What are your autumn essentials?

I want to start reinvigorating my wardrobe after years of wearing very old clothes or hand me downs from my mum. I realise I'm too late to bother with summer and I want to lose a couple more pounds first anyway.
Had a big clear out of all the clothes that are too big, too tatty or outdated. Now it's time to start from scratch.
Wondering what items are must haves for autumn. And what have you seen you are thinking of buying.

I love wearing dark (but not black) coloured dresses, with thick black tights and heeled boots.

A nice knitted jumper- the style depends on personal preference and body shape

A nice autumn coat- I prefer the trench style but other people prefer the shorter barbour style coat. Go into a shop that sells a bit of everything and (covid depending) try on different styles of outfits to find out what you prefer!

mamapants · 16/08/2020 18:35

I went to have a look at my coats after seeing your post and think I might have a bit of a problem Blush
I actually have 11 coats and 4 sport jackets.
I think they all still work even though some of them are old, maybe I'm wrong though.
One doesn't fit so if it still doesn't fit when I've lost the last of my lockdown weight gain I will ebay it.

I also don't have many shops locally so fairly limited in that regard. Was thinking of buying online although always struggle with what size to order. And I'm only 5'2 so really prefer trying things on.

Some face masks in purples and reds 😷 to match my clothes

HundredMilesAnHour · 16/08/2020 19:01

A vegan leather trench coat from Nanushka that I picked up in their outlet sale earlier this year. I can't wait to finally wear it.

Vogue is predicting vegan leather will still be big this afternoon. Good!!! I'm wearing it regardless.

kitschplease · 16/08/2020 19:06

ankle boots, big scarf, fleece lined tights, heatgen vests.

I'm looking for 3 plain jumpers that go with everything (pleather skirt, pleather trousers, jeans, jersey skirt), but struggle with this every year!

HundredMilesAnHour · 16/08/2020 19:41

I meant autumn, not afternoon. Vogue predicting what will be big this afternoon brings a whole new meaning to fast fashion. Grin

Sasuma · 16/08/2020 19:59

For autumn my basics are:

Good pair of boots, slight heel but comfortable for all day (mine are Bhava, light creamy brown)
Well fitted jeans (mine are crop flares from Citizens of Humanity)
Several nice jumpers - I have a mix of some oversized and some fitted that I wear tucked/half tucked into jeans
One nice medium weight coat - mine is a second hand max mara wrap coat

I also have:
Vegan leather jacket for warmer days instead of a coat - mostly wear this with black jeans and a printed blouse tucked into jeans
Vegan leather trousers to wear with oversized jumpers
Pumps for when it’s not rainy - mine are vegan pointed toe low courts from Wills

A couple of nice bags and scarfs.

I love autumn, and burnt oranges etc really suit me so like all the autumn colours that come out.

@HundredMilesAnHour I love Nanushka! I’m after one of their vegan puffer jackets - where did you get yours - was it direct from Nanushka is was it from a sale site?

HundredMilesAnHour · 16/08/2020 20:52

@Sasuma I got my trench coat direct from Nanushka's outlet site - they only had it open for a month or so. I have a couple of their vegan puffers - 1 I got direct from Nanushka and 1 from Net-a-Porter. I have TONS of Nanushka vegan leather clothes (and shoes) as I think the quality is amazing! Love their dresses especially!

mamapants · 16/08/2020 20:57

Wow just googled Nanushka and their jackets are stunning.
Out of my price range though.
I think I definitely need more modern smart trousers. Would the paper bag trousers work in autumn or are they more summer? And if so do they work on shorties? And what shoes for colder weather?
I also was thinking some long sleeve bodysuits could be useful?

Thank you @HundredMilesAnHour! I’ll keep an eye out for their outlet site, really want to get one of those puffers!

Good thermal long sleeve tops
Knitted hat and scarf
Leather gloves
Lightweight, ideally cotton, scarf
Magic gloves
Thick chunky socks
Wellies
Ankle boots- various for walking, town, work
Waterproof coats with hood
Mini Vaseline tub or Neutrogena Norwegian formula lip balm stick
Clear mascara
Lots of cardigans and jumpers- chunky, mid weight
Coloured/ patterned tights
Thick wooly or cotton tights
Stylish backpack
Handbag
Velvet bag and accessories
Long sleeve button up shirts
Dangly earrings (in the shape of a leaf or beaded)
Bright lipstick
Body suits (high neck/ turtle neck, always ribbed, long sleeved), layered with thermals underneath as needed
A line skirts in corduroy, velvet or other thicker fabric
Primark lined leggings- think they're called velvet lined but basically really fluffy inside and look like normal leggings on the outside

MulberryPeony · 17/08/2020 07:33

I bought two body suits off eBay (Primark a d New Look) but had to pass them on to my much thinner teen. The leg holes were cut too high for me. Interested to find out if there any better fitting ones out there.

I’m after some fairly high on the ankle chunky soles boots to wear with wide leg trousers and jeans. Some Sezane style knitwear at a lower price and a big cosy black or navy cardigan to wrap up in. Also fluffy socks Grin

mamapants · 18/08/2020 09:31

Managed to have a little look in TKMaxx yesterday but I was with my son so couldn't have a proper look. There was some lovely knitwear.
I've been looking at boots.
I haven't braved the shorter trousers with boots look as am scared of getting it wrong. I'm also never sure if these things work on short people.
Also looking at faux leather leggings.

Ankle boots
Tweed Jacket
Thin turtle neck jumpers (as a bottom layer)
Smart waterproof coat
Jersey shirts
Straight Cord/ Velvet trousers (or jeans I guess, but v tempted to get some velvet ones this year)
Lots of scarves

curlytops21 · 18/08/2020 18:30

@kitschplease

ankle boots, big scarf, fleece lined tights, heatgen vests.

Kitchplease, i have the answer to your jumper problem. Uniqlo extra fine merino wool crew neck jumpers. £24.90. They are fabulous. Fine knit and lovely for layering. The new season colours have not long been released so get in quickly as neutral favourites like black, navy, grey etc will sell out quickly.

I wear them with jeans mostly but in winter i do also wear with skirts (including short Aline pleather style) and ankle bootsa and they look great.

LesLavandes · 18/08/2020 19:07

I like a casual smart look and my wardrobe staples are

Nice indigo jeans or navy stretch trousers
Nice t shirts of short sleeve blouses and cashmere or merino cardigans in various colours

A few dresses for nice occasions.
A puffer jacket with hood and a smarter jacket also with hood as I live on the coast.

For shoes, I have nice navy and grey trainers (non exercise), a pair of long black boots,a smart pair of patented slip on shoes.

Lots of socks and cosy pjs.

foxtiger · 21/08/2020 19:16

It sounds as if some of you are expecting much colder autumns than others. I live in one of the warmest parts of the UK and I'm unlikely to be able to wear any sort of coat before half-term, although I might wear boots when I don't really need to, just because I like them.

Autumn essentials for me are:

Black jeans (not so much blue jeans as they don't really go with most of the colours I wear)

Sometimes burgundy or brown jeans

Black work trousers

Shorter skirts and dresses than I'd wear in summer, with semi-opaques and ankle boots

Short fitted cardigans (I have some cashmere ones that were an amazing charity shop bargain)

Batwing sleeve jumpers

3/4 length sleeve outer layers that can be layered over plain or stripy long-sleeved t-shirts

Lightweight scarves (as accessories, not thick ones for warmth)

Chunky necklaces

Colourful or textured tights
