Do you or anyone you know just wear black and if so why?

I have a friend who always just wears black (she sometimes wears a coloured coat or bright lipstick or shoes or has a bright coloured bag) but in the main she always just wears black. She seems to always look good but I wondered if I was to always wear black that I think I'd look like either a member of the Adams Family or someone in constant mourning (like Queen Victoria). Are there any tips or ways to wear black and not look like this?

I used to wear black and black only. This was back before I left New Zealand and was living in a city which at the time (no idea if it’d still the same now) the only really acceptably fashionable shade for women to wear was black.. so pretty much every woman word black, anything else was judged. I was young and had no idea, I’d grown up in a tiny town (6k people) and there was no fashion scene to speak of and my parents didn’t have the money for me to explore fashion as a teen anyway..
These days my wardrobe is still fairly black dominated though I don’t wear as much all black, today I’m wearing black jeans and a T-shirt but it’s been a while since I’ve worn this much black in one outfit.. I’m making up for all my black on black years, I sew a lot of my own clothes and go wild for bright colours and prints Grin

I only wear black for work in winter. In fact I take it further - I wear the same black trousers every day (have several pairs), with a variety of black tops.

Reasons:

  • saves time in the mornings as no decisions to be made
  • looks smart
  • everything goes together
  • work can involve getting a bit messy so dark colours are best

There are really mixed examples of who does and does not suit black on this thread, e.g. some people saying they or a friend suit it bc dark hair/pale skin/cool winter etc and others saying they don't bc their hair is too dark or skin too pale. Others mentioning warm skin and hair looking good with black. So clearly it's pretty subjective.

Personally, I think part of the appeal of black is that it's not always "flattering". It suggests people aren't bothered about looking as pretty as possible.

I heard this from one woman before. She was assaulted and never wanted to stand out. She wore black for years and it never suited her. She since moved countries and is in a better place mentally, and she started to wear colours (and dresses again). She looks like a different person in the best possible way.

Its not just being pale its the undertone of the skin, hair etc.
I wear black because i like it.
I actually dont mind looking like an italian widow or morticia. I like that look. It doesnt feel like me in colour. Navy and white make me look ill.
