Highlights or tint to cover greys? What do you do?

I’ve always had highlights which have been ok at disguising my greys as they have kind of blended in.
Over lockdown they grey has increased and in the absence of getting to a hairdresser I’ve used loreal root spray to cover them.

I’ve got an appointment for half head highlights in 3 weeks but I’m now wondering if I should get an all over tint. My sister now does this (no.8 tint) & t section highlights on top and hers looks lovely (Golden blonde colour) and covers her grey.

I’m confused as to what to do but seeing as the highlights cost me a small fortune I don’t want to have them only to feel I can still see a lot of grey.

My natural colour is brown with increasing grey on the top. The ends are quite blonde where the sun has lightened the highlights.

Please can anyone advise or tell me what you do?
I’ve considered using a box dye but am worried about it going orange!

I’m currently having highlights for that exact reason. Be interested to hear other responses though ...

@toobusytothink to cover increasing greys? Are you going for half a head?

I was just scrolling active thinking about starting a thread asking the same thing when I saw this! So following for responses Blush

I have black hair so don't know the best way to hide them I'm not even 30 and have loads of white hairs all over.

Well mine has been highlighted for as long as I can remember so no idea what my actual hair colour is... but from what I can see if the roots it would be dark with grey running through it 🤷‍♀️. Full head of highlights being done. Seems to work. Actually takes better on my “more grey” front bit. And like how the grey runs into the highlights. Can’t really tell what’s highlighted and what’s grey ...

@toobusytothink oh I see. So I guess after having them for a long time the overall look will be blonder more like the look of a tint. Do you have a full head every time? Maybe I need to ask for a full head instead of half this time? And then just keep it topped up with a t-section?

I do think the roots Regrowth are less obvious with highlights rather than all over colour.

I alternate a full head with t bar highlights. I will be getting my full head highlights done on Thursday after months without. I wear my hair up for exercising so I get a full head as a half head misses out the underneath section at the back

I also get some lowlights along with my highlights so it breaks up the blonde a bit more. My natural colour is mid brown with grey at the parting

Littlemiss74 · 28/07/2020 17:48

@dementedpixie thanks thats helpful, my natural colour sounds the same as yours. Can I ask how many different colours you have put in then? I don’t know what shades of blonde to ask for? I like the idea of having lowlights aswell too break it up a bit.

I just get the blonde highlights and then slightly darker lowlights so the hairdresser works from 2 bowls

I find if I go for a lightish box colour (in the 500's) the colour picks up differently on the grey and looks like highlights anyway. Choosing a colour similar to my natural colour means regrowth isnt too bad, and since Im doing it at home I can do every few weeks easily anyway, only takes about 30mins. Im quite enjoying not going to the hairdresser and saving the time and money tbh. Although I will need a cut soon.

Sorry 600s not 500s
