What is it that makes someone look wealthy / polished?

Piggy backing onto the thread a few weeks ago about what looks 'common / tacky'.

It's a mystery to me - for instance I know someone who just looks so elegant and wealthy and it's effortless and interestingly carries a logo'd Louis Vuitton bag which was unanimously voted as tacky on here. But on her, it looks great and chic.

Do you know the vibe I mean, an inner confidence / calmness paired innate style!

On paper I could and should be polished but frankly I look disheveled (at best).

@GrumpyHoonMain I don't know why tbh. I think Priyanka & Mindy both look fab & Priyanka is in particular very glamorous but I don't covet their wardrobes. Wheras I want to wear the clothes & looks on the blogger jules (on this thread), Zendaya, Kate Moss, Joan Smalls, Blake Lively if that makes sense. But difficult since I now have a post dc/lockdown belly I can't shift! 🤣

binkydinky · 19/08/2020 15:11

@MaybeDoctor that's true people do aspire to it. Ha, I live between the commons & the fashion is so uninspired!

onwheels · 19/08/2020 15:18

im am sorry i was racist. I am learning more.
with "tan or sun glow" i had intended to cover black, Asian (sunglow) and white people (tan).
with "smooth hair whether straight or curly" i had hoped to cover textured and white hair.

Sorry for the offence, i really am.

@GeorgianaD see post above

Anyway, after following this thread today I’ve given myself a manicure, dyed my eye brows and straightened my hair. I can’t say I look polished but a bit neater than I did earlier.

Rebelwithallthecause · 19/08/2020 17:18

The people who I see that are wealthy wear old Barbour wax jackets with chamaeux wellies. Never any denim but usually chino type trousers and a top with a collar.

It wouldn’t be a typical polished look but they always do look polished for some reason.

Rystall · 19/08/2020 17:29

I’ve always been interested in this and I think I’ve discovered their secret! It’s never, ever looking tired or worn out. I’m willing to bet those incredibly chic, put together people you see never have big dark circles under their eyes or look generally exhausted. Which is back to the ‘wealthy’ look - less stress, fewer menial jobs to do, ability to hire help etc

Methenyouplus4 · 19/08/2020 20:02

I always think Alyssa Beltempo (youtube) looks very chic (love her ethos too). I also think tonal dressing and tactile fabrics (cashmere, silk, leather, linen) look 'expensive' , as long as not super clingy/ revealing. I often think tonal dressing tends to make a look expensive.

Agree that where I live wealth normally equals wellies/outdoor wear etc. Some of the people I know who have significant £££ would look quite 'rough' if plonked in a different postcode (scraped back hair, no make up, leggings etc). Not meaning to sound snobby as I am not one of those! None of them seem to follow high fashion.

Looking and sounding well educated help.

It's so hard to define. DD is one of 12 from her school at Cambridge. (Yes it was an expensive school). Every one of them is different: white, brown, black, straight, curly (gay), thin, well covered, cool, traditional, frumpy. They all have a certain cut of the gib that says "I own me", good posture and bright eyes. --and all are frighteningly clever. I think it endures.

Funnily enough DH and I had breakfast at a naice hotel in Cornwall this morning. There were one or two women who wore cropped trousers, super shoes, etc., and yet there was something indefinable that said they weren't the real deal. Compare to the couple next to us. Mid 60s, sensible sandals, nothing awfully smart but just in their bearing they had style and when we went to the car park he had donned his jaunty hat.

The blonde thing is utter bollocks Georgiana.

I don't think it's hard to define, they are privileged & not short of a few bob ( or their families aren't). I think it's not hard to look wealthy if you are wealthy.

OhTheRoses · 19/08/2020 21:17

Well absolutely binkydinky. It can't be contrived.

You.l can’t argue with that 🤣
Sallygoround631 · 19/08/2020 22:03

agree about the casual racism, and these threads on the whole always go the same way.
It smacks of a desperation to appear to be 'perceived' to have status and wealth.
And I wonder why?
A general dissatisfaction with oneself, ones life, etc. It's often devoid of creativity, spirit, self-awareness and self esteem.
Similar to the endless threads asking people to compare salary, genius offspring and class.

The 'wealthy' look in MN terms always seems a bit off. It is rather prescriptive, predictable, and reeks of grown women trying to create a new identity (ego related) that suggests wealth and status rather than actually having it.
When life is devoid of substance, appearance is everything.

Sallygoround631 · 19/08/2020 22:12

and fucking cashmere is no good for fell walking, horse riding, yoga or boating.

Imagine what ignites passion in you, whether it is art, travelling, music, meditation, etc. Dress for that, and for what feels appropriate and good.

It is only my own opinion (of course) but the 'groomed, wealthy' threads always repeat the same humdrum desperate chorus, every damn time. I'd honestly say at this point that trying to emulate this 'monied parts of London' look has fuck all substance and not much of a decent aesthetic either.

If you do manage to pull off a certain look of wealth and grooming, would you say you'd be happier, better looking, satisfied?

Ive noticed blogger after blogger gagging for this over the past 15 years and most of them remind me of hollowed out shells. It's like they're dead behind the eyes or something.

OhTheRoses · 19/08/2020 22:21

All of my clothing is nondescript, I am middle aged and overweight but have a very good hairdresser. But I have some very nice diamonds and a DH who wears lace up brogues. We both speak quietly in public. Stripped to my rings and watch - you could still make an assumption.

Sallygoround631 · 19/08/2020 22:21

I guess what you need to ask yourself is : why the fuck do I want to look rich and what is so special about rich folk anyway? What the hell do they inspire in me and why do I wish I was one of them? Are they better than me? What do they contribute, and why do I want to emulate that?

Why do I salivate over them and their long legs and swishy hair?
If I mention expensive schools and six figure salaries enough will I achieve nirvana?

OhTheRoses · 19/08/2020 22:25

@sallygoround631. Nah, no one gives an SH1T but whether a person holds their knife and fork properly will be noted regardless of what they wear. It's the things that can't be unlearnt rather than the things that can be learnt.

MaybeDoctor · 19/08/2020 22:27

Yes, I think it’s a bit daft to try to create a ‘wealthy’ look if you aren’t wealthy. That’s going to be hard to keep up.

But these women do exist - they have the money and they dress a certain way. It’s a fairly homogeneous look.

Too true Grin

Lest we forget.

Angrymum22 · 19/08/2020 22:44

Cashmere is great for watching your DS play rugby during the winter. You don’t need one of those god-aweful puffer jackets. Just a thin layer of cashmere under a neat fitting 30 yr old Barbour looks the business.
Anyone can look the part but the thing that sets people apart are manners.

binkydinky · 19/08/2020 23:19

@justanotherneighinparadise 👍🏼
