Is this normal PP hair loss and when will it stop?!

I’m now 5.5 months postpartum and my hair loss started towards end of August.

Each time I wash my hair it comes out in clumps, my hair brush is clearer eveytime I use it and there’s always a clump there.
There are hairs everywhere. I’m now having to vacuum daily because of me and my hair everywhere!
Each time I look at my clothes they are covered in freshly shed hairs
Every time baby is put down for a short while I pick her up to find she’s got hair in her hands.
If I put my hair in a ponytail now I can feel that it is about a third of the thickness it was before it started falling out.

I thought it would fall out for a few weeks or a month and then stop. But it’s over 2 months now and I just look a straggly mess

I’ve been taking hair and nail supplements but it’s not doing anything it seems

I had hair loss post covid. I got a blood test from GP which showed low iron levels, so took an iron supplement and used a caffeine shampoo. Seems to have done the trick thankfully as it's scary losing so much hair!

Maybe gp for blood test, check iron, thyroid etc?

BlueTitsRock · 01/11/2020 15:21

I lost quite a bit between 3 and 6 months PP but yours sounds a lot. Agree with PP, get a blood test. Iron and thyroid issues both can cause hair loss. I lost a lot when I was low on iron (not PP though).

I'm currently going through the same thing and it is starting to improve 6 months on. I have even had a receding hairline but that is thankfully growing back! A few friends have assured me they went through the same and it's normal so try not to stress if you can help it Smile

MoltonSilver · 01/11/2020 20:43

Mine did the same. It does grow back eventually. Hair and nail vitamins do help. You'll soon see a little fringe of baby hairs growing back.

bookish83 · 01/11/2020 22:51

Iron & thyroid check
Take biotin and a good well woman vitamin
Mine stopped after starting on iron again and happily growing back

Its awful when it happens. It upset me a lot x

Yes - each and every time for me! I also get a receding hairline at the front and then all snapped off at the back. And even though the amount of hair I’ve lost/am losing can look really frightening I know that it’s just the stuff that doesn’t fall out when I’m pregnant- for me, at least, it’s not anything ‘extra’ that I’m loosing. What you’ve described sounds ‘normal’ in my experience - but I do have really thick hair. So there’s usually some element of finding it all over the place/on carpet where I get ready/ in brushes/ cutting out of hoover anyway. It does stop eventually but I can’t quite remember when. Congrats on your baby x

It was awful for me too, between 3 and 6 months pp, twice! It did suddenly stop though. Although I was convinced I’d get bald patches I didn’t, it got really thin round the front in particular. Then I got tufty bits all over the place as it grew back.
It’s horrid but does sort itself out eventually. Worth asking gp for blood tests to rule out other issues.

@Onedropbeat I’m going through this myself it’s so depressing my hair is the same it has gone very very thin I’ve always had very thick hair before pregnancy so I wash shocked when my hair started to fall out after having my daughter mine has been going on for 2 months too and it’s not stopping I did have my blood drawn to check my thyroid and iron levels ect everything came back normal but I do lose around 400 strands a day easy and when I shower / brush my hair it’s really really bad too I’m taken prenatals but not seen any changes yet alott of people say there’s stops around the 6 month mark I’m hoping mine does too as I’ll have non left if I don’t 🤦🏻‍♀️ Hope yours calms down soon for you

@Loiis12345 my baby is now 6.5 months and the full on shedding has slowed down and is now just a few strands of hair a day

I hope yours slows down too. It felt like it lasted for ages
