Fine / Thin hair - extensions?

Hi! I have fine hair. Freshly washed it looks ok, but needs to be washed everyday ideally as it's so fine it gets greasy.

I have it at shoulder length and like to tie it back sometimes, but it's so fine the ponytail or bun looks pathetic and I often have gaps showing where I'm conscious of my scalp being visible 😩

I long for thicker hair that I can effortless wear in a messy bun / top not!

I don't think any shampoo or product will work - I've tried a lot. Is there something more I can do? Extensions? Plugs?! Or can anyone recommend a style that works with fine hair? Thanks

I think hair looks thicker when it's curled. Could you try that?

I've seen a few people with extensions but to be honest, you can always see the join and it ruins the whole effect.

Extensions will look fantastic you’ve enough length to cover them and you can’t always see the join, not unless you don’t brush your hair. And so what if you can. I’d go for it.

You are my hair twin! I hope someone has suggestions!

I have very fine and thinning hair. I had Beauty Works extensions. They dont cover up balding bits on your scalp. I looked after them properly (the right shampoo, slept with hair in a plait/ ponytail, the right brush, always blowdried my hair) and they were great. I stopped having them in just for a change. Hair is in great condition.

I have the same hair as you and I've had extensions for the last 6 months. Initially I just wanted volume but I love having length too as I was always unable to grow it because it was so fine.

I've had nano bead extensions which were ok, but yesterday I had tape extensions put in. They look so natural and I love them. I would 100% recommend the tape extensions for your hair. The hair lasts for 12 months and I just need to go back every 4-6 weeks to have them taken out and refitted.

You’re my hair twin too.

I find blunt edges (so no layered wispy bits) and lots of Aveda mousse scrunched in help a bit. I am intrigued by the clip in topper wigs that another MN user has previously posted here, but having seen me with thin hair forever I think my friends and colleagues would clock immediately that I was wearing one, and I don’t have the confidence to style that out.

I had volume rows put in at the front of my head to fill in some wispy gaps. Mine were taped Beauty Works and there was no way to tie my hair into a high pony tail or bun without the tapes showing. Low ponies or buns only. I had two packs of hair and it cost about £120 including installation and I had them retaped once and then Covid hit and they’re now too short for my natural hair so won’t be going back in. I probably could have gotten a third retaping before needing them replaced.

You should probably have a consultation with a good extension hairdresser to discuss your needs and they will advise on the right bonds.
