Are higher end shampoo and conditioners actually worth it ?

I've got fine hair which I manage to get bounce with my Dyson and colour wow spray Grin. But I've always used shampoos and conditioners available in supermarket. Am I missing a trick would buying more high end give me better hair ? Or is it all in the styling ? Could anyone recommend any brill ones ?

I am going cruelty-free which has added a whole new layer of complexity to finding the right products for me😝

Miltonkeynesmummy thats good. which brand is it?

YellowHighlighterPen · 18/10/2020 13:29

Really is infuriating when you find a supermarket one that works for you and then the fuckers change the formula so you have to go back to your £££ version...Pantene I'm looking at you.

CraftyGin · 18/10/2020 13:29

The best brands are the large volume mid-priced one, eg Clairol. They sell enough to have a team of scientific researchers behind them.

Cheap ones have poor ingredients and no research. They break even.

Premium ones don’t sell enough to be able to do any research. They are about expensive packaging and expensive imagery (no-functional). ingredients. They basically just break even.

I've tried all sorts and IMHO it's not worth spending the money. My favourite at the moment, on my very fine hair and very itchy scalp, is a Garner coconut and macadamia nut shampoo and conditioner. They are £2 each in Wilko!

ittooshallpass · 18/10/2020 13:58

That should obviously be Garnier!

So with my virgin hair that’s healthy , I literally can’t tell a difference between high end and cheap . However once I start to colour my hair/damage it , I notice a massive difference!

I’m a huge fan of Kerastase which is expensive but you get good deals if you buy online through Feelunique or lookfantastic . I have fine hair so it does last a while .

dazzlinghaze · 18/10/2020 21:08

I've tried a range of shampoos of different price points and never noticed any difference to my hair tbh. The only exception is with purple shampoo for my bleached hair. The cheap one I can get in the supermarket doesn't do much and leaves my hair like straw so I buy a more expensive one of those. I also find high end conditioning treatments to be more effective.

givememarmite · 18/10/2020 21:48

I'm a recent convert to Aveda after someone recommended it on a thread here. Since I gave birth last October my fine hair has been awful...I had post partum hair loss after my first two babies but this time has been really bad. The damage remedy shampoo and conditioner has made such a difference to my hair. Pricey but so worth it!

Dailyhandtowelwash · 18/10/2020 21:57

I buy giant bottles of Aveda online. If I wait for discount days I can get the conditioner for about £70 and it lasts me almost 18 months. I don’t use the shampoo but that would be about £45-50 for the same amount.

It’s more than basic supermarket stuff, and a big outlay in one go, but broken down monthly it’s not that bad.

Loreal Serie expert hair repair mask was a game changer for me
with coloured dry hair and swimming every day
I leave it on in the sauna for few minutes - it makes a huge difference.

Trainjourney · 18/10/2020 22:10

I used to buy expensive brands but recently experimenting with cheaper supermarket ones and i don't see much difference. Using Johnsons baby now and it is just as good as any.

EmpressoftheMundane · 18/10/2020 22:23

Unilever and Proctor and Gamble actually have the money and scale to do meaningful research.
Expensive boutique brands have chichi ingredients, but there is no reason beyond hope and poetry to believe they actually work better.

PurpleDaisies · 18/10/2020 22:28

Olaplex number three used weekly has made a massive difference my hair.

MrsPnut · 18/10/2020 22:30

I use Wella elements conditioner but can’t use the shampoo. I have a patch of sebaceous dermatitis on my scalp and I need a shampoo to keep it under control.
I’m currently using a tresemme volume builder one as I have fine greasy hair and need to wash it everyday.

PurpleDaisies · 18/10/2020 22:31

In terms of daily shampo/conditioner, I really love the Love Beauty and Planet rose range for coloured hair. It’s not ultra cheap but usually on offer so about £5 a bottle.

Jagsy · 18/10/2020 22:36

Another recommendation for Tigi Bedhead, green bottle. I have very frizzy hair which is coloured and this really helps.

BigBrows · 18/10/2020 22:42

I've just changed to bed head urban something £15 for 2 X 750ml bottles and 2 weeks in my hair is mega shiny and has more volume

BlueThistles · 18/10/2020 23:04

this thread is fantastic

EdinaMonsoon · 18/10/2020 23:09

Aveda Be Curly is the best shampoo/conditioner on my coloured/highlighted fine dry hair. My hair has a very very subtle wave (definitely not curly) that turns to frizz with other brands. I used Kerastase for years & loved it before trying Aveda. Last year I tried it again & it really made my eyes sting!

Bringonspring · 18/10/2020 23:15

Ok following this thread. Interested in hair masks also

SciFiScream · 19/10/2020 22:41

Why don't you try testers (there's a selection at boots) before making a big purchase?

TK maxx often has some posh brands at decent prices.

throwaway100000 · 20/10/2020 00:01

Most of the higher end brands will have Xmas gift sets where you’ll see a saving vs rrp - even more so when the gift sets are inevitably reduced later.

PickAChew · 20/10/2020 00:15

I find that conditioners make most difference. A lot of supermarket brand conditioners use lots of silicones to give the illusion of healthy shiny hair but the effect doesn't last.
