I’m looking for a waterproof, happy to spend a decent amount but want something completely waterproof that will last me for years to come. What should I be looking at?

Should add it is for hiking / biking that kind of thing. Not for urban wear / fashion!

Our Rab jackets have lasted over 10 years. Only now starting to need regular Nike axing to keep the waterproof ness. Look at coats that have event or goretex which are waterproof linings

Barbour wax jacket. Had it for 15 years and it is still like new. Use the Barbour wax on it when I remember, ie once every 2/3 years! Totally waterproof and warm.

Bourbonbiccy · 23/09/2020 19:38

My Barbour has been great, but so has my regatta, both lasted years and still going.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 23/09/2020 19:43

Lands' End Squall. I've had it for about 10 years. I find it a little too warm, but I am an extremely hot person generally.

hettie · 23/09/2020 19:48

North Face gortex still totally waterproof after 18 yrs (looks awful mind-ingrained dirt that sunny shift)

JofraArchersFastestBall · 23/09/2020 20:35

Paramo. You've got to re wash with nickwax every year or so, because the fabric is breathable rather than with a waterproof membrane, but it's fabulous to wear and they last forever.

JingleCatJingle · 23/09/2020 21:11

Merrel! It will not die.
I do have to re waterproof it every 2 years or so though.

albird · 23/09/2020 21:15

My Berghaus jacket has lasted 20 years so far!

Annabanana455 · 23/09/2020 21:15

Thanks all. I had a Columbia jacket I was disappointed with as zip broke and lost its waterproof. I replaced it with a Rab off eBay that’s leaky .

Time to invest some money in something decent

+1 to Paramo. In fact I think I’ve only seen well used ones that must be decades old! They have an outlet store on EBay.

Orangedaisy · 23/09/2020 21:19

Mine is Lowe alpine. Not sure they even exist any more. I got it when I was 15 so it’s now 25 years old and going strong.

SadiePurple · 23/09/2020 21:35

Paramo, not the most stylish but it's definitely performed the best (I've had Rab, North Face, Berghaus etc).

SomedayIllFlyAway · 23/09/2020 22:17

Anything with a gore-tex membrane. Brands don’t matter, providing the coat fits you and has the features you need.

In my family we have gore-tex coats which are 25+ years old. They all still function perfectly. Unlike the TNF hyvent and Sprayway Hydrodry coats we’ve had where the coating peeled off after a few years and no longer waterproof.

I’ve never tried Paramo; I run very hot and paramo is known for being warm, so I’ve always avoided it.

Patagonia

Seafog · 23/09/2020 22:19

I wear Viking, they do workwear for construction, fishing, etc.

waterproofed · 23/09/2020 22:22

Didriksons coats are amazing. I had one for 9 years, washed it loads and it’s still 100% waterproof.

ZaraW · 24/09/2020 06:09

North 66, Icelandic. Their fisherman use them. Had mine 8 years.

sansou · 24/09/2020 07:19

My North Face is older than my DC - 18+ yrs and counting.

ScribblyGum · 24/09/2020 07:22

Paramo.

When I read 15 years ago it’s what mountain rescue wear I thought if it’s good enough for them etc

NikWax wash and reproof once a year and it’s still as good as the day I bought it.

They’re a great ethical company too.

attackedbycritters · 24/09/2020 07:23

+2 for paramo. Had mine decades, can't quite see how their business model works

wash it up every now and then

Tore the back rock climbing and they replaced that panel for very little cost

Clementine8 · 24/09/2020 07:24

North Face, i’ve had mine for over 10 years and it’s still in really good condition. I was it with nic wax every now and then.

sansou · 24/09/2020 07:26

There's always past season stuff on sale somewhere.

HelloChompy · 24/09/2020 08:10

I have a Rab one. Mines 7 years old and I work as a dog walker so it gets a lot of use! Lightweight, breathable and waterproof. It is looking a bit tatty now but then I am wearing it for several hours every day from autumn - spring.
