Box dye orange roots

I’ve used box dyes for years and usually pick a light ash blonde as it’s near to my previous natural colour - before I started going grey.
However, the past 2 or 3 times I have ended up with an orangey tint to the roots. Not sure why this has suddenly started to happen as I use the same brand but is there anything I can use to tone it down? I’ve tried a couple of the purple shampoos etc but can anyone recommend a professional type toner that I can buy? Apart from the roots I’m happy with the overall colour.

Purple shampoo is for yellow tones. Blue shampoos are for orange tones.
Which box dye/colour is it?

L’Oréal pure blonde ultra light ash blonde.

That colour has bleach in it. If your roots are a bit darker then the bleach may not be strong enough to take the red tones out which is why you are left with orange roots.

The bleach isn't strong enough for your roots, hence why they are turning orange. You'll need a stronger bleach for the roots to lift it.

Thank you. It’s weird that it’s been fine for ages with the same colour but now it’s not. Maybe they’ve changed the ingredients.
