Are higher end shampoo and conditioners actually worth it ?

I've got fine hair which I manage to get bounce with my Dyson and colour wow spray Grin. But I've always used shampoos and conditioners available in supermarket. Am I missing a trick would buying more high end give me better hair ? Or is it all in the styling ? Could anyone recommend any brill ones ?

I think the make a massive difference.

monkeyonthetable · 17/10/2020 17:37

Hairdressers always tell me my hair is in good condition, and I use Head and Shoulders 2-in-1, so don't even condition it most of the time. In the past I've bought higher end products and noticed no difference at all, except with Aveda Blue Malva which costs way too much to use every day.

abstractzebra · 17/10/2020 17:51

Most other beauty products, I feel you get what you pay for but I've never tried a premium shampoo and conditioner and thought 'wow, what a massive difference!'
I also suffer with itchy head for so obvious reason and find that the only shampoo which seems to stop this is Alberto Balsam Blueberry which is £1 and my hair is always in good shape.
Aussie reconstructor is good on longer hair too but I never have long hair these days.

Olaplex, Paul Mitchell and Kerstase for me. I find they really make a difference. I have fine dry coloured hair and I have to make an effort to maintain it.

throwaway100000 · 17/10/2020 21:00

Depends on your hair.

My hair is fine and damaged and Kerastase absolutely transforms my hair and makes it look normal/healthy/shiny.

If your hair is naturally perfect then I think any shampoo and conditioner will do

fitbciz1 · 17/10/2020 21:02

Absolutely no difference for me - if anything my hair prefers the cheap stuff.

QueenOllie · 17/10/2020 21:04

I prefer cheaper conditioners as no silicone. My hair likes the ultimate blends oat and this (which is amazing if you have dry hair)
I use expensive styling products though!

EasterIssland · 17/10/2020 21:05

Using davines here and so far liking it.
Getting my hair coloured so I guess I’ll be suggested fo use olaplex but not sure whether I’ll get it yet as I still have half davines.

Dailyhandtowelwash · 17/10/2020 21:28

Aveda Be Curly conditioner is transformative for my hair.

Branleuse · 17/10/2020 21:34

My hairdresser uses the alberto balsam ones that are 99p.
I have used so many different shampoos, expensive and cheap, but my hair seems to really like tresemme moisture rich

Sakura7 · 17/10/2020 22:46

I think it totally depends on your hair type. Some people can use just about anything.

My hair is quite fine (but I have a lot of it) and dry. Tigi Bedhead is the best I've found, but for supermarket brands L'Oreal is really good.

I'd love to be able to use Alberto Balsam, but it makes my hair feel like straw and gives me dandruff. Kerastase is probably the most popular high end one, but it didn't suit me at all. It's trial and error.

SendHelp30 · 17/10/2020 23:03

I’ve used L’Oreal elvive fibrology for a couple of years now. I have quite long hair and it’s really sleek and shiny with these and just the right amount of volume and body.

SciFiScream · 17/10/2020 23:04

I use tea tree and mint shampoo and conditioner from Lidl. I think each bottle costs 89p.

I use it for the tea tree mainly.

Maybe I'll try a posh shampoo and conditioner based on this thread and report back.

I have very, very, very fine hair. It's dark blonde. I'm looking forward to going grey because I've heard I'll get a different texture.

Gazelda · 17/10/2020 23:05

I use redken for coloured hair, as that is the brand my hairdresser uses to colour me. It seems to work - my hair feels in good condition and my colour lasts.

I buy enormous big bottles with a pump online, they last me about 6 months (I dispense 8 pumps per use which looks a very small amount but is plenty). So I guess I spend about £10 per month on shampoo and conditioner.

PersonaNonGarter · 17/10/2020 23:17

Yes - I use Christophe Robin and it’s amazing. But my hair was rubbish and really needed it.

HiGunny · 18/10/2020 00:05

I used to think premium brands made no difference. I tried several Kerastase and Redken shampoos over the years and noticed zero difference to my hair. However I recently started using Joico Damage Defy and it has been a total game changer. My hair is so bouncy and easy to style now - for the first time in 15 years I don't need to run straighteners over it after blow drying!

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 18/10/2020 00:23

The Tigi Bedhead shampoos and conditioners have turned out best for my hair. I have almost bum length hair and Tigi stuff leave sit feeling soft and clean and i can easily go a week between washes without looking or feeling overly greasy. I have fine hair but a lot of it and the Tigi conditions it without weighing it down and leaving it limp.

HollsLolls · 18/10/2020 00:32

Lush Big shampoo makes a real noticeable difference to my hair.

Noughty Intense Moisture Treatment makes my daughter’s hair a lot thicker and so soft, but the shampoo isn’t anything special

HollsLolls · 18/10/2020 00:37

Sorry it’s called Noughty To The Rescue Hair Mask - we all love it

Emerald123 · 18/10/2020 02:11

I use Philip Kingsley moisture build shampoo and weightless conditioner. Initial outlay is expensive but on my chin length coloured bob I use one pump of each and the bottles last 6 months. It gives me a good hair day every day and my hairdresser says my hair is in fantastic condition . With every penny.

gurteee · 18/10/2020 05:13

@RedComb

Interesting, I’ve tried shampoos at all price points over the years and I have never noticed a difference in my hair. Some styling products make a difference, but that’s all.
Same here. If you read the ingredients they are all pretty similar - water being the main ingredient.
Miltonkeynesmummy · 18/10/2020 06:17

A couple of times I bought the posh shampoos from my hairdressers and they made a real difference. Then I discovered I could get massive bottles of them off amazon. About £30 a bottle and it lasts me 10 months.

henryhooversnose · 18/10/2020 08:33

I suppose it's all down to individual hair type . I've put loads of different ones in my basket based on your recommendations Smile. Just need to work out what to try .

Remember my mother having Philip Kingsley's book in the 70s (80s) and he said then it really didn't matter what shampoo you used - mind you that was before he brought out his own range😂

Think my best biggest disappointment of shampoo with Kerastase.
