Do you or anyone you know just wear black and if so why?

I have a friend who always just wears black (she sometimes wears a coloured coat or bright lipstick or shoes or has a bright coloured bag) but in the main she always just wears black. She seems to always look good but I wondered if I was to always wear black that I think I'd look like either a member of the Adams Family or someone in constant mourning (like Queen Victoria). Are there any tips or ways to wear black and not look like this?

Expensive, well cut black clothes always look good IMO. I'm blonde with quite warm skin tones so black doesn't wash me out.

A black cashmere sweater from Brora + black jeans from Joseph + quality leather black boots is a whole world away from an all black, but slightly faded, polyester outfit from George @ Asda and cheap shoes.

Agree with peaceanddove - there's black and then there's cheap overwashed black. Black in good cuts and fabrics looks very chic

Zenithbear · 03/09/2020 13:57

I love black but it's unrequited. I'm far too pale for it, I look like the undead.
I therefore stick to black bottom half clothes only. Except for when it's mixed in with a colour that suits me eg. a metallic blackish shiny jacket, black and grey jumper and silver and black dress which look fab.

IsadoraQuagmire · 03/09/2020 14:03

I used to have a girlfriend who did, it only looked good on her because she had very white skin, always wore red lipstick, and dyed her hair black (and was very beautiful)
I never wear it personally, I hate black in clothes, furnishings, cars, everything.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 03/09/2020 14:09

I love black but even in my more extreme goth days I could never wear all back because it didn't feel right. I actually think the idea that black goes with black is totally wrong, I think its actually really hard to match blacks unless its a totally different texture ie leather skirt and cotton top.

my wardrobe is 75-80 per cent black. The rest is white, grey and a bit of navy.

Reasons:
I like to keep it simple. I can combine pretty much everything with everything. I have a minimalistic approach to clothing and it's much easier to have a functionional wardrobe with a narrow colour scheme. I need far less clothes (and hence can afford to buy better quality for the few pieces I buy). I look therefore far more together and not frumpy at all with minimal effort. I am a winter so it really suits me!

thedevilinablackdress · 03/09/2020 15:12

I too love black but it doesn't love me back.
Slowly transitioning (most) of it out of my wardrobe. Not the velvet though!!! Never be parted from the black velvet.

beguilingeyes · 03/09/2020 15:13

Black is only for funerals.

It completely washes me out so I never wear it. Lots of navys and browns and dove gray. Love a red too.

LaPampa · 03/09/2020 17:03

I have a friend who pretty much always wears black but she’s a designer and it’s always nice clothes. She looks good.

I mainly wear black/ grey/ navy and occasional white/beige knitwear or shirt. I probably can count on one hand the coloured items I have and I barely wear them.

AhFiddledeedee · 03/09/2020 19:35

90% of my wardrobe is black. It's not intentional really, but I know where I am with it. It's my default, it has been for years.

I'll try to add some colourful tights or a scarf to break it up a bit.

Alongcameacat · 03/09/2020 20:41

I think black only suits those who have very strong colouring - dark hair and skin, or very dark hair/pale skin, or red hair/pale skin, or very blonde.

This^

I know two people who wear black. They wear it ‘because it’s easy”. Neither are stylish and both wear badly cut clothes that are varying shades of black.

Black clothes need to be well cut and replaced regularly to have any hope of attempting to achieve ‘a look’.

chunkyrun · 03/09/2020 20:51

One person, it's more a self conscious thing. Black leggings oversized black tops

AltogetherAndrews · 03/09/2020 21:00

I wear mostly black, pale skin and brightly coloured hair. I do it because I like it, I’m a bit goth, and I’m not trying to look chic, or well put together, I like scruffy. I like the way I look. Other people seem to react well to it too.

I tried the whole normal clothes thing when I was in my 30’s to try and fit in at the mum and baby groups, but fuck it I would rather just be me. I feel a million times better in black.

KittyWindbag · 04/09/2020 06:03

I Don’t exclusively wear black but I am always drawn to it and it usually makes me feel good if I’m having a low confidence day. There are caveats - it needs to look fresh, well-cut and clean. I know objectively it’s not the colour that suits me most. But I think well-cut, good quality black clothing tends to look smarter, more fashionable and more stylish. That’s just my personal feeling! I feel cool in black.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 04/09/2020 07:00

I love black on me. I think it suits me (auburn hair, lots of freckles).

I wear lots of dark colours - navy, charcoal, dark red, bottle green, brown.

I tend to go for good quality natural fibres and interest comes from different textures.

I think the main reason I do it is because it suits me, pretty much all light colours look horrendous on me and wash me out. I also like the fact that if I spill a bit of food on myself, i can’t see it. With light clothes I have to get changed halfway through the day and find it difficult to get stains out.

I also think I look cool! Not sure everyone agrees though!

BusterGonad · 04/09/2020 07:57

I had a friend who always wore black, it suited her because she was slim and pretty with a quirky look (face) and cool hair. For me black is the last colour I'd choose in anything. I will always choose a pattern or navy, purple, grey etc I think I suit black but I find it very uninspiring and to me it looks like you are trying to hide away and blend into the back ground. Maybe due to my hang ups about it being slimming etc I'd just rather see colour and feel cheerful. With saying that some people look really stunning and sophisticated in it but I'm not someone who looks perfect and done up I'm very much a bed head type with a bright lipstick and floral popping up somewhere!

Borderstotheleftofme · 04/09/2020 08:42

I pretty much never wear black.
I am deathly, ghostly white skinned with lot black hair so not a good look!

I have a gorgeous, gamine friend (shades of Audrey Hepburn, though she doesn't dress that way) who only ever wears black. Think the only time I've seen her in colour was on her wedding day (she didn't wear white!). I think for her it's an ease of dressing thing but I've always thought it was a bit of a shame she didn't wear colour more tbh.

She looks fine, more architect than goth, always elegant and well put-together, but never as amazing as she could do. But it's none of my business really so wouldn't dream of saying anything.

HUCKMUCK · 04/09/2020 08:55

I have a friend who wears 90% black - anything else is grey or white.

She always looks really well put together. It suits her skin tone, she has mastered the art of layering and it just suits her.

Namara · 04/09/2020 09:01

How do you know if you suit black ??

I know I suit navy and dark grey and burgundy but not sure if I suit black or not. It's not a definite 'no this doesn't suit me' like most other colours are. I look the most awful in white, cream and light pink.

I've medium / dark blonde hair, quite pale skin, dark blue eyes.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/09/2020 09:57

I'm not sure you'll get many gothy types who care whether people think they look washed out or wrong in just black. There seems to be some quite strong negative opinions on it! I am very pale, very dark hair and I do not blend into the background in my black. I also don't wear crappy faded stuff. I have tried to be 'colourful' but it just isn't me and I felt like a clown.

I know someone who only wears black. It suited her a lot better when she was younger as her skin tone has become lighter as she ages. Wearing black near her face seems to emphasise the lines and wrinkles. She’s got winter colouring and I think she’d look stunning in bright colours, but she’s not a good enough friend for me to ever say anything!

mrwalkensir · 04/09/2020 12:17

Another cool winter here. It's better nowadays with online shopping, but with the majority of UK women not being cool winters, it used to be hard to get hold of any clothes apart from black, grey and navy.
