Base layer/thermals

I’m a teacher and we have to have all the windows open so my classroom is draughty and chilly! I usually run warm so I’ve never really worried about being cold at work before but now I feel I need some sort of thermal underwear to put on under a jumper etc.

However when I look it’s all long sleeved, high neck tops which would be too oppressive for me, and wouldn’t go under the sort of clothes I wear. I already have a ton of camisole toos so don’t need them but want a little extra warmth. Ideally I want a short sleeved, scoop neck top, but they seem hard to find for some reason. It’d be nice to have “nice” ones, too. Silk, bamboo or merino would be great. Uniqlo do have some but is there anywhere I’m missing?

I have some thermal vests from Sainsbury's which are brilliant. They have vests or long sleeved only though no short sleeve.

Icebreaker - far and above the best merino wool base layers I’ve had - introduced to them by my very outdoorsy DP - you might be able to pick up the odd bit in their sale still.

M & S do some great thermals. They are Heategen and very thin but keep you warm.
They come in a range of styles and colours too. (They did last year at least)

I like uniqlo’s heattech extra warm for every day, and mountain warehouse merino when it’s colder.

I’m also looking at these very cheap silk ones on ebay, though in my experience silk feels lovely but isn’t as warm as other options:

Another vote for Uniqlo heattech thermals. I have a couple of these short sleeved tops and they're great.

Bella di Notte do great vests, merino and silk with scoop neck and half or long sleeve. They're not bulky and wash really well.

I don't think their full winter range is in yet but I do recommend them.

The M&S heatgen thermal tops have scooped necks. I wear them pretty much every day between October and April/May. All the colours! They have normal thickness ones and extra thick ones which have a light fleece backing. They're amazing. I would size up though, the fit is narrow.

They are long sleeve though.

Uniqlo do an incredible range of Heattech. Different colours, low neck, high neck, scoop neck, different levels of warm. I would be amazed if you couldn't find something which would work under your clothing from there and reasonably priced too.

M&S have a good range of thermals - some are stringy strappy vest tops, through cami and short sleeve to long sleeve, and low necked to polo necked styles. (At least, they used to be, I haven't looked this year). But I wear them a lot under office clothes.

I have various merino base layers too - the originals are quite thick for purely outdoors, but now thinner ones are available. I can't think of the high end brands just now, but I know I have some high end (outdoors and ski type) and some Decathlon and all work well.

Another vote for the M&S thermal tops (although I may try the Uniqlo ones, too, this year). Am hoping that M&S will release some more colours/designs of their long-sleeved thermal top soon!

I really like the sainsburys ones, but they don't seem to do the short sleeve ones anymore. Uniqlo are also good and they do short sleeve here
We are also expected to work with all the windows open in a draughty Victorian building all winter. Thankfully I have a pretty good collection of thermals, they never seem to wear out. I might have to get some more long johns though or invest in warmer trousers. Does anyone know if the heatech trousers from uniqlo are any good?

Has anyone tried the decathlon thermals? I like the Uniqlo ones, but I want to get my husband and children kitted out properly for this winter (as I think we'll be outside in all weathers, more so than usual) and it's expensive to get Heattech for everyone! If anyone has tried both I'd love to hear what you thought of them.

I really like the merino wool from Dilling - it is not at all itchy! They do "normal" vests, t-shirts and long-sleeved t-shirts, as well as long-johns and nightwear.

The heattech leggings trousers are sooooo comfy, like very thick leggings/jeggings. They fit me well, but they’re definitely casual rather than smart wear. I see this year they’re doing some smart heattech trousers so I might try those too. I also have a pair of their lined walking trousers, but those are so warm I hardly wear them (can’t imagine hiking in them anywhere warmer than the arctic)

@JofraArchersFastestBall Uniqlo often do money-off offers - get on their mailing list & wait for the £2 or more off Heattech. I've also found that they last for years, even though they look thin, and despite repeated washings, especially of the kids' ones.

I have all heattech thermals too. The scoop neck ones worked really well under dresses.

I also have the heat tech versions of the ultra stretch trousers and they are so comfortable and cosy it's ridiculous. They look no different to the normal ultra stretch versions.

John Lewis heat thermal ones - think do short sleeve. I wear the camisole ones every winter day and they last years and so soft. They sell out by oct / nov which is a bit silly
