What is it that makes someone look wealthy / polished?

Piggy backing onto the thread a few weeks ago about what looks 'common / tacky'.

It's a mystery to me - for instance I know someone who just looks so elegant and wealthy and it's effortless and interestingly carries a logo'd Louis Vuitton bag which was unanimously voted as tacky on here. But on her, it looks great and chic.

Do you know the vibe I mean, an inner confidence / calmness paired innate style!

On paper I could and should be polished but frankly I look disheveled (at best).

I think it's time and effort. When I can be arsed I can look good. But equally I look like a tramp when I can't be arsed, hair in a pony tail, jeans and T-shirt (not in a good way) it's one extreme to the other, either looking fab, or looking like Miss Trunchbull from Matilda

Be thin. Even the simplest clothes look great if you’re thin. If you’re not thin then you can’t achieve this look. Of course you need to be able to afford gym membership, free time to go to the gym, healthy food, etc. So I suppose being thin comes down to money?

Other than that: Get your teeth whitened. Get facial treatments and tanning. Get your eyebrows done. Have regular hair appointments (and probably dye your hair blonde). Wear nice jewellery and shoes, and decent clothes in a good state of repair. Basically it comes down to money again!

No I think it's down to genes as well

I think a lot of being thin comes down to money. Better quality food, more money for protein and a range of veg, not cheap fatty carbs. And, I suspect crucially, more money to spend on comfort. Lots of overweight people comfort eat to cover emotional issues and stress. If you are wealthy you can afford therapy, retreats, massages, spas, retail therapy, mini breaks and holidays in the sun during winter months, membership to gyms, personal trainers etc etc. You have more options than reaching for a Poundland four pack of Double Deckers.

@FreshfieldsGal Yep, the richest people I know look like tramps!

namitynamechange · 25/08/2020 13:10

All the just being thin stuff. Crack addicts tend to be thin. They don't tend to look wealthy and polished. So there is waaaay more to it than that...

namitynamechange · 25/08/2020 13:23

Also, the whole thin, blonde tanned thing just made me think of this:

peaceanddove · 25/08/2020 13:32

Creating and maintaining a really nice, clear, natural blonde colour requires money + time spent sitting in a good salon. When done properly it looks polished and expensive (because it is). A box dye tends to just turn your hair a cheap yellow.

Cocaine too, probably.
BunnyLovesBananas · 25/08/2020 18:36

Cocaine too, probably.

I know a few slim people including myself who have always been slim and not due to cocaine or drugs Confused

I think if you don't have much money but want to look like you do, buying secondhand, you'll always get more for your money than spending it in Primark which are basically rags. Better for the environment too. A nice blazer or jacket can give jeans and T-shirt combo a bit of oomph, giving your t-shirt a slight tuck into belted jeans would look even better, making your outfit look considered but not ott. Clothes must fit well, wealthy people probably have access to someone who can alter clothes. Nice accessories probably draw the eye, but you don't need to wear a Rolex to achieve that. I agree that having time and money to look after yourself, maybe your job is not physically demanding or stressful and you can take lots of holidays, it's gonna make you look better!

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 25/08/2020 19:46

@MaybeDoctor

I think it tends to come down to:

Being blonde (mostly)
Being slim
Wearing pale or neutral colours (mostly)
Leather, linen and cashmere

I am not saying that any of these are 'better' but that is what I observe.

Extraordinary.

Vast majority of the world need not apply?

Old money - chubby, strangely cut baggy trousers, utility footwear, cashmere jumpers with holes, worn with shirts with frayed collars but cufflinks. No engagement ring with their wedding ring, but a gold watch with a leather strap. Wild hair, tanned skin with ruddy cheeks, untamed eyebrows, snaggled fingernails, characterful teeth.

Haute bourgeoisie - straight and shiny hair expensively maintained, poreless and slightly immobile skin, perfect eyebrows, perfectly straightened and whitened teeth, painted nails in an elegant colour, expensively minimal jewellery, understated make-up and nails, expensive but unshowy clothing, always ironed, with a stainless steel expensive watch, usually a Cartier Tank. The new money subgroup likes a lot of recognisable branding on their bags and shoes, and big diamonds in their rings, ears, and around the bezel of their watch.

Haute bohemian - very tanned faces with long mermaid hair that may never have seen a brush. Ethnic clothing that exposes unusual, very tanned erogenous zones such as shoulders or midriffs. Cartier and Pippa Small jewellery worn with loom bands and pony beads, and an obscenely expensive man’s diving watch. Hats. Perfect hair, skin, nails, and teeth, but all ageing prematurely because of their love of holidays and recreational drugs. So thin you suspect an eating disorder.
