Where can I find a reasonably priced one, ideally less than £70 for a king size? Thank you.

T K Maxx. Depends how high you want the thread count to be but they've got several that are 200 or 300TC for around £30 at the moment.

Otherwise I'd hold out for the M&S or John Lewis sales to pick up a bargain.

IKEA.

Apparently thread count is a myth as brands can essentially fake it by twisting fibres together, I read a whole article on it recently (and there was a bit about it in Queer Eye! Grin). What you are actually meant to do is touch then and judge softness.

There's a nice organic 400 thread count duvet cover at the moment on Westelm.

Zara home do nice ones, I have a couple and they are good quality!

That's interesting. And it makes sense. I've got duvet covers that are meant to be a high thread count but they really don't feel especially soft and silky.

Are you near a Boundary Mill outlet? Amazing selection, lots of top brands like Christy, Sheridan.

I don't know if it's all a myth - I've got some 1000 thread count ones from the white company and they feel like silk - and almost have a bit of a sheen - although it's obviously just cotton.

Obviously you will get some brands who will be completely honest but the problem is, you can’t easily tell who is and who isn’t, unless you feel it.
