Brown to Ginger hair

Hi there,

Has anyone every dyed their hair from a medium brown to a ginger/ copper colour?

If so, what products did you use? Looking at the colour packets at the moment !

I don't really want to go down the bleaching route if possible although I have read 'bleach washes' with shampoo are not too harsh if not left on for too long?

Thanks xxx

You have to bleach to white/blonde and start from there, I think. Haven't done it since I was a teen but you can't get a good clear red on brown hair without the bleach phase, I don't think. Big commitment!

Thanks @ElizabethinherGermanGarden

I was worried about that. I was wondering more if I could colour over my hair and just almost her an auburn tint but I think it wouldn't last very long at all.

Photos of it helps (you can see the awful ombré but it looks more vivid in photos it's not so harsh in real life 😂)

Oh, I've been there. Lots of suffering with the full range of rubbish not-very-reds including a pillar-box brush with henna. Sorry!

Stargirl89 · 08/10/2020 18:43

@ElizabethinherGermanGarden I'll give it a how and post results. Thank you 🙏🏻

Good luck!

You should be able to get a nice copper/ auburn sheen on it without bleaching first. Is your hair virgin? You can go up or down two shades with a permanent colour box.

Stargirl89 · 08/10/2020 20:28

@Pancakeorcrepe the top part is until it gets lighter! Thank you

It will look really nice!

Stargirl89 · 08/10/2020 21:00

@Pancakeorcrepe I think the colour should be nice but it may not be even. Thank you !

Have you got an example of the type of copper you want OP? If it's the bright vivid coppers, the 'mango' shades you'll need to lift the hair first with bleach to get those tones.

Your hair looks like it has warm tones in the pictures so you'd have no trouble warming up the brown but I think would end up with chestnut tones and a dark reddish tint rather than true Auburn hair or true ginger.

It depends to an extent what you're using to do this, and the method, especially with existing bleach in the ends and virgin hair at the roots. The porosity of the two will be different and so they will take colour differently.

If you're just whacking a box dye on I expect it'll be fine just in that your hair is quite dark, the changes won't be particularly dramatic, especially if you use semi permanent but you'll get a nice shine and some warm tones.

Thanks for your response @dontgobaconmyheart
(Love the name)

I have attached some photos of what I would really really like in an ideal world!

I am going to put in a bunch of highlights in the virgin areas of my hair to try and lift it to take the colour better. Hopefully then it will be a better base than what I have at the moment. I’ll do that tonight so fingers crossed!

I am looking at more the Emma photo.

What do you think?

You need to bleach your hair with Jerome Russel then put on xxl live colour - one of the ginger ones. It will go a warm, dark ginger colour. Good luck OP!

nitgel · 10/10/2020 14:24

i have highlights then a reddish toner

Frappuccinofan · 10/10/2020 17:26

You have to bleach to white/blonde and start from there, I think

I don’t think so? Brown hair will naturally lift to orange before yellow/white (aka Platinum blonde). The orange would work well towards OP’s ginger hair goals so no need to lift to platinum blonde! It would be unnecessarily damaging.

I've recently done this myself after wanting to go a ginger/auburn colour for about 2 years! I first had it done at the hairdressers about 3 months ago which was absolutely awful! They bleached it first and it almost was neon orange, i went back but it was still awful so I've had to dye it myself since. I use nice n easy light auburn now. So I would recommend lightening it yourself and then using this colour if you like what mine looks like. I'll add before and after pics. My hair is in fine condition I just used some good conditioning treatments and it feels healthy again, no bleaching needed now to keep on top of it, I just re-colour it for the roots around every 5 weeks. Before and afters, after looks different in different lights but I love it.

Also I think bleaching is possibly the only way to achieve going lighter ime, using this recommended by another hairdresser got my hair back to great condition and has brilliant reviews.
