Too old for a fringe?

I am 48 and have long hair. I'd love to have a fringe but am concerned it may make me look mutton dressed as lamb. So I have bought a clip on one (Remy hair) and had my hairdresser cut and style it to 'suit' my hair. It's similar to the one in the picture, maybe a little thicker.

I am really keen to wear it but am worried I may look ridiculous at my age. Thoughts?

Fringes are ageless!! Go for it!

munchkinman · 22/10/2020 19:01

I’m 51 and got a fringe. Look silly without one x

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 22/10/2020 19:13

Twiggy is 71 and has a fringe.

lentilsforlunch · 22/10/2020 19:21

Going against the grain id say you need a good jaw. I had a fringe cut back in thinking I'd look like my youthful self except it emphasised my recently acquired jowls.....

bluebluezoo · 22/10/2020 19:47

I'm 51 with a fringe and a chin length bob. Tbh a fringe isn't about age, it's whether you've got cheekbones. Makes masking up easier too.

Ok i need an explanation. How does having a fringe make “masking up” easier?

I read it as “making up” at first, which possibly may make sense, less make up on the top half of your face, but then saw it was “masking up”

Do you mean wearing a mask? How does a fringe make that easier? Or am I missing something and don’t actually know what “masking up” means?

SoupDragon · 22/10/2020 20:17

@Ddot

Your 48 not 68 do what the hell you like and a fringe is in
Does that mean you aren't allowed to do what you like at 68?
BIWitched · 22/10/2020 20:18

FFS - who on earth created the rule that you can't have a fringe past a certain age?!

Complete and utter nonsense.

tearstainedbakes · 22/10/2020 20:21

I'm the same age as you and have that sort of style, I cut the fringe myself.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 22/10/2020 20:22

I have never, ever heard of anyone being too old for a fringe.

I have one because I look better with one.

DeadCertain · 22/10/2020 20:35

You can have a fringe at any age; if it suits you and you like it, then that's what matters (or even if it doesn't suit you, but you still like it tbh!!!).

I have a really short, sharp 20s - style bob with a thick fringe and I love it; I am in my 40s. I get lots of compliments and I am certainly no beauty!! Why not go for it?

Tomasinabombadil · 22/10/2020 20:44

You’re not too old for a fringe.
I’m 66 and have shoulder length hair and a fringe, it hides/disguises my very high forehead. Mine isn’t quite as long as yours though, cut a bit above my eyebrows. Can’t wear it longer because if I did then my riding hat or any hat would push my hair into my eyes.😂

Maybe just me but my fringe had grown out and I had all that extra hair in the way when learning how to put a mask on - I don't like tying it up. Cutting the fringe back in was a proper 'oh yeah, that's better' moment when fighting with glasses and ear elastics.

@CoffeeChouxBun

I've just had one cut in and i'm in my early fifties! I looked at loads of pictures online first- because there are fringes... and there are fringes. I wanted one that was quite long - below my eyebrows, but not wide- not beyond the end of my brows. If I can say so, i think it does make me look a bit "younger".... it hides my wrinkles and covers my giant forehead. Not so keen on it when exercising. It gets sweaty and sticks to my forehead!!
This is exactly the type of fringe I always try and explain that I want to my hairdresser! Do you still have the pictures that you used for inspiration? I’d love to see them Smile
Tomasinabombadil · 22/10/2020 21:06

Addition to my earlier comments. Here's my home cut lockdown fringe, usually a bit longer & neater when cut by my hair stylist. Lol.

Tomasinabombadil · 22/10/2020 21:08

Don't know why my photo didn't post?

Tomasinabombadil · 22/10/2020 21:15

Here it is...lol..

Misread title as too old for a fridge. Grin

Auldspinster · 22/10/2020 22:22

I find a dab of roll on antiperspirant helps with a sweaty fringe. Not had that issue this year.

Scarby9 · 22/10/2020 22:25

I think it is more about face shape than age. I have a large forehead - the fringe breaks up the expanse!

Knittingnanny · 22/10/2020 22:32

I also think it depends on face shape rather than age
I’ve always had a fringe and at 64 now have shoulder length hair with a “ textured” fringe. Don’t know what it means but my hairdresser says “ I’ll texturise your fringe”
If I tie my hair up I would feel odd with a face bare of hair with no fringe
There is honestly no age limit to fringes.

Voice0fReason · 22/10/2020 22:51

I look terrible without a fringe.

There is no such thing as being too old for one.
And they are the easiest thing in the world to maintain!

PickAChew · 22/10/2020 22:55

I find that a fringe takes years off me. It has to be a heavy Claudia winkleman style one, though. I can't see me getting to my hairdresser again, this year, and the expanse of fivehead just makes me look so tired.

Ddot · 22/10/2020 23:00

Ooo sorry my comment of 48 not 68 didnt go down well. Didnt mean you cant have fringe at 68. Meant 48 bit young to think your old.

PickAChew · 22/10/2020 23:05

Just to add that I've given up on cutting my fringe myself. My hair is very thick and dense and very wavy and I can't get it to look right both curly and straighter.
