Too old for a fringe?

SweetAlmondOil · 21/10/2020 15:16

I am 48 and have long hair. I'd love to have a fringe but am concerned it may make me look mutton dressed as lamb. So I have bought a clip on one (Remy hair) and had my hairdresser cut and style it to 'suit' my hair. It's similar to the one in the picture, maybe a little thicker.

I am really keen to wear it but am worried I may look ridiculous at my age. Thoughts?

Never too old got a fringe!
I get one, grow it out then get one again! I can never make up my mind!

borntobequiet · 21/10/2020 21:35

I’m 67, I have a fringe and a longish messy bob. Apparently I look fabulous.

OhRosalind · 21/10/2020 22:02

I don’t think fringes are associated with a particular age at all - whereas lots of people seem to consider long hair to be for younger women, for example. Fringes can be very handy for covering forehead wrinkles! In terms of what suits you, personally, I don’t think it’s anything to do with age, it’s about face shape, bone structure, hair texture etc.

DrWAnkenstein · 21/10/2020 22:04

I have had a fringe previously and when it gets a bit long, I just twist it out of the way or do a little quiffy thing until I can get it trimmed so don't find it high maintenance either.

StarlightLady · 22/10/2020 08:16

There is no such thing as being too old for a fringe.

whistlebare · 22/10/2020 10:03

I had a fringe for years and grew it out, nice to have a change although sometimes I think I look more tired without it, where did you find a clip on one? I would definitely use one of these!

Janegrey333 · 22/10/2020 10:47

I think hair which is all one length and cut into a long bob is soigné snd more stylish. Fringes are rarely perfect and Claudia Winkleman’s one looks fake.

Lambside · 22/10/2020 10:59

I have a fringe and I'm 56. I also trim it myself but my hairdresser always says I can pop in to get that done free (maybe a comment on my trim) so I have no idea why it's seen as a, for younger people or b, difficult to maintain

Silentplikebath · 22/10/2020 11:09

I’m well into my fifties and have always had a fringe. My forehead is far too huge to be without one and every single hairdresser I’ve been to has agreed that it is necessary!

AriettyHomily · 22/10/2020 11:14

How on earth can you be too old for a fringe.

I grew mine out though because it was a complete PITA and I had to blow dry it into submission.

EnglishRain · 22/10/2020 11:21

Fringes definitely make you look more youthful

Nope. Makes me look like a witch 😂😂

dementedpixie · 22/10/2020 11:54

I dont look right without a fringe. Think my forehead is too big and rounded for no fringe

SweetAlmondOil · 22/10/2020 16:41

@nancybotwinbloom

I usually cut a fringe about this time of year and usually fuck it up and take all year to grow it out. Then re cut it in.

Very interested to hear about this clip in fringe! I've tried a couple before but they were hideous.

Have you got a link please or a photo of it clipped in just to see what it's like at the join?

I'm currently talking myself in and out of me cutting a fringe.

It would be cheaper than Botox and I don't like how Botox raises my eyebrows in the first couple of weeks like Ming the merciless.

Here is the one I bought - it is VERY thick. My hairdresser had to remove half of the hair at least to make i 'blend' with mine: www.cliphair.co.uk/collections/fringe-clip-in-hair-extensions

I’m 51 going on 52 and had a fringe for years. Not a heavy fringe but layered thinner one. I don’t think or class it as mutton dressed as lamb 🤷🏼‍♀️

Elfblossom · 22/10/2020 17:54

I'm 49, hair is fairly long and I've always had a fringe! I had a Bob cut about 5 years ago and then that same week, I heard a hideous radio AD set in a hair salon with the stylist saying to client 'time to get a shorter cut now you're in your 40's' REALLY patronising! Think it was an AD for 'ladies life insurance' ... anyway! I immediately thought 'feck that! & feck you'. I'll have whatever hair I like!
AND a bob was hard work to keep looking decent!

I'd say, try the clip in fringe around the house and if you like it- get it cut! Fringes at 49 don't look ridiculous but your clip in one dropping in your lunch or flying out in the wind might 😂

Age should never ever define anything you want to do in life !!

August1980 · 22/10/2020 18:03

Give it a whirl! It’s how it makes you feel that’s most important....

SunsetBeetch · 22/10/2020 18:09

Another one who doesn't think fringes hve an age limit. And yes, they can certainly make you look younger. If you suit one, go for it!

Suja1 · 22/10/2020 18:11

Am in my 60s and always had a fringe. It now covers a lined forehead, easy to maintain, even in "lockdown". Don't understand the dilemma. I suppose it depends on whether or not it suits the shape of your face.

SunsetBeetch · 22/10/2020 18:12

No whenever I've had a fringe, . my hairdressers have trimmed it for free too.
Auldspinster · 22/10/2020 18:14

I'm 45 and have had a fringe for 10 years. Trimming it myself has meant I've been able to keep my hair looking ok during lockdown.

I'm 51 with a fringe and a chin length bob. Tbh a fringe isn't about age, it's whether you've got cheekbones. Makes masking up easier too.

Mylifesadrama · 22/10/2020 18:48

Mutton dressed as lamb with a fringe at 48?! Really?! I’m presuming by this comment that you are quite plain, and feel that a fringe is going to be too bold for you?

A fringe can actually take years off of you, and let’s face it, it’s certainly a lot cheaper and less drastic than Botox! I’m 51 and have deep wrinkles across my forehead, but no where else. My fringe sits nicely over my wrinkles, and you’d never knew I had them. 😀 Be brave and go for it. If you’re not happy then grow it out.

Ddot · 22/10/2020 18:55

Your 48 not 68 do what the hell you like and a fringe is in
