what can i wear instead of leggings?

I wear a lot of tunic type things, jersey tshirt dresses, shirts, oversized sweatshirts, jumpers. Sometimes with tight and boots but lots are a bit too short for tights. For daytime I usually leggings and trainers but leggings aren't very smart for going out.

They are lovely but...£269??!!! Grin

Friendsoftheearth · 05/09/2020 08:30

A more affordable option, esp if you are vegetarian:

I've always thought leggings are the spawn of the devil

No, they were sent from heaven to keep me comfy 😉

This! 😂

Friendsoftheearth · 05/09/2020 08:34

I like the taupe ones, would look great in the autumn

im5050 · 05/09/2020 08:44

I love Spanx leggings I have the leather look ones and the jean type ones
I must have 6 or 7 pairs of them

SJC270 · 05/09/2020 08:46

I think leggings can look really smart - especially with the right footwear! Maybe the problem is that you're so used to wearing them with trainers that you've mentally filed them under casual? A smart pair of boots and some "going out" earrings or a necklace and voila! Perfect :)

iheartwinter · 05/09/2020 08:46

The shiny coated ones remind me too much of Sandy at the end of Grease.

What about some nice jeggings? Can get dark denim and black, or ive seen some in nice brighter colours which might be dressier than leggings?

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 05/09/2020 08:54

Very happy to see all the leggings love here. I dread the day they become so unpopular you can't get them in the shops!

SoManyActivities · 05/09/2020 08:59

I love leggings and like you I wear them with loose tops, oversized jumpers, and dresses that are too short to wear nothing. I know they are not that fashionable now, but I don't really care, I don't know what else I would wear to be honest. I do also have the very skinny M and S high waisted jeggings in 3 colours which I also wear but that doesn't work with some of the dresses.

I used to always buy Topshop leggings but the last pair I bought from there were much thinner and really disappointed. Hated Primark and HM leggings as well, they went all baggy.

Elieza · 05/09/2020 09:00

I’d love to find an alternative that hides my wobbly bits as well as my jeans do! They disguise a multitude of sins.

My wobbly bits being in the inside leg just above the knee. You know the area I mean? It’s a lump of fat on each leg where knee becomes lower inside thigh. Hate them. Over the knee boots worn with thick ‘bombproof’ tights, or leggings hide them really well but I’d like a choice in what I can do to disguise them.

My bum is already hidden by oversize shirts or tunic dresses. But the knee flab isn’t so easy to disguise. :-(

Friendsoftheearth · 05/09/2020 09:01

Nothing wrong with Sandy from Grease!! Esp if you happen to look like her in the skin tight leggings, two decades on and two stone heavier it doesn't really have the same impact Grin

superstar63 · 05/09/2020 09:31

I love leggings, so comfy but dont go out in them unless I have a coat to cover up which is perfect in winter!

Please show me your tunics/longline jumpers?

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 05/09/2020 09:46

I don't actually like them myself (outside of exercise use) but acknowledge that some people manage to make the leather/vegan leather versions look cool.

(I do think the oversized top and skinny legs proportion looks a bit dated right now, but each to their own.)

(I do think the oversized top and skinny legs proportion looks a bit dated right now, but each to their own.)

Maybe that's it. I have never been very bothered about being trendy/fashionable but the big sweatshirt and leggings suddenly looked very middle aged.

superstar63 i tried to add photos but won't work. I'll try a link.

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 05/09/2020 11:31

It doesn't look "middle aged" - millions of middle aged people don't dress in that style. It just looks as if the wearer hasn't reconsidered their wardrobe at all in the last twenty years. (Though there's no obligation to do so, of course.)

Friendsoftheearth · 05/09/2020 11:59

I lived in these last winter, so cosy and looks great with coordinated poncho and slouchy cardigan depending on where you are going. You have to wash them carefully as they are cashmere, but looks seriously stylish out for lunch with the various matching knitwear. Expensive but worth every penny.

Friendsoftheearth · 05/09/2020 12:01

I think that dress would look better with bare legs on a warm day or tights personally op. Boots to dress down, and maybe kitten heels to dress up, I am not an expert but that is how I would wear it.

LouisaMayAlcott · 05/09/2020 12:09

Elieza I too have knee fat. No amount of dieting makes it go and I feel embarrassed wearing leggings because of it, despite them being the most comfortable thing I own!

iheartwinter · 05/09/2020 13:14

I don't have that actual dress, just very similar. It's also a similar length to the jumper dresses and sweatshirts I have.

superstar63 · 05/09/2020 14:27

Thanks for that link of the T shirt dress but I need something warmer - I am a bit of a cold soul but I appreciate it.

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 06/09/2020 14:45

OP I saw this picture and thought of you. These are the proportions currently in fashion with an oversized top.

One would think it could only work on 6 foot tall models - but it's actually quite an adaptable look which I've seen on much shorter, plumper women. It's kind of romantic, no?

StCharlotte · 06/09/2020 16:50

@wizbit93

Ponte leggings are your friend- nice and thick. I've just bought some F&F ones on the Next website for £14. They're great, and make my tummy seem flat as they have a zip and button! Grin
Agreed. Just bought some from Sainsbury's. Bit sturdier than leggings. With Sainsbury's you can size down.
iheartwinter · 06/09/2020 17:16

Yes quite a nice look and comfortable too. Thanks for posting.

As it happens I saw lots of wide trousers yesterday that i thought might be nice. Couldn't try anything on so I figure I will order a few pairs online.

(And I got new leggings too!)

I need to try ponte leggings.
