Freezing at school with windows open - teacher!

Just wondered if anyone has seen any warm or knitted dresses? I am a teacher and am already freezing at work with the windows open! I need something cosy and warm to get through the winter but also reasonably smart. Be very pleased to hear any Ideas...

Woolovers do great merino jumpers, cardigans and jumper dresses that are warm.

Primark fur lined leggings or tights are fab, as are heat holders socks.

Silk is warm too and less bulky than merino so good for a base layer, or socks. Decathlon do silk socks that would look fine showing under ankle grazer trousers as they would look like thick pop socks.

If you don't have space in your shoes for a sheepskin insole try foil under the normal insole. It makes a huge difference.

Tuck your vest into your trousers to avoid any drafty gaps

I'm the same. It's freezing. I was cold to my bones today . As we are in EY the doors are always open for outdoor provision as well!

Icanseewhyichangednyusername · 13/10/2020 22:55

I’m following as I’m always cold too! My philosophy is it’s easier to stay warm than get warm...... ie wrap up with layers when leaving home rather than arrive in the classroom already a bit cold and spending the whole day trying to warm up!
I like the idea of a coatigan and or gillet and or poncho
Lots of scarves cardigans thermal socks and tights under strousers. Can you get away with finger-less gloves in class?
I like those little re-heat-able hand warmers you click them and the gel warms up for 10 mins. I used to hold them in my pocket. Deffo keep head neck hands feet and core warm. Flask of warm tea if you’re allowed, porridge etc for breakfast soup with lunch. Keep warm from inside out!

I hope the students get to keep warm as well! Mine has thin shirts, no jumpers and a polyester blazer. Not a great winter combination.

Are they not allowed to wear a coat and scarf? We got an email to send the young people in with those.

Coat and scarf

OP that’s what you need for work then.

Lucked · 13/10/2020 23:13

Coatigans are a good option. Also, and I can’t believe I am suggesting this on style and beauty, but Landsend do fleece blazers which might work.

Tradition wool and tweed blazers/ hacking jackets can also be warm especially if you can find lined options.

Danglingmod · 13/10/2020 23:16

Students have been advised to wear vests under their shirts and jumpers between shirt and blazer. Four layers should help?

I've sent my dc in with their PE skins on under their shirts. Made them put their jumpers on too.

Are jumpers part of the uniform list at your dc school?

I've told my students to wrap up warm for class, scarves, coats etc.

Phoebewillow · 14/10/2020 18:32

Students are all wearing jumpers at my school under the blazer; then on PE days nice thick hoodies. So many good ideas thank you - I’ve passed them on to the rest of the department too as we have all been cold!

I'm wearing tights with socks and ankle boots. Then I got some nice thin but wooly/cosy jumpers from primark. I wear them with midi skirts- tucked in but then pulled out just slightly for a bit of overhang. Im 32 but follow @whatkathydidnext on insta - she's a teacher who is 50. So multi generational style and warm!

Biscuitsneeded · 14/10/2020 18:38

Flippant answer: put weight on and become menopausal. I was always a cold person but in middle age have gained a couple of stone. Am constantly surprised by colleagues complaining how cold they are currently - I keep my coat on and I haven't felt cold at all... yet. I know January will be a very different prospect. But I definitely think warm boots will be needed.

Puppymummy20 · 14/10/2020 20:41

I agree with that - I was always overweight as an adult but about three years ago lost four stone to get to a healthy weight and now can’t believe how cold I get in the winter! It’s the only real downside to the weight loss

newyorkbreakfast · 14/10/2020 21:23

Uniqlo has a few jumper dresses and some good-value woolly -but not scratchy- jumpers. I second the heattech vests that other posters have mentioned above. I'm in the same boat as you. Spend half my day in a padded down coat.

mineofuselessinformation · 14/10/2020 21:33

Amazon sell sets of thermals (long-sleeved tops and long johns) for £15.
They're thin enough to wear under your other clothes and are warm.
Woolly tights, scarves and an extra layer on top help as PP have said, along with vest tops, doubling up on Lycra tights and wearing knee-high boots. Also make sure you're having hot drinks and food.
I've got several wool / synthetic mix dresses that I wear, plus a range of cardigans.
I also have a couple of fleece jackets that look smart enough too.
If you're moving around outside as lessons change, make sure your coat / jacket is properly rain-proof. (Last Thursday I barely dried out all day!)

Danglingmod · 14/10/2020 21:38

Hot drinks and food is not the best advice for a teacher...when is that supposed to happen? Grin Seriously, I am definitely colder on the days I don't have enough time to eat or drink anything.

mineofuselessinformation · 14/10/2020 23:05

@Danglingmod I am a teacher. I take in hot soup, and make sure I have coffee during the day. 🤔

Danglingmod · 14/10/2020 23:08

That's good. I just have two days in a row with no frees and no breaks. But I can have hot drinks at some point on the other days.
