Let's talk crystal nail files!

I get the 99p crystal nail files from Savers. Cheap and cheerful, they work well. But they go smooth fairly quickly and stop being effective.

Can anyone suggest a file that keeps its roughness? I shudder at paying out but I think it will be more economical in the long run.

Many thanks

I have a nice Leighton Denny one that's lasting really well. I had an almost identical one that was Ruby and Millie that never went blunt, was gutted when I snapped it and found out they'd disappeared!

GoshHashana · 12/08/2020 21:52

My Leighton Denny one is immortal! I also have one from H&M that's still going strong after about 4 years of use.

StCharlotte · 12/08/2020 22:21

I paid £10 for one a decade ago and it's still fine. Sadly no idea what brand. Maybe you get what you pay for?

Don't they say to wet them to get them "working" again?

I’ve had my Leighton Denny ones for about 15 years and they’re as good as new. Cost about £20 for a set of two different sizes and I wash them under water between uses. Absolutely incredible, love them to bits. I’ll never use an emery board again, these turn your nails into dust, gentle but so effective.

I want to get my hands on a Nail Career Education file set ❤

Love Suzie and her videos 🤩

Though I've just realised that you were looking for Crystal nail file recommendations so that wasn't helpful 😂

Bamboobo · 12/08/2020 22:34

Always worth having a look in tk Maxx, the £3 one I got there is just as good as the Leighton Denny ones!

BeBraveAndBeKind · 12/08/2020 22:35

Another vote for Lenny Deighton here. It's turned my nails from weak, flaking horrors into something pretty decent.

Binglebong · 12/08/2020 23:58

Uou are all marvelous! Many thanks, I shall see if my local boots actually has any in. Thank you!

I just bought some Mont bleu ones from Amazon. Lifetime gaurantee and I'm well chuffed with them.

SapphireSeptember · 13/08/2020 22:02

I've got a Leighton Denny one, bought it in 2012 and it's still going strong (although the case is a bit battered now.) Grin
The trouble with cheap glass nail files is they're covered in the same stuff as emery boards, so they'll wear down in the same way. The 'proper' ones are either glass or crystal that have been dipped in acid, so they should never wear down.

Lndnmummy · 14/08/2020 09:41

I bought one from Amazon last year for £6. It’s still
going strong.

Binglebong · 14/08/2020 15:25

Well I hot the last LD in the store yesterday so I'm set for 25 years. Grin Going to keep cheap ones for my bag where they're at risk of being g broken.

Thank you all for your help.

I wish I could get on with them. FOr me it is like nails on a blackboard. Old skool emory boards or files with the foam stuff in the middle are the only ones I can use

angelfacecuti75 · 14/08/2020 20:22

Me too for the Leighton Denny glass nail file. Think mine was about 11 quid, try ebay or Amazon. Will last you years x

FreekStar · 14/08/2020 20:25

I have a chapmneys one which I must have had 10 years now- I had a boots one before that that dd broke, and never realised it was even possible for the surface to wear off until I bought dd an M&S one for Christmas which she wore out in about 3 months. I've just replaced it for her with a leighton Denny one which has a 25 year gaurantee- so have high hopes for it!

goose1964 · 14/08/2020 20:25

I had a mid price one for about 10 years, still work in until DH had a hissy fit and threw my handbag up the stairs. It fell out and I tried on it, luckily it was still in its case so I didn't hurt myself. I'll need to replace it soon so this is a really useful thread.

goose1964 · 14/08/2020 20:26

Trod on it , God I hate Kindle spell check, it corrects correct words.

Me too! The glass ones really put my teeth on edge. I bought one a few years ago, used it on one nail then just couldn't go on. Even thinking about it now is making me shudder. I get best results from emery boards, and they have the advantage of coming in different sizes and different grades of raspiness. So you can do a better job. And they are cheap.

Binglebong · 16/08/2020 19:23

Well it seems to work very well. I would prefer something thinner for getting under the nail but this will help massively. Many thanks for your help and I'll let you know how it's doing in 25 years.Grin

I LOVE my Ruby and Millie one (I met R&M once, years ago). I'm on my second as the first one got broken when it was left on the sofa. This one has survived many years and not even slightly smooth - I am incredibly protective of it!

I bought the LD one when I was away for a few weeks and forgot to take a file and have been really disappointed in how smooth it is, it's almost useless. Considering it was £15 it's very annoying.
