Freezing at school with windows open - teacher!

Just wondered if anyone has seen any warm or knitted dresses? I am a teacher and am already freezing at work with the windows open! I need something cosy and warm to get through the winter but also reasonably smart. Be very pleased to hear any Ideas...

I'm sure I'm a lizard, I'm so bloody cold.

Thermal underwear is your friend. Thick, wool tights. Sainsburys usually do some slightly dressier long sleeved thermal tops.

I buy 2.3 tog socks. Wrist warmers (turtle doves look lovely, but I knit my own) and thick, long, cardigans. It's all about layers.

I knit too, so I make myself scarves to match things as well as knit leg warmers (for home!) and wrist warmers.

It sucks being cold!

Have just invested in four of the Gap crew neck merino jumpers in different colours, thin but surprisingly warm. Have worn them just as top so far, but have a couple of dresses I will be wearing them under too.

DesperatelySeekingSunshine · 13/10/2020 17:52

I waited until they were 40% off, so they were less than £24 each.

Danglingmod · 13/10/2020 17:53

Layers! I've bought thermal tops, thermal tights, thermal leggings. Fingerless gloves, underskirts, merino jumpers, too.

Silk thermals under absolutely everything: www.patra.com/category/Women-Pure-Silk-Thermals

Phoebewillow · 13/10/2020 18:35

Ah - thank you, some good ideas. I’m cold at school most years but I feel that this is going to be on another level....

Uniqlo heattech extra warm thermals. M&S thermal tights. Uniqlo do lovely wool dresses (lambswool are the warmest)

PracticingPerson · 13/10/2020 18:37

Yes to layers, get merino wool base layers, two layers of tights. Can you wear a gilet thing on top? I'd invest in a performance one as they are less bulky.

Phoebewillow · 13/10/2020 18:42

Ah, just looked at the Uniqlo dresses, they are perfect - thank you so much! BrillIant idea about the gilet thing - my colleague mentioned she was planning on that so I’ll see if anyone complains!!

There are lots of small things that make a difference.

Shoes- thin hard soles like court shoes = cold feet. Wear an enclosed shoe, with a thicker rubbery sole.
Wrists- those lovely wrist warmers, often made out of repurposed cashmere jumpers.
Neck- a thin chiffon scarf in the neck of a blouse adds so much warmth.

SliceOfFriedGold · 13/10/2020 18:49

I've got thermal vests from Sainsbury's and M&S - they just look like long-sleeved Tshirts.

I've got a pair of Turtle Doves and there is a slightly cheaper Etsy pair on its way.

Wearing Chelsea boots instead of ballet flats.

And a whole host of grandad cardigans from Amazon which I throw on over whatever I'm wearing when it's very very cold.

TBH, the worst part is my TA moaning about the cold and the windows being open, but insisting on bare legs Hmm

PracticingPerson · 13/10/2020 18:49

Even better are nice ankle boots, so no draft plus fine wool.socks over tights can be hidden.

ThunderSkies · 13/10/2020 18:52

Fleece lined tights are lovely.

Elskerdeg · 13/10/2020 19:00

MNS heatgen thermals are incredible.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/10/2020 19:05

Tights with socks and ankle boots

Thermal camisole for warmth without bulk

Scarves - I'm going to try and find a plain black soft as soft can be one, to go with everything!

PhantomErik · 13/10/2020 19:06

I've just bought some thermal tights from tesco & they are lovely & warm!

Thermal t-shirts under normal clothes & wrist warmers make a huge difference.

Roll / turtle neck jumper with a blazer would still look smart I think. Jersey blazers are quite warm on.

thedevilinablackdress · 13/10/2020 19:07

I think the need for warmth trumps any dress codes under these circumstances. Wear what you need to.

PicsInRed · 13/10/2020 19:09

Wool rather than cotton.

Phoebewillow · 13/10/2020 19:31

So many ideas - thank you. I’ve ordered some items from Uniqlo as a starting point.. I can’t wait to be warmer!!!!

A lot of staff in my school have bought the school fleece or hoodies in adult sizes to wear this winter.

pinkbalconyrailing · 13/10/2020 19:34

can you have a hot water bottle/electric blanket in your lap or by your feet? a throw by your desk?

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 13/10/2020 19:42

I layer Uniqlo merino jumpers over their Heattech tops.

WhatNameToChooseNow · 13/10/2020 19:47

Ponchos and bring in your own mini radiator 😉

DeliciouslyFemale · 13/10/2020 19:53

I’m thinking of getting my daughter something like this. Her college are leaving all windows open too.

I can see the next panic buying being thermals, especially if people are going to try to save on heating.

Phoebewillow · 13/10/2020 19:55

Wow! My daughters are in a different secondary and moaning too! But they are allowed to wear their PE hoodies under their blazer so I think they have it better!!!
