I know this isn’t AIBU but I really enjoy a scroll through insta with my morning coffee.

This morning it’s full of black and white selfies of women simpering at the camera, with the hashtag “women supporting women”. What’s so supportive about this, please? It has quite put me off my breakfast Grin. I normally unfollow selfie posers but this is literally two thirds of the accounts on my feed.

lol, just had a look. How is posting a selfie "supporting women"!?

confused. Just another excuse for some mindless narcissism disguised as altruism.

pleasenonotagain · 28/07/2020 10:34

Just another excuse for some mindless narcissism disguised as altruism.

Pmsl! So true!

WowStarsWow · 28/07/2020 10:38

"Challenge accepted" hahaha Hmm

JaneJeffer · 28/07/2020 11:10

Thanks for not nominating me.

Fanthorpe · 28/07/2020 11:13

I didn’t understand it for a bit, weird. Like that beach legs thing a few years ago.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 28/07/2020 11:33

Yes I was trying to work out what the challenge was. It's something like post a black and white photo and the tag some women you admire or something, so I guess that's where the supporting bit comes in, but obviously it can only be other women who are on insta, not Margaret who runs the local meals on wheels. Just lots of bloggers/minor celebs tagging their mates.

Fanthorpe · 28/07/2020 11:50

I’m fascinated by their choices though,

Lottapianos · 28/07/2020 11:53

Saw this yesterday and was wondering what the hell it was all about. Seems very cheesy, glib and thoughtless to me

waterjungle · 28/07/2020 12:10

I don't understand these things at all, I must be showing my age as they just irritate me!

Where is the challenge?
What is challenging about it?!

How are you doing anything that is in the least bit challenging by posting a photo of yourself?!!

fizzpopbang123 · 28/07/2020 12:29

I don't understand what's so challenging about posting a photo on Instagram. For the women posting, it is LITERALLY their job.

JaneJeffer · 28/07/2020 12:35

It's challenging because they need to find the time between accepting deliveries of freebies to take 100 selfies so they can post the perfect one.

MellowBird85 · 28/07/2020 12:38

This is why I refuse to join Instasham 😑

AnaViaSalamanca · 28/07/2020 15:23

@JaneJeffer true true, plus filter the hell out of them

fizzpopbang123 · 28/07/2020 18:29

Ok, so apparently this started in Turkey to highlight violence and murder against women, the b&w photos to honour the victims whose b&w photos appear in newspapers every day. Won't claim to know any more than that as I just read quick highlight on someones feed.

This is obviously truly shocking and a valid reason to use social media to spread a message - so why is there no hashtag or explanatory text in the posts? If I hadn't paused on someones story I wouldn't have known, out of all the hundreds of posts today, one temporary story on one persons feed?

Fanthorpe · 28/07/2020 20:10

Thank you fizzpop that puts a very different aspect in it.

TheSpottedZebra · 28/07/2020 20:19

I think only Florence Pugh (of all slebs I've seen who have posted this) has referenced Turkey or the Istanbul Convention - everyone else has posted shite about Queens and kindness and strong.

fizzpopbang123 · 29/07/2020 08:29

Ha! It would appear most of them didn't have a clue as to the original intent, lots of apologies and stories linking to the real campaign this morning. Which makes you wonder whether they really did just see an opportunity to post a self promoting picture of themselves after all....

Limpshade · 29/07/2020 08:32

Almost as bad as that time people were taking make-up free selfies to "honour" cancer sufferers. As if not wearing make-up could be equated to cancer Confused

I was tagged in this (I am NOT an influencer) and had to dig around to find what it was really actually about. I didn’t post a photo.

My neighbour posted a selfie saying she hadn’t been tagged, but thought it was too important not to take part, with a load of waffle about female friendship.

breadcakebiscuits · 30/07/2020 12:27

@Judystilldreamsofhorses you totally influenced me as I have started wearing red lipstick because of you.

I can see so many Insta women back-tracking on their bullshit this morning by posting up (split second panels) on their Stories about the Turkish femicide campaign.

Bit late now.

So many women will never lose any opportunity to big up themselves in their tiny worlds rather than actually engage their brain. I actually feel sad for them - to be this desperate for external validation from strangers that you’ll jump on a bandwagon you haven’t even pretended to inform yourself about.

OTOH Pinterest has been ruined by Chinese scam ads so I’ll continue to take refuge on Insta.
