One coat fur autmn/winter

I'm not a coat wearer. I have practical coats for when I'm outdoors, and the weather is bad. Otherwise, I don't bother.

But, I feel like I should have a nice coat for day to day wear. Work is smart casual.

I'd like something that looks like I'm wearing it on purpose rather than because I'm out in a storm!

I don't want to spend loads as I fear I still won't wear it much.

Any suggestions on style/colour?

Maybe a nice Parka?

SozBabes · 01/10/2020 14:37

So a wool dressy coat?

thedevilinablackdress · 01/10/2020 15:01

How can you not need a coat??? Does not compute 😁
What is your budget?
What would you be wearing it with?

@thedevilinablackdress I live rurally, so my coats are practical for outdoors stuff. I drive everywhere (work, shops etc) and hate wearing a coat in the car. When I get to work I walk across the road and I'm there. Can't be bothered to put a coat on on my to take it off 30 seconds later. 😂

I'm aware though that I end up looking sloppy, as if I ever DO need a coat, it's sone sort of practical outdoor affair.

I bought a parka type last year but again, it's a bit practical looking if that makes sense.

But yes, sonething a bit dressier, yes probably wool.

oldmapie · 01/10/2020 17:18

Vintage mink if you want fur Wink
Of course if you a coat for autumn / winter, then wool is a good choice, it's warm but will get very heavy in rain!
Do you have a length in mind?
Do you want it as waterproof as well as smart?

SozBabes · 01/10/2020 17:23

Think of those occasions you wished you had a dressy coat, what style and colour of clothes do you wear? If you dont know either go with what you like, what looks good on you or what suits the majority of your 'going out' clothes. Ideally it will be all three. Then set your absolutely max budget... if you come back with more info on size, styles and colours you like im sure mn will have some recs.

ImFree2doasiwant · 01/10/2020 18:20

@oldmapie Great subject for that typo isn't it?

I think I just want to look a bit more "put together " for any smart/casual occasions. Nothing too fashionable (I'd want it to last) or out there.

I have similar to this coat but last seasons in brown. Wear it everyday even though it has no hood.
Bloody fantastic. Warm, looks fairly contemporary on without being too on trend so it doesn’t last. Great length.Looks good with trainers or smarter clothes. Love mole skin.

ImFree2doasiwant · 01/10/2020 22:24

@RevealAll I think that might be it! Not in red though. ...

I'm coming round to red actually. Found a brown one, new on eBay. Decisions! Ideally I'd have navy

I have a few coats like this from jaeger and Hobbs - mainly bought on eBay they are classic and the mid length means they go with anything

SummaLuvin · 02/10/2020 10:21

I really like wrap coats. They are fairly trendy right now so available from lots brands at different price points, many colours and lengths too, however, they are classic enough to look good for years. Be careful with the cut and ensure that it fits nicely as they can look like a dressing gown sometimes.

Ninkanink · 02/10/2020 10:29

A good wool coat doesn’t have to cost the earth.

Hobbs
Jigsaw
Reiss
Jaeger

Etc.

Navy is my favourite, but a good deep red can look fantastic too and really makes a statement. I’m still looking for my perfect coat in camel. At the moment, having culled my wardrobe quite dramatically, I have one in navy, plus a leopard print, a dark red, a black/purple/camel, and an olive green.

But for a truly versatile coat navy is your best option I think.

ImFree2doasiwant · 02/10/2020 12:56

@Horsemad I think we have a winner! Shame it's not navy but I like the cognac version. Much more sensibly priced too. I don't know if you have horses (from your username) I do, and wouldn't think twice of spending a fortune on a rug. Not for me though!

OP posts:
Horsemad · 02/10/2020 13:02

Haha, glad to be of service. I no longer have horses (actually contemplating getting another! 😆) but totally get what you mean about spending on horse stuff! 😃

I like this because it's a smart coat to chuck on over a dress on the rare occasion I might wear one!

ImFree2doasiwant · 02/10/2020 13:15

Its really nice, I'm going to see if it's in stock at my local branch. I like the white stuff one above but am poor (because of horses...)so not sure I'll stretch to it.

OP posts:
Horsemad · 02/10/2020 13:29

Yes, the WS one is nice too, shame it's only available in red.

Ninkanink · 02/10/2020 13:33

Oh that Cognac colour is lovely, and also very versatile.

BikeRunSki · 02/10/2020 13:37

The coat Horsemad linked to has no wool it, it won’t be that warm.

Horsemad · 02/10/2020 13:46

Yeah but unless OP is walking lots, it will probably be fine for what she wants.

Mine would just be for going between car and shops/pub etc. I'd only wear it for 5 minutes on these occasions.

Ninkanink · 02/10/2020 13:53

Oh didn’t check composition...

Without wool content I’d be worried that it wouldn’t look great for long at all. Better to pay slightly more for quality mix so that it keeps you warm/dry and lasts longer.

Horsemad · 27/10/2020 06:21

Hi @ImFree2doasIwant did you find a coat? I got this one
