Waterproof winter boots

I'm looking for a pair of leather boots which I can use for muddy walks, wearing to the shops, etc. with the prospect of a winter lockdown there won't be much else to do will there?!

I've looked at Dubarry and they look nice but quite expensive. Are they worth it? Other brands I have looked at are Sorel, Aigle and Ariat.

I don't wear trousers so would normally be wearing a leggings / tights under a dress, so don't think I want knee high boots. I'd like them to be properly waterproof (so I can walk through puddles if necessary) but also look like normal boots (as opposed to wellies or hiking boots!).

Please hit me with your recommendations :) I am happy to spend up to £200 for a pair that will last!

Ooh watching with interest, couldn't have asked it better myself!

I've seen recommendations for Dublin River boots which look quite similar to the Dubarry Galway boot. I don't know anything about their sizing though - would love to make the leap myself but I have a wide calf.

I have the Ariat Berwick Gore-Tex Insulated Boot, and they are fantastic. Beautiful to look at, really warm, and totally waterproof. I'm after the Wythburn H2O Insulated ones too, so I have a shorter option.

No more pearls of wisdom heading my way? hmm maybe I'll just pull the trigger on the ariats!

Definitely go for Ariats!

My last pair lasted 10 years of pretty much daily use.

I loved them till they fell apart.

I have had loads of waterproof boots over the years. Toggi Canyons are by far the best value I have found.

TheoriginalLEM · 30/09/2020 19:51

I like the dubarys i could be tempted but my DMs are still going strong from two years - buggar

TheoriginalLEM · 30/09/2020 19:53

The ariats are riding boots though, dont they have a metal rod through the insole.

Saying that, my riding boots got lots of wear as walking boots. I dont ride anymore sadly

I'd never heard of Ariat boots. Now I've seen them I want some! Does anyone know what the fit is like? I have very broad feet with a high instep but fairly average calves I think.
Perhaps it would be better to find somewhere they're sold to try on before buying.

tonsattingforbjudes · 30/09/2020 20:14

Just found their website. Great search facility available. Sadly my feet look unlikely to fit the style I'm hankering after....

Ineedflour · 30/09/2020 20:16

Ariats are lovely. You'll find them at large tack shops, if you want to try them.

Livingthecovidaloca · 30/09/2020 20:25

I bought Dubarry boots last year, and they’re a source of great regret.
They are cosy, but they’re so flat and hard inside the soles that they really make the soles of my feet hurt.

Afibtomyboy · 30/09/2020 20:25

Furnished leather uggs are great

But I’m going to splurge on an Ariat

What’s the sizing like please?!

tonsattingforbjudes · 30/09/2020 20:28

Thank you @Ineedflour
Pretty horsey in my neck of the woods so should be easy to find an appropriate shop!

ScarMatty · 30/09/2020 21:45

Dubarrys are worth every penny IMO

Suzi888 · 30/09/2020 21:50

Following!Wink always have trouble with boots, they always seem way to wide for my leg, unless they’re knee high. Don’t think I have particularly skinny legsHmm

Aftertheharvest · 30/09/2020 22:15

I love my Dubarrys - fit over jeans and properly waterproof (can wade through water). I've found them comfortable. From memory they have options for different calf sizes.

Spudlet · 30/09/2020 22:21

I used to have a pair of Tuffa Suffolks, and I loved them. So warm and cosy! I wore them to death and now I can’t afford a replacement pair ☹️

welshweasel · 30/09/2020 22:24

I love my dubarrys. I have two pairs. One I wear as wellies and the others (slimmer cut with zip) I wear every day over skinnies, with skirts etc.

tinselvestsparklepants · 30/09/2020 22:32

Doc marten Chelsea style boots. Totally warm and waterproof, going into their third winter.

detachablehoof · 30/09/2020 22:55

Thanks for all the votes of confidence in Ariat! I have bought a pair of the Wexford ankle boots. Most expensive shoes I've ever bought for myself Grin

If I hadn't been fussy about colour I could have got them cheaper from here but I particularly wanted the tan colour.

Hopefully they turn up quick!

Are the Dubarry boots true to size?
