Anyone else who doesn't throw make up out after the expiry date?

I will confess I have some eyeshadows which must be pushing 5 or six years old. Foundations which are two or three years old. I do because I have a TON of make up and I don't use everything until it runs out before buying a new, different one. I know that on the packaging it says that you shouldn't keep something longer than 6, 12, 24 (?) months but I've never had any issues. No break outs, no rashes, nothing. So I'm wondering whether this 'expiry date' thing is just a way for the cosmetic companies to make more money and/or cover their backs should someone leave a bottle of foundation open, in a sunny spot, in a warm and damp room for example.

Anyone else? Or am I just vile?

I must also say that I spot clean my brushes with IPA after each use and put beauty blenders/sponges in the wash after each use too.

Err, what expiry date?

Lipstick gets thrown away when it runs out, and the same for eyeshadow (or when it crumbles and disintegrates).

Magpiefeather · 08/10/2020 11:38

Yeah I keep things waaaaay past the use by date. It takes me ages to use makeup up and I loathe waste. Also If I’m honest can’t remember when I opened things either!

My eyebrow make up is definitely over 10 years old!!!

Exception is mascara, once it starts to go gloopy or dry it gets chucked.

SchmooobyDoo · 08/10/2020 11:39

Loads of my make-up is quite ancient. Got some lovely stuff for my wedding five years ago which is still on the go. Eyeshadow etc keeps just fine. Plus things I like get discontinued. Not gonna throw them out... I don’t wear make-up very often, but I like what I have. And still enjoy buying new stuff!

Xiaoxiong · 08/10/2020 11:40

I didn't even know makeup (besides mascara) had an expiry date!

Gertrudetheadelie · 08/10/2020 11:50

I still have the lipstick that I wore to my school prom at 16. I am now 34. I don't wear it but I can't quite bear to chuck it away! I know. I judge myself too Blush

WoodenFox · 08/10/2020 11:51

Foundation, powder and mascara is used daily so gets replaced often. Everything else, especially eyeshadow, I have tons of and keep it till it runs out or gets dropped/broken! My current oldest bit of makeup is a Lancôme eyeshadow duo set that'll be 10 years old this December! 🥳 🎂 😆

BoudiccasBoudoir · 08/10/2020 12:04

I threw some makeup out the other day because I realised it's makeup I used to wear clubbing and I haven't been clubbing in 8 years

Chew2 · 08/10/2020 12:11

Me neither, mascara is an exception though, once this is dry/clumpy it will be replaced. Most makeup of mine lasts quite a while so i'll only chuck it if its not been used for a good few years. I prob have makeup pallettes that are 10+ years old 😬. I don't get break outs but I would never let anyone else use my stuff.

I have an eyeshadow set still that I got for my 13th Birthday. Im 47

FrizzyHairMalarkey · 08/10/2020 12:27

I just threw some makeup out as we were moving and I decided to have a sort out. Most of it was from 2001...

MikeUniformMike · 08/10/2020 12:45

I tend to not throw things out unless they are unusable or smelly.

Mistymonday · 08/10/2020 12:48

I’ve still got eyeshadow, pencils, lipstick and nail polish from when i was about 16-18, that is 20+ years ago! It’s still fine and no allergic reactions (I am usually sensitive to this). I agree that it is a con to sell more stuff!

Taikoo · 08/10/2020 12:52

Me. I have a lipstick from 2005.

CandleWick4 · 08/10/2020 12:56

Makeup only ever gets thrown out when it’s used. It’s wasteful otherwise. If I buy a decent sized eyeshadow palette and it’s got a 12 month expiry there is no way it would be used up and I’m not going to bin it. Imagine throwing away a £40 eyeshadow palette after 12 months because you ‘should’. Nah! Grin

Frappuccinofan · 08/10/2020 13:06

When I first had a job as a teen, I ended up buying a lot of high end makeup - it could barely fit in 4 entire 5 drawer Muji acrylic boxes, with foundations and palettes etc on the side.

Some of it is 5 years old now as I have such a surplus. I also can’t bare to throw the sentimental stuff away, but at the same time I no longer use the products so I won’t risk ruining my skin!

If you do still use the products, I think you should repurchase the foundation as liquids tend to go off - changes in texture/scent/colour etc. I wouldn’t want to put all that festering bacteria on my skin. I think powders are probably fine.

mam0918 · 08/10/2020 13:08

I had some that have been thrown

some foundations seperate and you end up with a watery liquid sat on a flaky skin coloured lump and mascaras dry out awfully, do kohl eyeliners, lipsticks, bronzers, eyeshadows etc... really need a date though, I swear I have bronzers that are 20 year old lol

justanotherneighinparadise · 08/10/2020 13:10

I am genuinely still using bronzer pearls from 1984 🤣

Wasnt there a case though were a woman went blind from old Mascara? Recently

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 08/10/2020 13:18

I threw a foundation out at the weekend as part of a clear out. I bought it in the Boots staff shop when I worked there. I left Boots 16 years ago. 🤭

AnaViaSalamanca · 08/10/2020 13:20

Makeup? Ha, I taste test milk after the expiry date.

1990s · 08/10/2020 13:21

I wore an eyeshadow I bought in the 90s this week.

I’m more carefulish about mascara as it goes basically in your eye. But it usually dries out before it could cause any harm anyway.

The rest of it, what’s it going to do to you?

fairydustandpixies · 08/10/2020 13:23

I'm 49 and still have a lipstick from when I was 15. I still wear it on special occasions, I adore it!

LaBellina · 08/10/2020 13:25

Mascara I throw out and eyeshadow is risky too. I noticed that high end brand lipsticks such as Chanel stay nice for years but Kiko Milano lipsticks go rank in less then 2 years (still buy them because they're fab whilst they last). I've also had some blushes from MAC for years and they also don't go bad. My general rule is to not risk anything when it comes to eye make up but use common sense for the rest of the stuff.
