Did anyone NOT get postpartum hair loss??

8 months pregnant and my hair’s the best it’s ever been. So much thicker (usually very flat and the ‘fine but lots of it’ type that doesn’t do much) feels cleaner too, needing to brush and wash it much less than before.

I’m emotionally preparing myself for half of it to fall out once this baby comes, but wonders if perhaps I need not be - anyone have great hair in pregnancy and it actually lasted? Or didn’t have loads of fall out afterwards.

Pretty please! 🤞🏻😂

Thanks all I have some hope! There’s definitely more hair than usual so definitely potential for loss. Not having to commute on trains to grimy London has probably helped it’s general condition too tbf. Long may it continue.

Omg I wish I hadn't, looked bloody ridiculous, DS lost his at the same time and ended up with an amazing mohawk. Win some, lose some

I've had two children and didn't have post partum hair loss with either.

CountFosco · 02/10/2020 22:19

I didn't but my hair didn't change much during pregnancy, I've always had lots of hair. Interesting the comments about BFing though, I BF all 3DC for ages and was still BFing when I got pregnant with DC2&3 so that might have had an impact.

ShimmeringIce · 02/10/2020 22:27

About 10 hairs a day at 4-5 months PP, it was noticeable to me but not anyone else.

Crimblecrumble1990 · 02/10/2020 22:33

I've also got fine but lots of it hair. I always seemed to lose a lot of hair anyway pre baby, it was constantly floating round the house. When DS reached about 3 months, a lot came out for about 6 weeks but it didn't look any different to me!

BackforGood · 02/10/2020 22:39

I didn't. Not even heard of it so I don't think it is a common thing.

“ I BF all 3DC for ages and was still BFing when I got pregnant with DC2&3 so that might have had an impact”

I was still breastfeeding when I got pregnant the second time - that’s what then stopped the hair loss. The trigger was the reduction in breastfeeding around the 1yo mark when I went back to work. I was still breastfeeding morning and evening and days off (and nights...). However I never lost the “handfuls” people talk about - but hair falling out did noticeably increase. I’m tandem feeding at the moment and while I didn’t have any hair falling out in pregnancy I would say it is at normal levels now at 6m post partum. It will be interesting to see what happens when I stop breastfeeding one or both children

MaxinesTaxi · 03/10/2020 04:39

It is common - I would say the majority of my post natal group online have noticed more hair falling out post partum to some degree. I guess it will depend on hair type and hormones and the usual “your mileage may vary”

kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/hairloss/

“ Normally, around 85-95% of your hair is in the growth phase at any point in time, but the hormonal changes during pregnancy stimulate an increase in the percentage of hairs in the growth phase. As a result, many women enjoy thicker hair during pregnancy, as more hairs than normal are growing and fewer than normal are resting/shedding.

With the birth of your baby (and the hormonal changes that accompany birth), a larger number of hairs than normal enter the resting phase. Since the resting phase is followed by hair shedding (and regrowth), new mothers will experience greater than normal hair loss once the resting phase ends.”

WonderMoon · 03/10/2020 07:28

Mine didn't - I actually had my long hair cut to about shoulder length a month before I became pregnant so maybe that's why it felt healthy and thick ( all the dry split ends cut off!)

Magicbabywaves · 03/10/2020 07:34

Interesting so many people didn’t have it. Pretty much everyone I know who’s had a baby has had it. I wonder if there’s a link between breast feeding and hair fall?

Pipandmum · 03/10/2020 07:34

I have thick wavy hair and didn't notice much change during pregnancy or after. It's a bit thinner now post menopause though. I have a lot of it so no one but me notices (and my hairdresser).

The OP has asked for responses from people who haven’t lost hair, so it will be skewed that way
