Do you or anyone you know just wear black and if so why?

I have a friend who always just wears black (she sometimes wears a coloured coat or bright lipstick or shoes or has a bright coloured bag) but in the main she always just wears black. She seems to always look good but I wondered if I was to always wear black that I think I'd look like either a member of the Adams Family or someone in constant mourning (like Queen Victoria). Are there any tips or ways to wear black and not look like this?

80% on my wardrobe is black. The rest is black and white, a few reds and blues or purple.

I like me better in black. And everything in the wardrobe goes with everything else.

ToastyFingers · 03/09/2020 09:25

I mostly wear black, although I do occasionally like a floral pattern or a colourful pump.

I think having lots of different fabrics and textures in your wardrobe helps, and experimenting with different cuts and silhouettes can be fun.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/09/2020 09:32

Yep, me. Goth. I do have some bits of dark grey and purple for when I'm feeling jazzy.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 03/09/2020 09:35

Me, I have some things that are mainly black with splashes of colour but everything is black as a base.

For a few reasons

  • I like black, I lean towards goth
  • I think it suits me
  • it's so easy to shop when you can just glance around and head straight to the black stuff or online can filter the whole site down to colour and be left with just a few things
  • everything in my wardrobe matches. I pick a pair of trousers or skirt and a top and know they will work together. Easy!

I add colour through my hair which changes from red to purple to blue to pink dependant on my mood and what colour I fancied that week.

I know a few people who do this and imo it looks shit. People seem to think black is a neutral colour that anyone can pull off when actually you have to have particular colouring to pull off solid black. Also black clothes fade so usually people end up wearing several varying shades of grey and it just looks scruffy.

AnaViaSalamanca · 03/09/2020 09:53

I have a friend that wears only black. Sometimes she adds white. She does it well though, expensive items in different textures. She is slim, blonde, and tanned, and looks quite good. I think the key is to mix textures, don't buy cheap polyester, and also accessorize well. You can add pops of color with accessories.

I don't look good in all black because i am pale and have dark hair and also not that slim (size 10 and petite), so kind of wednesday adams.

Check out carine roitfeld for inspiration.

Hailtomyteeth · 03/09/2020 09:58

All black. The better the quality and cut (and by that I mean 'better for you' because a well-cut garment in good fabric will still look bad if it doesn't suit you) the better you will look.
People who think it 'looks shit' can wear something else.

I used to wear 95% black. A mix of formal and casual, it was just that I prefer black and being a cool winter, I know it suits me. (I had somewhat goth-ish tendencies in the past which may have influenced it - coming off the back of a childhood in lovely twee pastels because it suited my DSis better and when DM was sewing clothes for us both, well, she who screams loudest, gets what she wants!! So once I got a choice, I went heavy on dark).

I actually got my colours done a few years ago. And now, although black still looms large in my wardrobe, I actually have a mix of other colours too that suit me - navy, deep reds, pine green, black-brown (not orange/yellow based brown), aubergine purple, and some lighter colours in shades that work.

In winter, I tend towards darker colours still. Even in summer, there is still a lot of black and navy, but some brighter bits too.

Lottapianos · 03/09/2020 10:10

I used to know someone who wore all black most of the time. Her reasoning was that black always matches black, so she didn't have to think about which colours went together! She didnt look fab, she looked like someone who didnt give a stuff about clothes, and she didn't, so that's fine.

Not for me. I agree with others that black is not the universally flattering colour its cracked on to be, and I dont think it suits many people.

Ponks · 03/09/2020 10:12

90% black clothes.

If I ever try on the same item of clothing in black and then another colour, it always looks better in black. End of.

mrslebon · 03/09/2020 10:43

It can be so unflattering and draining. I rarely wear black near my face unless it’s a gym top. I love the washed black that Hush do but I would tend the load on the bronzer if I’m wearing black. Ex goth also!

tsmainsqueeze · 03/09/2020 10:51

Me -90% black , rest made up of grey , denim ,sometimes blue .
I love to look at colour around me and i love make up and a brightly coloured bag , but black is me .
I have given in now trying to steer myself away from black , it just feels right .

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 03/09/2020 11:27

I have a friend that only wears black. She is a bit overweight so I'm not sure if it's a confidence thing? She's actually really pretty I think she'd look lovely in some colour! I would never say this to her, it's none of my business, each to their own.

SadiePurple · 03/09/2020 11:31

A colleague only ever wears black and it really doesn't do her any favours. I suspect it's because the items are quite shapeless and limp, and everything is a little too faded. It's all black, so top plus jacket or cardigan plus very long skirt plus shoes, no splash of colour anywhere.

Stabbitha · 03/09/2020 11:41

People who think that they look best in black, rarely do.

Rebelwithallthecause · 03/09/2020 11:42

I wear black but occasionally wear a navy blue pair of jeans or a white top

Rebelwithallthecause · 03/09/2020 11:45

My typical outfit would be black skinny jeans, high top converse , white or black T-shirt with a black blazer or leather jacket

I add a scarf in winter (aubergine or leopard print) and also layer with necklaces and earrings

minipie · 03/09/2020 11:45

We know an architect who only wears black. Because he’s an architect Grin. It suits him.

I think black only suits those who have very strong colouring - dark hair and skin, or very dark hair/pale skin, or red hair/pale skin, or very blonde. I have wishy washy English colouring so black is awful on me.

thedevilinablackdress · 03/09/2020 11:48

I'd say it a) needs to suit you and b) you do it a very deliberate way with a particular style (architect, Goth) and c) good quality materials/cut

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 03/09/2020 11:49

i have a colleague who only wears black. TBH I hadn't realised until se mentioned, which I guess means that she looks fine, but not so great I particularly notice what she wears (unlike some colleagues who I notice dress well).

MolotovMocktail · 03/09/2020 12:08

Ex goth here too. I’m a soft summer so trying to move myself off it as it’s not the best on me, but it is definitely my comfort zone and until recently was all I wore. I feel fat in lighter colours (which is my own issue probably as I’m only a 12/14 and would never think anyone else my size is fat).

Ginandplatonic · 03/09/2020 12:14

I wear lots of black. If not black usually grey or occasionally blue. I am a cool winter so it suits. I tried buying things in other colours but found I didn’t wear them, so now stick with my black!

Sauvignonblanket · 03/09/2020 12:28

I wear lots of black dresses - it all started from keeping things simple on the wardrobe front. It also suits my colouring. I then have an interesting bag or colourful coat. I wouldn't do it if I didn't also wear eyeliner all the time though.

OhRosalind · 03/09/2020 12:44

If I ever try on the same item of clothing in black and then another colour, it always looks better in black. End of

This. Some people (I’m a winter) suit black. I think varied textures, a flattering cut, and the clothes actually being black, not faded by washing grey, are what keeps it looking chic.

Palavah · 03/09/2020 12:50

I have a colleague who only wears black, white, and denim.

--She's short and skinny and pretty and blonde and young and all those things already make it-- easier to get dressed in the morning. Makes laundry simpler, too.

I find navy more flattering, but I also have lots of white and bright colours because I found when I was just wearing black/grey navy it was really dull and depressing.
