappuccinoFan · 04/11/2020 16:57

Likewise it’s difficult to say whether minoxidil caused any shedding when initially used, or whether it was the natural trajectory of the hair loss.

I’m low carb also. I know Keto gets accused of causing hair loss but I was lead to believe it wasn’t Keto, it was the sudden weight loss associated with it.

I just can’t understand why a diet of salad, steak, omega three oils, full fat dairy and nuts is worse for me than my previous diet of toast. It puzzles me but obviously also worries me.

Stumpedasatree · 04/11/2020 21:09

OP, I don't know, but I was so anxious over the hair loss as a result of low carbing (it started exactly 3 months after I started the diet) I stopped it immediately. It may be the change, the shock to the system, or the fact that protein may be used as energy instead of carbohydrate which the hair needs.

I do have androgenic alopecia in the family though, so maybe the low carbing triggered it all off.

Stumpedasatree · 04/11/2020 21:10

Sorry, I meant that hair needs protein to grow.

justanotherneighinparadise · 04/11/2020 21:14

Ah thanks for being a bit clearer. It spun me off into extra worry then. I feel so brilliant on low carb. I have copious energy, my chronic gingivitis has gone, I’m now a healthy BMI. I just can’t go back to feeling like crap even if that means I live with thin hair as a result.

justanotherneighinparadise Just looked on the Hair fantastic website and can only see Regaine or Kirkland
Could you give me the name of the generic one you use please? i might find it somewhere else
thank you

throwaway10000 · 04/11/2020 23:54

I have always wondered what the difference between men and women’s Regaine is. The men’s version explicitly says not to be used by women but doesn’t explain why?

justanotherneighinparadise · 05/11/2020 06:23

Women’s minoxidil is usually 2%, men’s 5%. The reason it says that it’s not to be used by women is that the company only got FDA approval for men. I’m sure it’ll be wrapped up in the potential for women to be pregnant and the product not having been deemed as safe for a developing foetus.

OP posts:
justanotherneighinparadise · 05/11/2020 06:25

That’s not to say it’s unsafe, i suspect it just hasn’t been shown to be safe.

I’ve just realised i bought it from skin fantastic not hair fantastic! I think they’re affiliated sites. Anyway I’ll link to what I got.

justanotherneighinparadise thank you, yes i did see that, but i think it said for men only,i will check again,
Just ordered more from Amazon, but never mind it will be fine if plenty of date on it
Have you had any results or any reaction from it,?
I was a bit worried as it didn't seem to give a lot of info, but will order some now Smile

justanotherneighinparadise · 06/11/2020 12:32

It does say for men only as the 5% concentration
Is only FDA approved for men. The women’s version is 2% concentration. I’m guessing it will be connected to pregnancy or similar.

No reactions. Everything fine so far. Just plodding along and hoping in six months time I’ll be looking like Repunzel 🤭

I tried it (5%) and had major heart palpitations. Very scary. My ECG went back to normal after I stopped using it, fortunately.

I'm a slave to dark Baptiste now. Great stuff, and much cheaper.
