Day dress for a teenager

Hi all

My niece has asked that I get her a day dress for her birthday. Does this just mean a dress to be worn in the daytime or is there another meaning?

Assuming it is just a dress to be worn in the daytime, do any of you know what sort of shops a 14 year old would like? I am happy to spend some money on it but I have a feeling that the shops I think are nice will be too middle aged for her.

She is a standard woman's dress size (UK 10 or 12).

It’s been 5 or 6 years since I bought clothes for a young teenager, but they liked Hollister. Don’t know if that’s still a preferred brand, though!

My 14 yr old likes River island and TopShop, sometimes Next. Finds NewLook a bit flimsy.
I would ask for a gift receipt so she can exchange if it's not a good fit.

What sort does she normally wear, could you get something similar?

Could you ask her to select a few examples online and you choose one of them.

Dd hates most of hollister but likes the dresses there. She prefers urban outfitters. She’s 14 as well and the shorter the dress the better as far as she’s concerned. Anything below mid thigh is gross!
However she does wear them with boots and tights so not as bad as it sounds.
Top shop has some nice dresses as well but again be careful as a lot are more geared towards the 30 something topshop shopper.

I’m sure I had pretty much that dress in the 90s!

I used to have a nearly identical dress that I wore with docs and a white tee and a German army shirt as a coat in the 90’s! Love it!
