Freezing at school with windows open - teacher!

Just wondered if anyone has seen any warm or knitted dresses? I am a teacher and am already freezing at work with the windows open! I need something cosy and warm to get through the winter but also reasonably smart. Be very pleased to hear any Ideas...

Ankle boots would be great if most trousers at the moment were not ankle gazers or similar..
I've been looking for stretchy trousers, FULL length that will keep my ankles and ankle boots warm.. seems impossible at the moment Hmm

homemadecommunistrussia · 13/10/2020 20:48

The policy of keeping the windows open is one I support, but you should definitely be provided with a fleece or something.
I love sainsburys thermals, but also have m&s and uniqlo as well.

Phoebewillow · 13/10/2020 20:50

@RedElephants - completely agree with the trousers!!! I only have quite cropped trousers too!!

M and s heat gen range of warm tops. They do merino wool tights £9.50. Black or navy. They will save your life

honigbutter · 13/10/2020 21:13

I'd be investing in a couple of these coatigans people were writing about in another thread.
They sound really cosy as yet another layer of wool.

MJMG2015 · 13/10/2020 21:22

Merino thermals -top & bottom!

Surely not all trousers are ankle grazers?

(Being just under 5ft, it's not a problem I have!!🤣)

Warm, but thin jumpers & cardi & Boots with socks / if your ankles & wrists are warm
It helps a LOT

I'm sending a hat is out... Shame really!

Nice scarf, wrist warmers...

I've just bought some new black ugg boots for this winter working in a school. Thinking thermal tights/leggings and layers on top - t shirt, jumper/cardigan and oversized scarfs. Im just a TA though so can bend the rules slightly and be a bit more casual then the teacher. I wish our school had fleeces like primaries do.

Danglingmod · 13/10/2020 21:43

That's much more casual than a teacher - your outfit doesn't include a "bottoms" item! Grin

EwwSprouts · 13/10/2020 21:46

M&S heatgen thermal leggings with fleeced lining under a wool dress. TK Maxx often have Clements Ribeiro in winter. I have this bought in UK store.

I don’t want anyone else to be cold... but I’m always soooo hot, I’m actually looking forward to this and hope that it is freezing 🥶🥶🥶 and I may just be the right temperature this year

DeliciouslyFemale · 13/10/2020 22:00

I do feel sorry for any children that don’t have the money to kit out their children or those children whose parents don’t give a shit. I don’t have much at the moment, but I think I’ll buy some cheap scarfs, hats and gloves to give into the college office tomorrow. The secretary is very aware of which young adults need the extra help.

foreverandalways · 13/10/2020 22:01

Tesco have some lovely wool polo necks really smart and also knitted dresses

StanfordPines · 13/10/2020 22:08

I taught EYFS for many years and spent a long time with the doors open all day all year.
My advice is socks and base layers, thermal if you can. Get a fleece and keep it in your classroom. Tights under trousers with socks over the top. Boots! Wool wraps that you can layer up.
The other trick is to keep the doors and windows closed, and the radiators on full until the very last minute. Close them if at all possible whenever the classroom is empty.

Sadik · 13/10/2020 22:09

I work outdoors, so rather different (ie not smart!) but warm feet make a big difference - slightly too big boots so you can have sheepskin insoles and wool socks over tights are a good help to staying warm all over. I'd also second the scarf/neck band suggestion - could you get away with something like the Seasalt handybands ?

Sadik · 13/10/2020 22:11

Also a warm head makes a huge difference - I don't know if wearing a smart beret or something in class would be a massive no?

DreamingofBrie · 13/10/2020 22:16

Following with interest, I was freezing on Monday!

Tights under trousers and I find a scarf really helps. I'm thinking of getting some base layers. Problem at the moment is that my thermals show under my dresses Grin.

Hopethiswilldo · 13/10/2020 22:16

At my secondary we have just been told to keep our coats on!!

Dovesandkisses · 13/10/2020 22:20

I've always worn a smartish dress/trousers with thick tights and then I always wear a huge cardigan or fleece over the top and then a thick blanket like scarf. Used to keep me warm even on playground duty in the winter. I think the school have to accept that you will be as smart as you can but you need to be warm. There is nothing worse. Layers are key.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 13/10/2020 22:21

I teach in FE and we have reverted to 100% remote now - but even in September it was chilly with all the windows open!

I am always cold, and find that if my feet are warm it’s a huge help. I have sheepskin insoles in all my footwear at this time of year - although I wear boots/brogues/trainers so maybe no use for smarter things. I get them on Amazon and they are usually about £5 for two pairs.

Agree with pp re Uniqlo heat-tech. I also have a lovely cashmere snood thing (fine-knit, so not bulky) which I got in the JL sale a few years ago that I put on in the house if it’s really cold. It’s charcoal grey, so goes with anything.

Thesunrising · 13/10/2020 22:24

Uniqlo heat-tech - vests and leggings.
Leg warmers and good smart boots
Wristees or TurtleDoves
Scarves

WearyandBleary · 13/10/2020 22:26

Primary fur-lined tights are brilliant: they make me feel like an actual bear

WearyandBleary · 13/10/2020 22:26

*Primark

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 13/10/2020 22:28

Oh, I also should have said - I say this on every thread about being cold - knee-high socks under cropped trousers!

Cuddling57 · 13/10/2020 22:30

I think I'm tempted by these wrist warmers you are all taking about!
No matter what I do though I couldn't get warm feet. So I have rechargeable heated insoles!

Clymene · 13/10/2020 22:35

Uniqlo is brilliant but rather than a thin chiffon scarf as another poster suggested, wear a silk one. You can look tres elegante and be cosy at the same time!
