I have been invited out for a friend's birthday drinks.

It will be cocktail/wine bar type of night.

I however am more country pub in my wellies after walking the dog. So I need some guidance please Mumsnet, can you advise me?

I am 5'7 pale skin red hair and size 12/14.

I'm not very good with heels but can wear them if they aren't to high or wedges.

Thanks in advance. Grin

Sorry I'm probably not the best person as I fit into the same camp as you!

The only advice I can give is wear something you feel comfortable in. I don't wear heels anymore, it's not me and I'm always in pain by the end of the night. Wedges I can do though, so for a bar night would pair with skinny jeans and a top. Bit of jewellery and nice hair and make up.

Sorry I'm not more help but it might give this thread a bump to someone with more of a clue than me Smile.

Have a fun night!

What will the friends be wearing, what level of casual or formal, where do you like to shop and when you have bought going out stuff in the past what did you like best?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 22/08/2020 12:45

What about skinny jeans, nice top and wedges? That's my 'go to' if I want to look a bit dressed up but not too dressy.

mynameiscalypso · 22/08/2020 12:46

When is it? Once it gets to September, I happily crack out my ankle boots plus skinny jeans. It feels wrong to do it in August though

BullshitVivienne · 22/08/2020 12:51

You're tall enough not to wear heel if you don't like them. I wear flat shoes or sandals, I can't remember when I last wore a heel.

I would go for smart trousers (black) and a top / blouse. ASOS has some nice ones, try searching for Vero Moda.

BullshitVivienne · 22/08/2020 12:53

Heels. I did not mean to use the fashion singular.

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/08/2020 13:01

What kind of place is it? What are your friends wearing? My friends and I always swap ideas about what we are planning to wear before we go out. I would likely wear skinny jeans, heeled boots and maybe a sparkly top, if it’s that kind of place. Or maybe a dress with heeled boots - but I do like my heels, lol. Nice earrings too! Have a great time.

liloleme · 22/08/2020 13:50

Thanks for the advice everyone.

To answer a few questions. I know we are going for cocktails at the posh end of town.

I feel a bit of an idiot to be asking my friend what they are wearing tbh. We aren't best mates if yswim.

I feel like I should just know what to wear. I'm in 40s and feel like I should know this by now! 😆

Skinny jeans tend to be my go to. And I don't mind wearing them. I'm more at a loss as what constitutes a nice top?

I'm a bit of a if it's cheap I'll get person.

The people I'll be out with have money. I don't won't to look out of place.

Thanks so much for replying.

Skinnies are fine but what is your preferred style. I’m quite preppy but some people like floral or floaty. What sort of colours? It’s quite hard to narrow it down otherwise Grin

Tryingtobemybestself · 22/08/2020 18:43

Have a look at silkfred they have some very nice "going out" tops

Bloomburger · 22/08/2020 18:53

A silk vest and blazer and shoes to match the colour of the vest, even wedges, they don't have to be hard to walk in.

Reiss do nice silk vests (which aren't straps) and blazers and they'll never go out if fashion.

Obviously with your skinny jeans.

liloleme · 23/08/2020 10:39

Thank you for the suggestion I've decided on skinny jeans and a silk vest top with a blazer.

Thanks for helping everyone. Thanks
