If I want to wear shoes with a winter day dress...

What kind of thing might work? I'm apple shaped and look decidedly better in dresses, so I'm planning to wear casual day dresses all winter, cos otherwise it'll be joggers and I personally look like a sack of spuds in them. To complicate matters, I've come to the conclusion after years of experimenting, that I just don't like boots with dresses. (on me, anyway). Does anyone have any idea what kind of shoes would work with casual/smart casual dresses? I'm too fat to look whimsical or preppy in brogues/flats and proper heeled shoes are gonna be too formal for my life as a SAMH. I am stumped and would welcome any suggestions

Trainers.

MadameBlobby · 20/10/2020 08:39

I wear leather trainers, white in summer, black in winter.

Honeywort · 20/10/2020 08:57

I agree with the trainer suggestions ...but if that’s not your style andyou are after a comfortable heeled shoe, I’d recommend closed toe ballroom or heeled tap shoes (you can buy these without taps!) from a dance shop. I bought a black pair to wear to a ceildh a few years ago (at a wedding in Scotland- I’m not Scottish but love dancing!) and they were fantastic. They had a low heel (less than 2 inches) but were super comfortable

Apologies Dame Celia, and you’re right. I should say I think anything other then boots or trainers looks a bit drab

DameCelia · 20/10/2020 09:40

Flowers @Oly4 ,
Apologies for the snippy tone, I posted in haste!
Fwiw I agree on your footwear comments,
although as someone with large feet, thin ankles and chunky calves I do have to pick boots that end at the right pointSmile

Yes and I agree. I have a similar problem. The Barbour Abigail are quite good I find

Jessie2345679 · 20/10/2020 11:43

How about mocassins?

ZaZathecat · 20/10/2020 11:44

Loafers with a small stacked heel like this?

bingowingsmcgee · 20/10/2020 14:15

Thanks so much for all these ideas, you're really helping!

Intrigued by the ballroom shoe idea honey!

starlight you're so right, I really do need to broaden my range. I don't know why I find it so problematic, I just have a weird thing about the gap between boot and dress. It really makes me uneasy. I don't even like it on models. Weird I know. The fact that I have size 8 feet means I feel like a golf club in trainers and a dress. I'm an awkward buggar I know!

I like those loafers actually zaza might try those on and see if I feel too librarian/lesbian in them. (nothing against lesbian librarians!)

errol I have a pair of those in black from Clark's and they absolutely do work, but they're a little to formal for the muddy school run.

I have some Doc Martens Mary Jane type chunky shoes that I wear with dresses. Also Chocolaticas (the plainer ones not the mismatched ones!). I also have a cheap pair of t-bar 1" heels that are for more formal occasions, but mainly i wear my zip up black Ugg boots (not the ubiquitous type but more of a calf length boot with structure)

steppemum · 20/10/2020 14:33

well, I hate ankle boots with dresses. What I wear is either a knee high boot, usually flat as I can't wear a heel.

or

some black suede shoes which just come up a bit so stop short of being a boot, very snug fit to the ankle

or

something liek this
shoes

I like other people in trainers and dresses, but don't think I could get away with it.

NottinghamFlorest · 20/10/2020 15:04

Love these. I have them in brown and black. I think I'm a similar shape to you. They work with jeans and culottes too... and good with tights or bare legs in summer. Shoe boots as you seem to have ruled out everything else, or knee length boots?

bingowingsmcgee · 20/10/2020 19:11

bessie those ugg things are perfect!

bingowingsmcgee · 20/10/2020 20:18

Agree with all the trainer votes, but what tights would go?
What colour/ patterned/ warm tights?
