Anyone know anything about hair extensions and colouring?

My hair has got quite a lot thinner so I'm thinking about hair extensions

Do you colour before (I have full highlights) and they match the new hair before they put it in?

I want a drastic colour change too - going from dirty blonde as have loads of grey to a copper/strawberry blonde

The extension people specialise in extensions - I have my own hairdresser for colouring

I believe they need to be coloured after your hair has been done so they match.

Experience from DD where the salon coloured the extensions before her hair, then tried to match her real hair to the fake... it was not a success.

I don't know about the company. Some you can basically treat like your normal hair once in so dye it afterwards for best match. Others you dye it first then colour match.

If you are going to dye the extensions do a strand test with a strand of both the natural and extension hair to check they react the same way, because just because they colour match originally doesn't mean they will colour at the same rate, there may also be different undertones.

I'm having my extensions replaced end of the month, the hairdresser is taking my old ones out, cut/colouring my hair then colour matching my new extensions. I'll go back a couple of days later to have them fitted.

You'll need to have your hair coloured first and then the extensions colour matched to your new hair colour. I would suggest a full head of colour because once you've got them in, you'll not want to have them out too often for a full head. I used to have the top section done and then a full head once a year. My hair was actually in great condition when I had extensions as a result!

I coloured my extensions myself when I had them in, usually when they were nearing the end of their life, I only had 50 prebonded ones in to thicken my hair up. I'm thinking of having them done again as I have grown my hair again during lockdown but having nano beads or angel locks, I need to have my hair coloured before I have them done as I have over a year's regrowth, there is a wider range of colours now from when I first had them done 9 years ago & it will be easier to get them matched up. Best thing to do is have your hair coloured at the same salon you will be having your extensions done, & have nano beads or angel locks which mean they can be removed & refitted when your hair grows, you will probably be able to have your parting & crown highlighted with them in but have them removed & refitted every 6 months to do a full head of highlights, if you have root smudge then your colour will last longer as your roots won't be as obvious, it is cheaper to have a refit than when you have them fitted for the first time, I used to have 50 in to thicken my hair up, a full head takes up to 200 bonds.
