60s hair

I'm watching a few tv shows set in the 60s at the moment and I love the hairstyles. How were they done?
Were they done by a hairdresser and guarded all week? Why don't we do it anymore?

My mum used to be a Saturday girl in a hairdressers in the mid 60s - she said lots of women went on a Saturday morning and didn't touch it again for the rest of the week, so by the time she had to wash it the following week it was really grim and chock full of hairspray, like a hair helmet.

Maireas · 07/10/2020 19:26

Every Saturday morning my mum went for a shampoo and set. It was sprayed like a helmet. She never washed it in between. She wore a hat to church and a headscarf to go out in the rest of the week. She wore a hairnet to bed and often round the house. This was when she was still only in her 30s Confused

Industrial strength hairspray! And not washing in between shampoo and sets.

The hairstyles were very stylised then, more like wearing a hat or helmet. I don't think there's many modern styles that could be set to last in the same way and the 60s hairstyles that suited being set to last would just look... 1960s in the 2020's.

It's a shame that those hairstyles aren't in fashion as I agree they look great, but on the other hand to look really good they needed a ton of great hair and/or a lot of hairpieces plus rollers, heated setters, backcombing etc... it was a big commitment.

My mum told me that a lot of girls , younger women used sugar water on their hair, and that it wasn't unusual for hairdressers to find maggots in their hair.

kwaziseyepatch · 07/10/2020 22:16

Probably not very comfortable
Maggots! Yuck

I don't understand the maggots. I thought something had to have died?! And not hair as it is not dead already?!

and not hair as is it not dead already*?!

In the mid 60's I was about 20 then, and very much into copying film star hair.My hair was shoulder length and quite thick, and I wanted to achieve the wavy longish glamorous styles. I would usually have to put my hair in rollers of different sizes, and sleep in them, which is not much fun. It was quite a common sight, to see lots of young women, who were going out dancing on a Saturday night, just going to the local shop for something, with all their hair still in rollers, to keep them in longer, for better waves, then to brush it all in style just before going out, after they had done their make up.

I used to have to use loads of hairspray, which always seemed to be very stiff and rigid, and if it got wet in the rain, it would go all gunky and matted looking.

A lot of girls liked wavy or curled hair then, But if you liked rock and roll and jiving like me, a ponytail was the way to go.

Back to the maggots, could they be living on dead skin cells of the scalp ie dandruff? The sugar attracts the flies

Yes it's sounding less comfortable and practical the more I learn

My mum did the same as @Maireas. In fact she continued to have her weekly wash and set throughout her adult life.

timetest · 08/10/2020 11:34

Weekly shampoo and set, brutal back combing and a ton of hairspray.

Janegrey333 · 08/10/2020 13:29

They looked amazingly glamorous, I always think. Don’t believe the “maggots story”.

DitzyCow · 08/10/2020 19:25

Some people have a salon blow dry and make it last a week with dry shampoo.
