What haircut shall I get?

First haircut in ten months tomorrow.

I’ve had long hair for over a decade (and before that for long periods of time). Currently have a fringe that drives me crazy because it looks lovely at the hairdressers but is nearly always too short or too long other than on the single day of a hair appointment. I’m thinking of a change because all I do is put it in a ponytail at the moment (or sometimes a French plait if I’m feeling adventurous). Have had bobs before but I have really thick hair so they can end up looking a bit triangular (admittedly that was when I was a teenager - I have more money to spend and a better hairdresser now). Had a pixie cut in my early 20s and liked it but I don’t have the time for regular enough cuts just yet.

So what should I do? As I say I have thick hair, it grows quickly so nothing is likely to be a massive disaster. Brunette with a few greys (that I pull out if I spot them) and tend to have it coloured just a chestnut or deeper brown. I’m 42. A doctor so need to look smart and professional, but wearing scrubs for the last 6 months has made me desperate for some glimmer of personality at work. I’m slim. I run and swim regularly and am lazy/low maintenance so really can’t be doing with any long drying/styling regimes. Don’t wear make-up more than once or twice a year. Have two boys so we spend a lot of our time climbing on rocks, riding bikes etc. I don’t go out much to anywhere that means I’m really dressy, but it would be nice to have hair that could be slightly more interesting occasionally.

Help me oh wise S+B board - hit me with your suggestions please

You don’t say what length your hair is but how about something like this. content.latest-hairstyles.com/wp-content/uploads/shoulder-length-messy-deep-side-part.jpg

Thanks @Wiredforsound My hair is currently about bra-strap length. I do like the look of hair like that link, but how does it stay ‘choppy’? Is it just the cut or would I need to do lots to it?

I’ve been toying with a side fringe too, but again don’t understand how it stays in the right place - and would it just get annoying?

As you can tell I am not worldly-wise when it comes to hair Grin

I had a similar conversation with my hairdresser, where I said I'm quite low maintenance so needs to look smart (when it needs to) with low effort.

And she suggested long layers, needs to be long enough that you can just tie it up.

But I've had a chin length bob before and had a lot of compliments about that so may be worth a try if you want to look different but still not wait too long for it to grow out.

How about something like a curtain fringe. Low maintenance and equally stylish both up and down.
