Vampire's Wife

Sorry if there's already a thread on this, but I'm not sure I get the hype over Vampire's Wife? What makes them so special? Area they really beautifully cut or something?

I did think Sali Hughes looked nice in one of their dresses for her wedding, but she's very skinny with boobs. Ditto Isla Fisher.

The H&M Collab leaves me totally cold.

I wonder if it's because they are generally dark colours that I usually avoid, and just not my style in any way.

I loved this dress from Killing Eve

Well, yes your last sentence sums up why it does nothing for you OP
Some of us like a Goth look 😉

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/11/2020 15:54

I don't think they're very dark at all. I am a goth and I wouldn't be seen dead in that horrible pink they do, or gold jewellery.

IsadoraQuagmire · 03/11/2020 16:02

If they're "not your style in any way" that explains why you don't get it though.
I love their stuff personally.

nanbread · 03/11/2020 16:17

Yes I like that floral one @ZaraW and think it suits her. I'd wear that if I had a less pudgy figure!

The H&M stuff is mainly black or dark metallic, which I'm less keen on. Shame as it would have been nice to see more of her colourful prints.

@IsadoraQuagmire you have a point there, I suppose I'm interested why they appeal to the people they appeal to / who own them. They don't look massively easy to wear and seem to give a lot of people monoboob.

When I say they aren't my style, they aren't the sort of thing I'd usually wear, lots of things aren't but I can still see the appeal in some cases.

I don't hate them but not sure why they are Vogue dress of the year.

Her dresses are very flattering but they are universal now and I think they've had their day. The H&M collaboration was the final nail in the coffin.

nanbread · 03/11/2020 16:19

@BobbinThreadbare123 yes pink crushed velvet or satin doesn't scream goth to me either ;)

I'm not sure how I'd describe the aesthetic.

They certainly have a singular style, I'll give them that.

OP posts:
nanbread · 03/11/2020 16:21

@Lily193 have you got / tried one? Wondered if it's the flattery that makes them appealing - they look very close cut - and of course the h&m cheap versions won't be cut the same

OP posts:
Pythone · 03/11/2020 16:22

They all look so similar!

nanbread · 03/11/2020 16:27

From what I can work out, it's maybe 2/3 dress styles, just in different lengths and materials, maybe with an extra flounce here or there.

Just had another look at the h&m collection and it's even more naff than I remembered.

IsadoraQuagmire · 03/11/2020 16:36

@nanbread I like them (though not ALL the fabrics they use) because I generally wear what I refer to as "pretty frocks"
Almost always wear dresses and skirts, hate revealing clothes and never wear jeans.

So the impractical and old fashioned aspect suits me very well.
Probably suitable for my body type too; tall-ish (5'7") and slim.
Don't know anything about the H&M collaboration, though I read something about it. Not a fan of H&M generally though!

BreathyVoix · 03/11/2020 16:37

It's just because it's expensive. Similat shit at EMP 😂Frills and shoulders puff are on trend anyway .. librarian or victoriana neckline around for ages and if thats your style you can pick this stuff up at high st. The vampires wife? Oh please it doesn't give me any goth vibes. It looks like different fabrics in the same pattern over and over again.. easy peasy for a seamstress. Their dresses look like curtains or victorian on acid. But this is the thing when its expensive it's art and WOW .. think that disgusting bed of Emin. Cheaper to get your fabric off to a tailor with a victorian style dress pattern ir photo.

BreathyVoix · 03/11/2020 16:39

Anyway where would one wear such frocks with a new lockdown every 5 minutes?

nanbread · 03/11/2020 16:43

Some of the dresses in Ghost are fairly similar (to the floral ones anyway) beautifully made and about 1/10th of the price

@BreathyVoix to a fancy bar, either tonight or tomorrow? Grin

It's Goth Lite or indeed, Fashion Goth. Like Fashion Punk when people wore studded belts but baulked at the idea of anything more permanent or actually agreeing with the ethics...

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/11/2020 16:52

Well thanks @BreathyVoix, now I'm browsing EMP for clothes I don't need...! Grin

Lily193 · 03/11/2020 19:31

@nanbread yes, I have a black velvet one which is cut beautifully but it is close fitting. I've tried the newer styles in different fabrics but prefer the originals. I bought mine about 5 years ago though and the style was more unique back then.

namechangeforfriday · 03/11/2020 19:37

I’d never heard of it before the H&M collab. A lot of people I know were really into it who don’t have what I would describe as a goth or Victoriana style so I was surprised it seemed to be so well liked as I also thought it was very tacky.

I know what you mean OP that you can see the appeal of some clothes even if you wouldn’t wear them but I just thought everything in that H&M collection was ugly

thedevilinablackdress · 03/11/2020 20:07

Just remembered I saw one in real life a couple of months back. a floral one. It looked good.

queenofarles · 03/11/2020 21:15

I think its more Maximalist Romantic than Goth.

It’s everywhere now, every time I see a floral midi dress I think oh it must be Vampires wife only to find it’s another brand.
