If I want to wear shoes with a winter day dress...

What kind of thing might work? I'm apple shaped and look decidedly better in dresses, so I'm planning to wear casual day dresses all winter, cos otherwise it'll be joggers and I personally look like a sack of spuds in them. To complicate matters, I've come to the conclusion after years of experimenting, that I just don't like boots with dresses. (on me, anyway). Does anyone have any idea what kind of shoes would work with casual/smart casual dresses? I'm too fat to look whimsical or preppy in brogues/flats and proper heeled shoes are gonna be too formal for my life as a SAMH. I am stumped and would welcome any suggestions

I would have said Chelsea boots or knee high boots but you’ve ruled boots out...could you try pointed flats? I love them!

Another vote for Chelsea boots here, or Shabbies do some great short boots with wedge heels, and I am an apple too so I know the struggle

Catkin it would be better if you reported your post and asked for it to be moved to the relationship board. There will be lots of good advice over there. Click the 3 buttons next to the bookmark sign and go from there.

I wear knee high boots myself with dresses (simply be have them suitable for those of us whose calves are wider) but I also have chunky slip on shoes which are comfy from M&S comfort over style

Girlzroolz · 20/10/2020 22:02

Check out Trinny’s style vids on YouTube. She rocks the ‘flatform’ trainer but it looks better with a midi (or longer) length dress. Ignore the Stella Mcartney Elyse trainers (too high, too pricey) but the hogan & russell Bromley ones she has are great!

Another vote for Mary-janes but for more comfort look out for the ones with a thicker rubber wedge sole. If you’re running around after kids you need arch support and a bit of spring.

Trinny also has vids about styling dresses with long gilets and layered coats that you might find interesting. Of course she still sometimes turns the dress into an open layer over slim pants (like her original tv show). Anyway, might find some ways to make your wrap dress look more versatile.

Added advantage of knee highs are you can wear leggings rather than tights, perfect for all this socialising outdoors lark! I have thermal leggings and thermal undertop so I don't need a coat just a more stylish jacket

@NottinghamFlorest can you repost the link to the Nirvana shoes? Smile

I wear flat shoes for work and these are just perfect. Not cheap, but soooo comfy and easy to keep clean and smart.

What about some smart, stacked trainers like the ones from Russell and Bromley? They have them in different colours some with laces and some without. The silver and gold ones look smart, without being formal and they are very comfortable. I think they suit everybody and look good with skirts, dresses and trousers.

bingowingsmcgee · 21/10/2020 20:45

Will have a look now glo thanks

@bingowingsmcgee
So glad to hear you got the Uggs in time.....that price was unbelievable! I was able to only find them on used clothing sites here in the US....and it appears bingo that if they aren't quite what you like after awhile you should be able to sell them and might even make some extra money on themWink

There are way better in person than they look on the website. Super comfy, go with everything, huge range of colours.
