What is it that makes someone look wealthy / polished?

Piggy backing onto the thread a few weeks ago about what looks 'common / tacky'.

It's a mystery to me - for instance I know someone who just looks so elegant and wealthy and it's effortless and interestingly carries a logo'd Louis Vuitton bag which was unanimously voted as tacky on here. But on her, it looks great and chic.

Do you know the vibe I mean, an inner confidence / calmness paired innate style!

On paper I could and should be polished but frankly I look disheveled (at best).

Time. They have the time for it. Waking up and spending time on their make up. Going to a salon for a blow dry/nails/brows/facials. Expensive clothes.

Popjam · 19/08/2020 23:48

Look wealthy or look polished? They are not necessarily the same.

I don't agree with the tanned, blond thing...off the top of my head, some of the people I would consider stylish are:

Nicole Kidman - blonde but never tanned
Michelle Obama
I had some spanish au pairs who were just effortlessly stylish. Accessories and posture helped.

People I know who are polished:
Confident in what they are wearing, able to walk in their shoes etc.
Groomed - eyebrows, make up etc
Nothing worn or shabby
Know their own style and what suits them, adapt fashion items to suit them
Good jewellery

Well let's face it, if you're wealthy you're likely to be tall and good looking, which is a help.

What?

Or rather old, white & male!

Packingsoapandwater · 20/08/2020 09:34

There is a certain "look" but not all wealthy people have it.

I've wondered about it for years, and come to the conclusion that it is diet, exercise and sleep/relaxation. It's very easy to look groomed when you need minimal makeup because your skin is so good.

queenofarles · 20/08/2020 09:38

I honestly think it’s more to do with grooming and being thin than clothes.

I finally got the chance to cut my hair/colour , do my brows, face treatment, things I didn’t do since Feb! My hair looked awful and my eyebrows had absolutely no shape. No matter how expensive my clothes were , they didn’t make me feel good.
But now I feel and look a million times better.

Being toned is a big plus too, everything looks better when you are on the slim side.

Then comes clothes, it’s difficult to find well made clothes on the High street but I find places like Massimo Dutti excellent for things like cotton shirts and knitwear, Their coats and trenches are really good too.

Can someone link the original thread about looking common? I can't find it!

Clean and polished car inside and out

I cannot stress enough how little the upper classes care about polished cars. This is a complete working and lower middle class obsession.

YogiMatte · 21/08/2020 11:15

DH must be v upper class

I am super upper class then :D
slipperyeel · 21/08/2020 12:07

@managedmis isn’t wrong, if you come from centuries of aristocratic stock you are very likely to be taller since your ancestors ate a significantly better diet than the poor.

I’m 5ft2 and suspect all my ancestors were peasants!

holatous · 21/08/2020 12:24

@GeorgianaD

MaybeDoctor it helps to be blonde? Really? As a black woman, I find that extremely offensive. Sadly, it’s an attitude I see all too often on Mumsnet. It makes me furious.
agree with you!

I actually think brunette women tend to be the wealthier ones I witness. But there are many black women who look effortlessly chic out there.

holatous · 21/08/2020 12:32

A lot more incest in the aristocracy, you can see the effects of that down bloodlines. Of course, only cousins.

vixxo · 21/08/2020 14:24

Being blonde helps? Are you serious or do you need to get out more?

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/08/2020 14:30

Actually I think that’s correct. Well maintained blonde with no roots looks expensive.

I’ve been blonde and you always get a second look because your so visible.

OhTheRoses · 21/08/2020 19:41

Grin I have got blonder as I have aged. Natural dark rodent. Highlighted at 16 to cover mouse. Much paler now I'm 60 because it blends better with the skin tone. DD is dark blonde but highlighted because it looks better and has awesome hair.

FWIW both DC have DH's fairness. DH was/is working class. Very blonde, blue eyed, freckley. My side is principally from Continental Europe and we are olive skinned and brown eyed.

Lydia777 · 21/08/2020 21:08

I think the aspiration should be to look elegant as opposed to 'wealthy.' Some people can carry that off regardless although I do agree that money helps. The two things that I think are essential are good posture and being well spoken-if you have those and are wearing Primark clothes, you still come across very well. I know people who dress well and look fabulous but when they speak, it takes away from the elegant vibe.

goingtothe · 21/08/2020 21:14

@Lydia777 I think elegant is a much better word to use - describes what I mean exactly!

Wealthy - a serene, rested face and most importantly, excellent deportment. Anyone can strive to be stylish/polished on any budget, but you will never appear wealthy or well bred without those.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 24/08/2020 15:41

I'm currently sat on a bench in a packed playground while my son plays. Most women here are dressed quite well to be honest. I've come in a long flowy dress, as have many others. There is a woman who looks lovely in a very tight dress just above the knee (she's tall and slim and pretty - very dark hair - not blonde!), paired with a pair of. I've leather loafers and a Gucci handbag. From initial glance she looks very polished and put together. But then she turned around and had a massive tattoo on her shin. I could see another peeking out from under her sleeve. That was a deal breaker for me. Instantly went from looking polished and glam to a bit try hard and chavvy 🤷🏼‍♀️

slipperyeel · 24/08/2020 21:19

Gucci loafers in a playground sounds a bit OTT!

pigcon1 · 24/08/2020 21:23

If you have cash to spend on yourself, give yourself time to exercise, and have help to run your life smoothly it is far easier to present a calm and unfrazzled demeanour.

Not about stuff, about cash and freed up time...
