Is there a moral restriction on the number of coats and jackets a person should own?

Just asking. For a friend.

OP posts:

If there is, I’m off to hell.

In a fucking fabulous coat.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 20/08/2020 18:28

I'm going to go and count them all...

Nordstrom · 20/08/2020 18:32

My mum has 40 plus. Think she has a problem.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 20/08/2020 18:44

I think coats - and to a lesser extent jumpers - are exempt from worries about over consumption. It's a primal thing - they keep you warm and dry so your survival might depend on having the right one for every occasion.

That's what I tell myself anyway. I love coats.

AuntyFungal · 20/08/2020 18:56

^^

BrennieGirl · 20/08/2020 19:01

I have a lovely collection of jackets and coats. I've spent the last 10 or 15 years buying really nice quality pieces. I have the perfect denim jacket, cream linen jacket, beautiful wool coats in navy, black, camel, green etc etc.

But since last year I've lost 6 stone so none of my beautiful collection fits me anymore Sad

BrennieGirl · 20/08/2020 19:03

Sorry posted too soon.

So I'm restarting my collection. It's quite good fun but very expensive.

I'm still sad about some of my old coats and jackets though. I can't bring myself to give them away.

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 20/08/2020 19:05

I have loads and loads and loads. All of them are definitely necessary.
It becomes a moral problem when and if they’re made from the skins of endangered species or if your children have to sleep in the broom cupboard because you’ve commandeered their bedroom as a walk in wardrobe.

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 20/08/2020 19:06

Find yourself a good tailor and have them altered Brennie.

JMAngel1 · 20/08/2020 19:42

Oh god, I daren't count!
I still have the mentality that I NEED a new coat every winter and a new blazer every spring - I rarely get rid of them.
I am 48 now - you do the math Grin

BlackSwan · 20/08/2020 19:50

Morally no. And the question is irrelevant and should be struck from the record.

From a style perspective, it's far better to have 4 excellent quality coats and jackets than 20 budget, nubby, ill-fitting, shapeless poor quality coats.

BrennieGirl · 20/08/2020 20:04

@FunnyItWorkedLastTime

Find yourself a good tailor and have them altered Brennie.
I have had a couple of them taken in and they were fine for last winter, but some just dont look quite right IYKWIM. The shoulders are too broad.

I have a particular Boden jacket that I really love but it has a lot of seams and I think it would be too complicated to alter. I have a friend that I’ve given any of my old decent quality clothes to, so I will give her the jacket eventually. Just not yet.

DasPepe · 20/08/2020 20:13

There are posters on here with coats too small and posters whose coats are now too big, after weight loss.

Now I have a practical/ economical mind (this is a genuine diagnosis :) )
Do you see where this could go?

We could coat swap! I have several beauty pieces, which no longer fit me after lockdown and post surgery weight gain

peaceanddove · 20/08/2020 21:21

@LunaNorth

Only the one coat [head tilt]
SchnitzelVonKrumm · 20/08/2020 21:27

The formula for coats is C+1, where C is the number of coats you already own.

CathyorClaire · 20/08/2020 21:35

Hi, Tribe Smile

OP, your quest is only over when you have a coat for every occasion. Occasions will always outnumber available coats because that's the way the universe works.

LunaNorth · 20/08/2020 21:37

I’ll get my minions to follow me down with the rest 😈

vixxo · 21/08/2020 00:05

Too many. I really like the idea of a capsule wardrobe with one good winter coat and a classic trench but that's never going to happen.

binkydinky · 21/08/2020 00:15

I think coats & jackets are overlooked & most people need more. I have about 10 different black jackets alone as some look better with dresses, then it depends on the shape of the dress, etc

evilharpy · 21/08/2020 07:40

I have a real coat addiction. Living in the UK but being very cold blooded I wear a coat or jacket for about 8 months of the year and I like variety. I must have 40 odd. Not counting things like blazers. I think I have three but maybe four navy blazers alone.

TollgateDebs · 21/08/2020 08:57

I hope not!!

Gurufloof · 21/08/2020 09:02

I haven't counted but about 18 long coats, 25 jackets, 3 coatigans and probably hundreds of hoodies.
I love a good hoodie me.
Anyway I have a wardrobe just for coats and jackets.
This doesn't include (because they dont count obviously) the multiple jackets hanging in the hallway that are used by anyone, I think 10/15 hanging up.
And I keep seeing more that I would like to buy, but currently not buying.

foxtiger · 21/08/2020 09:44

I don't think it's a moral issue unless you are spending more than you can really afford, or neglecting things you need more (it would be silly to collect 150 coats and say you can't afford to do something about the damp in your bedroom, for example).

For me it's mainly a space issue. I find coats and jackets quite interesting and probably have about 10-15 of various kinds, (including everything, like waterproofs and fleeces). In some ways I would like to have more, just because there are so many beautiful pieces out there and, like most items of clothing, they're just an interest/hobby of mine. In other ways I think I would like to have less. I think if I had the perfect long, elegant winter wool coat, the perfect padded winter jacket, the perfect smart black jacket and the perfect neutral coloured (maybe cream or taupe) denim jacket, all so beautiful and well-cut that they made me feel great every time I put them on, I wouldn't really need any more. Oh, maybe a trench? My entire style veers wildly between minimalism and maximalism so my opinions on this would be no surprise to anyone who knows me.

minicat · 21/08/2020 09:46

I’m tall and I get too warm too easily so don’t get on with many coats - I have one leather jacket and one raincoat and that’s it. I wish I could find more I liked.

DH has a lot, however.

I don’t think it matters if - if! - you have space for them and you actually wear them.

TSSDNCOP · 21/08/2020 10:06

I lose my mind when it comes to coats and shoes. I have to smuggle them into the house under cover of darkness.
