Do I have to wear DMs?

I'm short and fat and in my early 50s. All my friends are buying them and I just cant do it again. I wore them at uni in the 80s and then again in the early 90s. And if I dont get DMs what do I wear on my feet this winterConfused

@IaltagDhubh

I love DMs. They’re definitely my style and I love the chunky, ugly, clunky look. So I’m gutted that I can’t wear them. They just hurt too much. They’re so heavy, my hips are agony (I’m not even 40 yet ffs). And that’s if I can get past the blisters and callouses from breaking them in. I wish I knew of a lightweight, softer version.
I have dm hightop trainers

I have both Fly boots and DMs. Love them both. Tend to avoid the black DMs tho, and go for the Pascal version which come in lovely colours. Get endless compliments when I wear them, which being short and fat is unusual. I tend to wear them with dressier clothes tho like proper trousers and dresses. Not really with jeans.

Oh FGS seriously? You're in your 50s and think you have to wear what your pals wear even though you don't like it??
Assuming you're joking...wear whatever boots or shoes you do like. If you need something new, have a look in the shops/online and see what makes you smile.

I've got some lace up Fly boot- they look neater than DMs and want to get some Timberlands weekend walks around the local woods and countryside.

I hear you OP. I'm late 40s and not mad on DMs, never have been. However I will happily admit to being a bit of a slave to fashion so in a nod to the upcoming autumn/winter trend I have bought a pair that are similar in style but just from a local boutique and very reasonable. I have no desire to spend big money or go through the pain of breaking in pair of DMs. That's as far as I'm prepared to go for fashion! and hopefully they'll go out of fashion next year

Yes there is some tone of mirth and irony in my OP. I just mean what kind of black boot could I wear with black tights and dresses this winter if DMs aren't my thing. A lot of my friends are slavishly buying them whether they suit them or not.

Take a look at all of these Black Boots. Surely there is something within such a huge variety that would appeal to you?

Balaur · 05/09/2020 10:10

I've just got some DM Emmelines, recommended on another thread. They are much less chunky than traditional DMs and very beautiful imo. I got the very dark red.

Ninkanink · 05/09/2020 10:14

Just wear Chelsea boots or other ankle boots instead.

I really like Timberland for day to day boots. They do lots of different styles and are much nicer looking in my opinion.

Scabetty · 05/09/2020 10:38

I have DMs; shoes and boots so don’t share your hate but have you looked at All Saints boots? The biker cross cowboy style looks great with legging and tights. I had ruled them out as an over 50 myself but saw a stylish 50+ wearing them and think they are definitely a contender for my winter wardrobe.

Scabetty · 05/09/2020 10:39

Also monkey boots are very wearable and not so chunky.

thedevilinablackdress · 05/09/2020 10:45

What's your budget OP, and then we can indulge in some fantasy boot shopping on your behalf Smile
(No new boots for me this year as a) I have plenty, and b) nowhere to go...)

SallyOMalley · 05/09/2020 10:53

A bit off topic but ... Has anyone else had issues with Fly boots leaking?! I've got two pairs and they both leave my feet sopping wet when it rains - even when I avoid the puddles. It's put me right off buying any more .

SallyOMalley · 05/09/2020 10:54

(am thinking of going for the DM Floras instead)

Henio · 05/09/2020 11:01

You definitely don't have to wear them! What to wear depends on your clothing style really

Just wear the style of boots you like. Why shouldn't your friends buy them if they don't suit- maybe they just like them? Just wear what you like and don't worry about what others think.

Aprilcherry04 · 05/09/2020 13:46

Budget would be up to £60. Think I would like black chunky ish chelsea boots

Ninkanink · 05/09/2020 13:47

If you can wait til Black Friday sales or January sales you will get Timberland boots at a reasonable price for the quality. A bit more than your budget but not by much.

Ninkanink · 05/09/2020 13:48

Otherwise Dune or Office often have good styles at pretty good prices.

ChickensMightFly · 05/09/2020 13:52

Fly boots? Lots of styles.

rorosemary · 05/09/2020 13:54

You're in your 50s and you still follow what your friends wear? Wear whatever the fuck you want, embrace your own style. Stop being a follower, that's for children.

So what did you wear in other winters the last couple of decades?

SuzieCarmichael · 05/09/2020 14:07
