Do I have to wear DMs?

I'm short and fat and in my early 50s. All my friends are buying them and I just cant do it again. I wore them at uni in the 80s and then again in the early 90s. And if I dont get DMs what do I wear on my feet this winterConfused

You wear high heeled dm's!!

ParcelFarce · 03/09/2020 21:10

I feel you OP... Can’t relive the 90s again, it just makes me feel sad! I’ve gone for chunky Chelsea boots this year - hoping they’ll see me through at least a couple of winters.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/09/2020 21:16

I've got some plain white trainers. I usually wear ballet flats, but the winter gets a bit really bloody wet here in Wales so I need something for the inevitable puddles. I did DMs as a teen but never again...

binkyblinky · 03/09/2020 21:16

I have 16 pairs. I'm 41 and I've been wearing them since I was 14. They are the best!

LizzieSiddal · 03/09/2020 21:21

IM 53 and got DM sandals this year. My dd has been telling me I would love them (she’s worn them for years) and she was right. They are so blooming comfy, can’t wait to get a winter pair. Though didn’t wear them in the 80s, so maybe that’s why I don’t mind them this time round.

Anothernamebitesthedust · 03/09/2020 21:23

I’m with you OP. Don’t get the DM thing at all. Wore them all through the 90s. It’s not an age thing - everyone should most definitely wear what they fuck they, 17 or 107 - I just think they’re kind of ugly.

Anothernamebitesthedust · 03/09/2020 21:24

The fuck they like, that should say!

Aprilcherry04 · 03/09/2020 21:49

@Anothernamebitesthedust
I just think they're not my style. I'm not a high heels person either. I love how high heels look but I cant walk in them. Very chunky footwear just makes me feel chunky and kinda ugly

I love DMs. They’re definitely my style and I love the chunky, ugly, clunky look. So I’m gutted that I can’t wear them. They just hurt too much. They’re so heavy, my hips are agony (I’m not even 40 yet ffs). And that’s if I can get past the blisters and callouses from breaking them in. I wish I knew of a lightweight, softer version.

User45 · 03/09/2020 21:59

I get you OP. I'm in my 20s so too young for them the first time round and I think they look awful!

LizzieSiddal · 03/09/2020 22:36

I wear my DM sandals with wide leg jeans or below the knee skirts/dresses, so they don’t look so big. I definitely wouldn’t wear them with leggings or skinny jeans.

Lily193 · 03/09/2020 23:35

I think they're awful. I definitely won't be buying a pair when I reach my 50s.

Krazynights34 · 03/09/2020 23:39

Try Fly by London boots .., wayyy more comfy and in the same kind of arena (but better)

Are your feet small enough for the Youth sizes (4,5,5.5 maybe 6) I bought normal adult sizes and found the leather really stiff; then found same style in youth size and they were soft leather which didn't need breaking in! (And also much cheaper!)
Scoleah · 03/09/2020 23:50

**forgot to add, I found them less heavy too!

Anordinarymum · 03/09/2020 23:56

I've got purple ones. They nearly destroyed my feet breaking them in but it was worth it in the end.

I wear them with leggings

short, fat and early 50's. Nah. You need... Pavers. (lol)

feelingverylazytoday · 04/09/2020 01:33

Lol, you don't 'have to' wear anything, OP. Find something you like and wear them.
I've never worn a pair of DMs in my life, and have no intentions of wearing them in the future.

Basillify · 04/09/2020 03:06

I was warned about the pain of breaking them in but decided to buy them anyway. I went for the made in britain version. They cost a bit more but the leather was noticably softer than the normal
version and has a nice raw edge. While there was still a bit of pain wearing them in, after a couple of wears with big chunky boot socks they were absolutely fine.

All that said, I don't love them. They now seem to be very popular, so much more than when I bought them. Much prefer my Grenson boots which are far comfier and less chunky so I'll be investing in a new pair to see me through winter.

NameChange84 · 04/09/2020 03:42

Bloody hell no! They’ve always been hideous. Hated the look of them as a child in the 90s. Hate them in my 30s. I tend to wear quite fine, fitted boots with a block heel in suede, mock crock or snakeskin, leather or even velvet if I’m going full on 90s. I get mine from Kurt Geiger, Carvela or Faith.

LesLavandes · 04/09/2020 06:25

I think they are very ugly.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 04/09/2020 06:32

I love the look of DMs on other people but they look ridiculous on me. I'm not very tall and have quite thin legs but size 8 feet. They look massive at the end of my very short legs!

I have Fly boots which are great.
