Is it mad to spend £94 on this dress?

I desperately need a wardrobe update but have v specific requirements/preferences. Has to be petite, prefer long sleeves (all the way to the wrist), high neckline, good fit. This dress ticks all the boxes but is £94! I’ve never spent that much on a dress before and I’m not sure I can justify it to myself, although I can afford it.

However I would really love a shirt dress and this is the only one I’ve come across which I like and ticks the boxes.

Is it mad to spend £94 on this dress?

I saw some long sleeved dresses in George today, they looked really nice but no good for my (slightly tubby) shape ☺️

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 30/09/2020 20:49

What size are you? I have bought from this brand, and their clothes are breathtaking in the flesh. Superbly made in amazing fabrics. I find this dress incredibly beautiful ...

I'm sticking my fingers in my ears regarding your comments on "trendiness", as I don't really understand them. Granted, no one with sense would want to spend oodles of money on something so fleetingly fashionable it would need throwing out come November - but what objection could anyone have to looking vaguely contemporary? At any age. Hmm < Stern face ...

Omg @PersephonePromotesEquanimity how cute and lovely are you?? I can’t cope!

Summerdaysdriftingaway · 30/09/2020 21:44

She is!! I can’t believe so many people would so generously try to help me! Must spend more time on S&B and less time on AIBU.

@PersephonePromotesEquanimity That checked shirt dress from Soeur is insane! Love it. I'm renovating and moving house so no new clothes for me until New Year but I am sooo tempted Smile

SecretOfChange · 30/09/2020 22:22

I agree white shirts suit all ages! My teenage daughter was just wearing mine the other day. And I know friends who are 10 and 20 years older than me rocking them too.

Summerdaysdriftingaway · 30/09/2020 22:57

Ok well I was all ready to declare I’d buy the white shirt when I realised they don’t have my size. I’m a 10-12, more a 12 these days to be fair.

I judge the price of my clothes on ‘price per wear’ so, how often would you wear it?
If it would be a wardrobe staple/go to then it might well be worth the price tag?

ScarMatty · 30/09/2020 23:09

Absolutely worth it! My favourite dresses which still look brand new even after hundreds of days out in them are Hobbs and they're the same price

Yespresh · 01/10/2020 08:37

My friend judges clothes by how many hours she has to work to pay for it.

I’m just sorting through my clothes, you get what you pay for except White Stuff which all needs to go to the jumble after about three washes. So buy the dress lady. As already suggested you can wear it in various different ways. I have the opposite problem and just bought the M&S black polka dot midaxi dress in a tall. It fits beautifully and I love it.

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 01/10/2020 08:54

Hope you got the dress, SecretOfChange! I see it's gone back to full price now - so we can at least be sure that their sales really are limited to the dates they give.

PorkPieForStarters · 01/10/2020 09:30

Cos does lovely shirt dresses in plain or more patterned fabrics, but very simple shapes which don't date, and the quality is really good. I like the one you've bought :)

Cantreasonwithunreasonable · 01/10/2020 09:34

@Summerdaysdriftingaway I've seen this actual dress in JL and it's lovely.
I'm also petite and I'd love this. It's made from a heavier fabric than you think and will be supremely flattering.
Seven years ago I spent about the same money on a FWM dress, most expensive I've ever bought. I've worn it SO many times, it's probably about 10p a wear, now! I have jumpers I've not worn as much! I love it and don't regret it for a moment, tho was unsure at the time.
I'd give it a try on.

Bloomburger · 01/10/2020 09:45

It's hideous. Pattern makes it look like her left breast is in the right place and her right breast is down by her waist!

There are far nicer shirt dresses out there surely?

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 01/10/2020 09:56

THE OP HAS RECEIVED THE ORIGINAL DRESS, TRIED IT ON AND DECIDED AGAINST IT!

Hmm
SecretOfChange · 01/10/2020 11:12

@PersephonePromotesEquanimity - no, sorry I wasn't planning on buying it because my priority right now is renovation and house move, so I decided against buying ANY new clothes for a couple of months until that's done. I still love, love, love it and hope to buy something like that in the new year. x

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 01/10/2020 11:15

No need to apologise! Grin (I probably misread.)

I recently bought one thing that (theoretically) prevents me from buying anything substantial the rest of the year. So I can only vicariously enjoy other people's purchases.

Summerdaysdriftingaway · 01/10/2020 12:43

Thanks @PersephonePromotesEquanimity! I am going to try it on again though because I think the combination of things I was wearing when I tried yesterday made the fit poor. However generally I think my mum tum needs clothes to skim rather than cling and I don’t think this is a skimming sort of a dress.

Anyway Take II will be happening this afternoon!
