Help! Patches of my gel polish won't come off

I'm new to home gel polish, this is my first go applying and my first go soaking off. I have small patches on my ring fingers and little fingers of both hands that just will not soak off.

Over the last 3 days I've tried:

  • Soaking in a bowl if acetone for 30 minutes then scratching with the cuticle push-back tool (this is when all the rest came off)
  • Re-tried soaking these four fingers for 30 more minutes.
  • Buy new acetone (in case existing was low quality)
  • 45 minutes with acetone soaked cotton wool balls wrapped in tin foil.
  • when this didn't work I have googled and found the suggestion of heat can help. So have just done 30 mins with soaked cotton wool balls wrapped in to foil, with hands resting on a hot water bottle.

It is just making absolutely zero difference, no small flaking, no fading, no layers coming off, nothing (just drying my nails out).

Help?

Some of that looks like it's underneath the nail?

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 04/09/2020 13:00

File it off.

RainbowRaine · 04/09/2020 13:09

Use a hairdryer for the heat or just file it off gently

You’ll ruin your nails scraping like that.

What brand are you using?.

Use a nail buffer. Use the rough side to buff it off then the other sides to smooth over. Best get a strengthening nail polish and some cuticle oil to help them recover too

This was the brand (ALDI special buy). I've filed it off in the end, which I really didn't want to do because of it damaging my nails.

Any tips on how to avoid it next time? Did I over-cook the varnish under the lamp?

I doubt it was over-cured - do they supply a base coat? The clear base protects your nails from exactly this (usually). Filing off a couple of little bits shouldn't hurt as long as you're not aggressively filing off the natural nail plate.

Try some cuticle oil or almond oil (on the stubborn gel) next time, might help the edges lift a bit. Give the nails a day or two and moisturise, they'll soon be back to normal. Don't panic, they're tougher than you think.

I thought gel polish would just come off Blush I had mine done two weeks ago for the first time ever... it’s growing out now, but hasn’t chipped or anything. Do I need to soak it off? I hate having my cuticles touched Envy

I find this happens when you take it off yourself. I wrap my nails in the foot in wool soaked acetone, wrap tin foil around them and use heat from the hair dryer. I get the polish off with an orange stick.
I really wouldn’t re-soak your nails with acetone again as they look dried out now.
Maybe try some oil, like solar oil, vit e, or even olive oil for a soak and try to remove after that.

In the foot should say tin foil 🙄
